MEETINGS 7:00 PM ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION 2810 BREMNER AVE (Use the Molly-B door) MEETINGS ARE THE THIRD MONDAY OF THE MONTH MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO ALL MEMBERS PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND PRESIDENT’S REPORT Doug Wood CONFERENCE THE 2015 Hello Fish and Game members, Just came back from the 2015 Alberta Fish and Game conference in Lethbridge. Harold Drok, Kevin Wingert and I were in attendance at all the functions. It was an eye opener. For instance; the incredible number of habitat and youth oriented projects that the 92 F&G clubs are involved in. Also the large number of folks in as representatives of their clubs. attendance There was a talk by the new Environmental minister who admitted he was not a hunter or fisher.[go figure]. He made the usual promises. The habitat biologists on elk populations and migrations and also gave talks a talk on grizzly bear biology. The provincial chairmen fishing etc all gave informational talks on of hunting, their chosen topics. Two government guys who apparently write the regulations sat thorough and listened to all our wildlife resolutions, if you recall they are the resolutions that "BE IT RESOLVED THAT". Most begin with were passed and the government guys regulations agreed with the majority. A list of these resolutions and the voting results is available on request. The provincial Fish and Game budget for 2015 is a whopping 1,386.500.00, with all of it earmarked for projects. If anyone wants to view the whole worthwhile topics, call me to borrow the 2015 manual. agenda and Thanks Con’t page 5 RED DEER FISH & GAME NEWSLETTER 1ST QUARTER 2015 RDFGA Page 1 RANGE SAFETY CLASSES 2014 Stephen Medicraft – Junior Shooters In 2014 there were 42 classes held to update our members to the improved and added safety features at the Outdoor Range. Over 350 members where students and received a key to the outdoor range. There were 14 volunteer instructors and we wish to THANK them for their time given to the club. Doug Brodie Wayne Brown Jan Harkema Heather Jannsen Harold McCannell Ray McKinnon Simon du Plooy Ken Brown David Golem Francis Hunt Barry Matthew Rob McCoy Steve Medicraft Tim Quesnel This years “RSO” Classes are well underway with some new members volunteering their time, although not listed here, I want to ALSO thank them, as they are what make this club work. Andrew Thacker didn't qualify for finals after finishing 14th in the qualifying relay. Belle Medicraft of Red Deer shooting Air Rifle qualified for finals and placed 6th overall. Belle and her partner Shaylene Lunam from Edmonton placed fifth in the Ladies Air Rifle team event. Red Deer has been chosen for the 2019 Canada Winter Games. However the committee from Red Deer did not chose to have Target Shooting as one of the sports. Please find attached to the newsletter our petition to have this decision revoked and have Target shooting entered back into the games. We ask you to help fill in these petition forms in large numbers so we may show the interest in this sport and the value it has in the Games. The Junior shooting program in Red Deer sent 3 athletes and 1 was chosen to be an alternate in 2015 out of a team of 8. It would be such a shame to have future Junior Shooters miss out on this opportunity in their home town. Additional classes will be added as needed, the next scheduled classes are March 7-10: AM, March 15-10AM, March 28-10AM, April 8 7PM. Due to limited space please phone Ken Brown 403-887-2726 OR “e’ mail [email protected] to save your place, classes take about an hour, depending on questions and discussion. JUNIOR SHOOTERS Stephen Medicraft The Red Deer Fish & Game Junior Shooters had a fabulous week in Prince George participating in the Canada Winter Games. The target shooting was an event that took place in the first week of this competition so our athletes were also able to take part in the Opening Ceremonies. Ashley Pikkert of Blackfalds (far right) partnered with Veronika Schulze of Calgary (far left) won Gold for Lades Pistol Team. Andrew Thacker of Lacombe (right centre) partnered with Peter Schulze of Calgary (left centre) won Gold for Men’s Pistol Team. In the individual qualifying relay Ashley Pikkert placed 2nd and placed 4th overall in finals. RED DEER FISH & GAME NEWSLETTER 1ST QUARTER 2015 Page 2 RED DEER FISH & GAME NEWSLETTER 1ST QUARTER 2015 Page 3 Here’s an update of last weekends competition that the Red Deer Fish & Game Junior Shooters attended. The competition was held in Calgary at the Calgary Rifle and Pistol Club and was attended by athletes representing four provinces. (BC, AB, SK & QC) This match was a cut-score match so it attracted some of our National team members as well. The relays were held Friday evening and Saturday all day with the Finals on Sunday. The following are the results of our Juniors: Air Pistol Ashley Pikkert Raelynne Pikkert Jacob Pikkert Harris Medicraft Andrew Thacker Gold Int Junior Ladies Gold Junior Ladies Silver Sub Junior Mens Silver Int Junior Mens Bronze Int Juinor Mens Air Rifle Belle Medicraft Tyler Ross Daniel Thacker Sunday morning I was at the indoor range where two people were handling their pistols and behaving so badly they were asked to leave. I have no intention of spoiling anyone's fun or putting my nose into anyone else's business but when your actions or behavior is going to affect mine or someone else's well being or life, expect to hear about it. I would expect the same from any or all of you, if someone is mishandling their firearm and you feel uncomfortable, stand-up and say something. You are a paying member of this organization, it is your right to defend your privilege to use the ranges. Worst case scenario, someone is killed. Second worse case, we are shut down and you lose your privileges all together and right now we are a breath away from losing the outdoor range. Best case scenario, we all have fun, we all feel comfortable and safe and we stay safe. Please have fun but more so, do it safely and within the prescribed rules because they are in place for the safety of all people involved. RANGE SAFETY Darren Whittier RED DEER FISH & GAME HABITAT LAND Harold Drok I had a weekend that caused me concern. On the Saturday morning I taught an RSO course and I thought I was very clear about all subjects, however, Saturday afternoon I went to the outdoor range to find myself forced to speak to four separate people about their mishandling of firearms. For example, one person I spoke to was handling his rifle and ammo at the firing line while the green light was on and there were people downrange changing targets. Another person was unboxing his firearm and waving it recklessly around at the bench behind the firing line. Both of these acts, I consider, to be very dangerous. When I spoke to them the look on their faces were, at first, of non understanding then suddenly a light came on and the expression changed to "oh crap!" The time between non understanding and oh crap was RED DEER FISH & GAME NEWSLETTER plenty of time for someone to get injured or killed. I know all the other instructors are dishing out basically the same information so why is this happening? The Habitat Land has had some activity this winter with a few people ice fishing and the Junior Forest Wardens using the camp kitchen for a winter exercise and the Penhold Cadets using the land for a winter exercise the last Saturday in February. We have a number of projects planned for the Habitat Land in 2015, this winter we replaced the wood stove and chimney in the group area and will be renovating the kitchen, installing a septic tank and building an outhouse below the main campground in the over-flow area. We will also be installing a new dock to the south of the existing pier to increase shore-fishing opportunities. 1ST QUARTER 2015 Page 4 If you would like to book the F&G Habitat Land for 2015, please call Harold Drok at 403.877.2403. Booking youth groups is the Habitat Land priority and we do not book the Habitant Land on Long Weekends, the campground is reserved for the Red Deer Fish & Game Members. The campground cannot be booked for exclusive use, groups using the campground and bathrooms may be sharing the facilities with members camping or fishing at the Habitat Land. Con’t from President’s Report THE WINTER GAMES I did hear that our junior shooters did very well in Prince George, I am anxious to here all the details and want to make sure the Advocate sports editor Greg Meachem does another great article on their success; with photo of trophies and uniformed team members. THE ALBERTA YOUTH PHEASANT PROGRAM Doug Wood 2015 SPORTSMAN AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURE SHOW Jeff Chocholacek The 2015 Sportsman and Outdoor Adventure Show went well. A few us went to the Edmonton show and spoke with exhibitors and from what we understand, they were pleased with our show. We are working on different guest speakers and additional exhibitors for the 2016 show. I would like to thank all the people who volunteered to help out with security as we had very few problems. Again I am asking if anyone has some different ideas for the 50th anniversary show in 2016, please contact me at [email protected] or by phone 403346-1873 or 403-505-1656. The suggestions we got for last year's show were very few and the people I was asked to approach either didn't get back to me or didn't think was the show for them. With this year being our 50th anniversary, we would like to have lots of different and interesting exhibits so get your ideas to me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so we can work on them. Again, we would really like to thank the suppliers of our door prizes and congratulate the winners: As far as the Alberta Youth Pheasant Program is concerned, we are trying to line up birds for this year. We may get some from the 4H clubs, but only hens. We have been told that the Safari Club International Red Deer Branch will make a substantial contribution during their annual banquet that happens to be on the Saturday of our Sportsman Show. We also will have to buy some birds directly from Wisconsin again. The good part of that is the roosters they supply in September are very big and healthy; the bad part is how expensive they are. On the same note, I was overwhelmed a few times last year with juggling kids names, the dates they can come and the parents queries; then lining up dog handlers and gun safety staff. I admit I need some help, so anybody who would like to take over some of the duties would be welcomed. The only requirement is you have to like hunting, shooting, pheasants and kids, in that order. Thanks Chris Anderson of Blackfalds - fishing trip for 2 from Adventure Destinations Cole Goodwin of Red Deer - guided trail ride and fly fishing weekend from Ram River Tours Marjorie Gogo of Red Deer - trail camera from New World Outfitters Samantha Lockhart - kids door prize - fishing package from Sportsmen's Den RED DEER FISH & GAME NEWSLETTER OUT DOOR RANGE Rob McCoy Not too much to report, everything is going along as it should.. W e have quite an influx of new membership and it would be nice if you older, more experienced shooters would take an interest in some of our newers h o o t e r s and guide them gently if you see them wander from the path of righteousness at the range. In particular I would like to see you older guys helping the newer pistol shooters as in there 1ST QUARTER 2015 Page 5 trap at the 25 and the 50 and could use a welder to repair one more plate. lies our greatest possibility of a stray bullet they don't even seem to hit the bullet trap sometimes, so if you see stray bullets or what not, try to help the shooter achieve accuracy. Happy Shooting NOTE! Right now with the thaw we are experiencing a lot of ice on the hill down to the range and have had some people stuck down there, so please buy some tire chains if you are going down often in the winter they don't cost much and don't take up a lot of room in your trunk but are really handy little gadgets if you’re stuck down there. Don't call me if you are stuck! CANADIAN FIREARM SAFETY COURSE Venny Chocholacek We’re still doing a course once a month, other that in July and August. Still do not know where are the students are still coming from. Our March and April classes are already filled and we are taking names for May and June. Course dates are Saturday, May 8, and Sunday, June 7, 2015. We have quite a bit of new plywood for the backstops but if some of you work in lumber yards we can use all the 4x8 sheets of 3/8 we can get. Typically cover sheets from full lifts of plywood are what we are looking for as we can get these quite cheaply from the lumber yards. If you are interested in taking the course or challenging the exams, please phone, Warden, at 403-340-9375 or myself,Venny, at 403-3473767. CENALTA YOUTH CONSERVATION CAMP Venny Chocholacek Not to bitch or whine but again we have someone shooting rifle at the pistol targets. This shot goes right though and we have a rogue bullet flying around and if it leaves the range and hits a neighbor we are done. I will not accept phone calls telling me I have to attend countless meetings with neighbors and County to try and open the range again, I will just simply quit and go do some of my other hobbies. Camp dates are July 12 to July 17, 2015. By the time you read this, I am sure this year’s camp will be filled, as it is on a “first come, first served” basis. I am taking names for the 2016 camp (July 1015, 2016). Already have 4 students tentatively wanting to go. His is an excellent opportunity to send a son or daughter to spend the week to get their Hunter Ed & Canadian Firearm Safety Course along with getting hands on shooting experience with .22 and shotgun. They will also get Survival Training with, (andeing, archery, black powder, first aid, etc.) Also will other interesting speakers and guests. Thanks to those of you that are using the range as it should be used, following the rules and being safe. OUTDOOR RANGE REPORT Rob McCoy Everything is going well we have the place painted and the lights and the fans work well. We did some blackpowder down there and were able to clear the area almost immediately. Please be carefull with your pistols as we are getting the odd round into the sign above the traps and that ain’t good Will be doing a work party on the 22 and 23 of July at the outdoor range to build a new rifle RED DEER FISH & GAME NEWSLETTER BINGO Gerrie Chocholacek Next bingos are April 23, May 28, & June 4, 2015. November 21 to 23 the team travelled to Winnipeg for the Prairie Open competition. In the first match on Saturday, Ashley Pikkert shot 356k; Raelynne Pikkert 355.
