THE QUEEN’S MEDICAL CENTER HONORS
OUTSTANDING PHYSICIANS OF 2015:
ERLAINE BELLO, M.D. AND KUO-CHIANG LIAN, M.D.
HONOLULU – The Queen‟s Medical Center (Queen‟s) has honored Erlaine Bello, M.D.
and Kuo-Chiang Lian, M.D. as the 2015 Ke Kauka Po„okela Outstanding Physicians of
the Year.
This annual award recognizes physicians of Queen‟s medical staff who exemplify highquality care, professional conduct, outstanding contributions to the medical field, and a
spirit of aloha.
“Dr. Bello and Dr. Lian have provided an exceptional level of care and service to our
patients and the community,” said Art Ushijima, President of The Queen‟s Medical
Center. “We recognize them for their distinguished contributions and for demonstrating
Queen‟s values of C.A.R.E. – Compassion, Aloha, Respect and Excellence.”
Dr. Bello, who received the award for Outstanding Community-Based Physician, serves
as Queen‟s Hospital Epidemiologist and Medical Director of Infection Prevention and
Control. She has contributed much of her time and knowledge to help train, educate and
update Queen‟s employees on the Ebola Virus Disease.
The Radford High graduate earned a B.A. in Biochemistry and Religious Studies from
Occidental College and earned her Doctor of Medicine and Master‟s in Clinical Research
from the University of Hawaii‟s John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). She
completed a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. She is a
private practice Internist and Infectious Diseases Specialist. She is also the Associate
Program Director for the University of Hawaii Internal Medicine Residency Program and
an Associate Professor of Medicine at JABSOM. Once a week, she works at the Queen
Emma Clinics‟ Infectious Diseases clinic.
Dr. Bello enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, and dog Lui, and
scrapbooking. She helps coach the Disease Detectives event for ‟Iolani School‟s Science
Olympiad team that will be representing Hawaii at Nationals next month.
Dr. Lian, who received the award for Outstanding Hospital-Based Physician, is the
Medical Director of Queen‟s Hospitalist Program and the Queen‟s Medical Group, a
group for employed physicians that sets quality standards, establishes a culture, and takes
care of employment issues.
Born in Lubbock, Texas, Dr. Lian grew up in Illinois. His passion for teaching was
inspired by his father, a professor in Special Education at Illinois State University, and
his mother, an early-education teacher for hearing-impaired children.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. He attended medical school at the University of California, San
Francisco and completed his post graduate education and residency in Internal Medicine
at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he served as Chief Resident.
Dr. Lian was Medical Director of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Discharge
Lounge and served as Outside Hospital Transfers Czar at the David Geffen School of
Medicine, Department of Medicine.
Dr. Lian moved to Hawaii in 2011, and enjoys outdoor activities, music, and spending
time with his family.
The Queen‟s Medical Center has more than 1,200 physicians serving the community.
