THE STAUNTON-AUGUSTA-WAYNESBORO MSA (METROPOLITAN
STATISTICAL AREA) is centrally located in the scenic
Shenandoah Valley of west-central Virginia. The StauntonAugusta-Waynesboro MSA covers 1,002 square miles of land
and is home to over 120,000 people. Staunton, founded in
1747, is the County seat. The City of Staunton originated the
council-manager form of government in 1908. Waynesboro,
an important industrial center, was established in 1801.
Craigsville is the County’s only incorporated town.
The County, founded in 1738, is bounded on the west by the
lower elevations of the Allegheny Mountains and on the east
by the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The headwaters of
three major rivers, the James, Shenandoah and Potomac, are
located in the County. Interstates 81 and 64 intersect at the
eastern edge of the city limits of Staunton. The StauntonAugusta-Waynesboro MSA is approximately 85 miles north of
Roanoke, 100 miles west of Richmond, 150 miles southwest
of Washington, D.C., and 200 miles northwest of the Port of
Hampton Roads.
