A bountiful supper was had, followed by ice cream and a birthday cake. Emma Skahill entertained us with her speech she had entered in the Oratorical Contest. Submitted by Al Carmichael Correction to the article from Butch Countryman: Jim and Betty Pierce ran The Spot Café when they came to Redfield in June of 1950. A year later they relocated to the brick building north of Vernie Reed’s shoe shop. The shoe shop was torn down some time after that. When the Pierce Café opened in about 1951, Roscoe Crowl took over The Spot Café. It was discussed about who started the Legion breakfast on Saturday mornings. Gene Martin is the only one around who knew anything so here is his answer. Roscoe Crowl suggested it and talked to Jack Hill. The two of them thought it was a good idea and might work so they contacted other Legion members to ask for help. I could list names but most people know who they were and I would hate to leave out anyone. The first breakfast, I believe, was pancakes, biscuits and gravy and coffee. Shortly afterwards, they began frying eggs and other stuff. Just think, 32 years of dedication to help out school, scouts, City of Redfield, and the many other projects we have helped with. Blood drives have been an integral part of the Redfield community for at least 35 years, probably longer. The Et-A-Virp Federated Women’s Club sponsored them for many years and later the Tuesday Club became a joint sponsor. When those two organizations disbanded, Bonnie Baker and I were left as chairs and we continued this commitment to saving lives through blood donations. Now, approximately 30 years and 10,000 saved lives later, I find it is time to “pass the torch” to someone else. My husband is retiring at the end of the year and we are looking forward to new experiences in the next chapter of our lives. The November drive will be my last as chairman. I am looking for an individual, organization or group to assume the responsibility of organizing the blood drives in cooperation with LifeServe Blood Center. Ideally, the new chairperson(s) will be in place by at least the September drive so that we can work together and they can have at least one drive under their belt before taking over for the January drive. We have a solid donor base as well as a strong core of volunteers who have agreed to assist in the future with appointment scheduling, canteen help, etc., and sponsors are in place for the remainder of 2015 and into 2016. To find out just what the job entails, give me a call at 833-2991 or e-mail [email protected]. Please consider becoming a part of this life-saving endeavor. Thanks to everyone for their continued support over the years! April 2015 Issue: Page 6 Becky Simpson Help Older Iowans WIN Outreach helps reduce hunger [ADEL, Iowa]—Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Human Sciences Specialist in nutrition and health, Mary Krisco, is looking to recruit volunteers from Dallas County to become WIN Program volunteer educators. WIN (Wellness and Independence through Nutrition) is an outreach project to reduce hunger in the lives of underserved mid-life and older Iowans with limited incomes. In Iowa’s population, adults who are 50 years or older comprise 35% of the population, according to the last U.S. Census. Of this percentage, 78% are considered “at-risk” or “at possible risk” for malnutrition, and 7% are considered “food insecure,” lacking access to affordable nutrition. Nationally, it is estimated three out of ten people eligible for food assistance are not yet enrolled. Through WIN, ISU Extension and Outreach’s goal is to increase food assistance awareness, enrollment and usage. Increasing awareness of budget-friendly nutrition practices is also an essential part of the program. The role of a WIN volunteer educator is to conduct interactive presentations about healthy eating and container gardening to Iowans age 50 years or older. Volunteer educators are asked to attend a 90-minute training at the Dallas County Extension office in Adel. Volunteers will be taught how to conduct the presentations and how to contact congregate meal sites, senior centers and other organizations to schedule these presentations. The time commitment of each WIN volunteer educator will vary. Each presentation is 30 minutes, with about one hour of travel time, preparation and paperwork. For someone who decides to conduct two presentations a month the estimated volunteer time is three to four hours. All volunteers will receive 39 cents per mile as a travel expense. To arrange for a WIN training session or for more information, contact Mary Krisco at (515) 957-5787 or [email protected]. Already volunteering in a similar outreach program? Please contact Mary if interested in sharing WIN materials or showcasing a WIN display board at an upcoming hunger outreach event.
