The Matsiko World Orphan Choir
performed at St. Elizabeth Seton on
March 30th. The choir is part of the
International Children's Network. Their
mission is to provide as many of the
world's 600 million orphaned and at-risk
children sponsorship for a complete
education through their nation's highest
university or vocational levels. By
doing so every child will be on equal
footing with their nation's most privileged children and they will return to
their villages to help other children
who are in the same condition they
once were in order to break the cycle of
utter dependency and despair and replace it with empowerment and hope!
Congratulations to Luther Morrison for
qualifying for the State AAU Wrestling
Tournament held in Brookings on March
27-29. Luther’s Coach stopped by to wish
him luck at the tournament.

Principal’s Corner
Dear Parents,
As spring greets us with budding flowers and renewed spirits, we are reminded
that our children are growing and blooming through our guidance and through
their own experiences. One of the most important aspects of childhood is experiencing life and growth through imagination and inspiration. Having a positive
outlook and seeing and celebrating the intriguing differences in each and every
one of us is so important to development and growth, especially in childhood.
Having an active imagination wakes up your brain to new possibilities and
ideas. Imagining new possibilities can inspire you to be more innovative when
approaching challenging problems. This can lead you to discovering creative solutions that you may not have thought of using standard approaches. Seeking inspiration involves having an open mind to new ideas and appreciating small things
which you may not otherwise have noticed. How can you help your child develop
and use imagination to seek out inspiration?
 Encourage and celebrate your child’s uniqueness. This helps children grow
to feel comfortable with themselves and helps them have confidence in
their thoughts, ideas, and different ways of thinking.
 Have your child do a doodle drawing. Close your eyes and draw two or
three simple lines (curvy, straight, diagonal) on a blank page. Then open
your eyes and figure out what you can turn those lines into. Will it create a
landscape? A spaceship? An animal? It’s all up to your imagination!
 Ask questions, in the car, at the store, or at the dinner table. Ask your
child questions to spark imagination and creativity, “What do you think
birds sing about?” “What would it feel like to walk on the moon?” “How
do you think cars work?”
Encouraging imagination, uniqueness, and inspiration in your children will help
them be innovative thinkers and curious individuals.

Packing Hope 2014-2015
The 2014-2015 Packing Hope Campaign is underway! Over the past five years,
we have purchased nearly $90,230 worth of food and packed close to 890,400
meals. Our goal this year is to raise $6,520 and pack meals on April 22nd. Each
classroom at Seton has a goal amount based on $20 per student. Please ask
your child/children about this cause, and please consider giving generously.
Packing Hope is a non-profit organization that, with the help of people like you,
distributes packages of healthy food to starving children all over the world.

CATHOLIC UNITED
FINANCIAL
CAR RAFFLE!
For the past 5 years, the Rapid City Catholic School
System has been invited to participate in the Catholic
United Financial Raffle. Catholic United Financial
oversees this tremendous fundraiser, providing all of
the materials and raffle prizes, while the participating
schools receive 100% of the proceeds! Through the
hard work of our students and parents, our school
system raised $29,838 which will go towards new
technology for all three schools. We would like to
thank the families, teachers and staff for all of their
efforts in making the raffle such a success this year.
Of the 52 total prizes, two of the winning tickets were
sold by our students. Congratulations to Josh Houk
and Jim Klinefelter who won a $150 Amazon gift card
and a $100 Visa gift card respectively.
Thank you so much for supporting the
Rapid City Catholic School System!
Congratulations to the following

Library Notes
Summer is right around the corner!
Does your student have a good
book to read on those warm
summer evenings?
***
The St. Elizabeth Seton Library
will be having a Scholastic Book
Fair the week of April
13th. Shopping begins on
Monday, April 13th and will end
on Friday, April 17th.
***
The book fair will bring a wonderful
selection of fun, engaging, and affordable
books kids want to read. We believe
that giving kids access to good books
and the opportunity to choose books
will motivate them to read more. And
like most acquired skills, the more kids
practice reading, the better they’ll get!
We look forward to having you
participate in our Fair, and remember,
all purchases benefit our school.
If you have any questions, please contact
our Library Director, Jenelle Kirchoff at

Destination Imagination
Congratulations to all three Destination Imagination
teams! After months of preparing for their challenges the
DI teams all earned a First Place award at Regionals’ held
at the Douglas School System. They qualified for the
State Tournament in Huron to present their challenge
solutions to a team of appraisers in hopes of making it to
the global competition in Tennessee. The DI teams are

Trapped.
Why I use Scrip:
“I go to Sam’s Club once a week and
get gift cards to pay for my purchase. I
use the self checkout line and am in and
out quickly, saving time & money.” Andy & Liz, parents to a 3rd grader.
“I reload money on my Safeway gift cards by logging into my Scrip
account on www.shopwithscrip.com. I know the money will be there
when I do my grocery shopping and I saved on my son’s tuition.” Shannon, parent to 2nd grader.

Love and Logic
Using a Soft Voice
When your kids act up, does your voice get louder or quieter? When I'm having a
good day - and I'm practicing what I preach - my voice gets softer. From years of observing successful parents and educators, I learned the value of leaning close to a child's
ear and whispering a question:
 Are you going to settle down, or do you need to spend some time in your
room?
 Can you use a quiet voice in here or would it be best for you eat outside
so you can yell?
 Do you think you can play with that nicely, instead of hitting your brother
with it?
Dr. Charles Fey
There's true power in the quiet voice! In my CD, Oh Great! What Do I Do Now?, I
teach the importance of making discipline look easy, even when our kids are taking
limit-testing to the limit. When we can handle things with a whisper, our kids begin to
reason, "Wow! If Mom handled me that easily, what else does she have up her sleeve?"
While there are times when it's appropriate to raise our voices a bit, doing it too often trains our children to respond only when we're flexing our vocal cords. I don't know
about you, but this wears me out! I think I'd rather whisper and then prove to my kids
that I'll follow up with actions rather than words. I heard this example from a Love and
Logic dad:
Last week I whispered to my four-year-old, "You may keep the toys you pick up."
That afternoon, I picked up the ones he left out, put them in the attic, and kept my mouth
shut. Yesterday, I whispered the same thing, and he yelled, "No! I'll pick them up!" And
he did!
Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a
benefit, forward it to a friend.

Packing Hope is a food packing project that St. Elizabeth

through sacrifice, raise the money to pay for the food supplies for the packing day, and the cost of shipping the food.
The packing date this year is set for April 22, 2015.
