Redfield American Legion Auxiliary
The December meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary was held the evening of the 17th with
twelve members answering roll call. The Secretary’s report of the November meeting was read
and approved followed by a report of our monies by the Treasurer. It was good to see Velda
again.
The correspondence was read and discussed. Julie Bailey had a nice letter from the Puppy
Jake people thanking us for the nice evening they had with us and our donation to them.
The Girls’ State Program was talked about. No one has applied to go. Our money has been
sent in so if we don’t have someone go we get it back. We hope someone goes as it is a
worthy program.
A discussion was had on helping someone at Christmas but as it is so late our help we gave
moneywise to the Sarah’s Caring will be it for this year. We also gave to the Food Pantry
earlier.
There being no further business we adjourned.
Mary Rolston served a very tasty cupcake and a good hot cup of coffee before we journeyed
home.

Redfield American Legion Auxiliary Looking for Girls State Candidates
Iowa Girls State is one of the premier programs sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and was
all started by a dream of four women over 66 years ago in hopes of teaching young women about the
political process. Girls State is a "learning by doing" program, which takes the girls through the entire
political process.
It covers city government which is non-partisan in Iowa. Each citizen is assigned to a floor, which is her
city for the week. Early in the week, the girls elect their mayors and city councils, transact city business,
pass city ordinances and work on a city project for judging later. They are also divided into political
parties and campaign to get their parties candidates elected and create party loyalty. By the end of the
week, they have elected county and state officials. On Friday evening, Inauguration is held which
includes the closing of the final joint session of the House and Senate, the installation of the Governor
and her officials, and many scholarships are awarded and the Girls Nation Senators are announced.
Girls State Citizens must be between their junior and senior year of high school and are selected by their
local American Legion Auxiliary Unit.
The Redfield American Legion Auxiliary selects a local girl each year to attend Girls State, a youth
citizenship program for young women. Girls State will be held Sunday, June 15, 2014 through Friday,
June 20, 2014 on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

Redfield Medical Clinic News
Expanded Health Insurance assistance is now available:
To see if you are eligible for health care insurance and compare the cost of policies go to
www.healthcare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596. If you have problems applying or questions
you can contact a health care navigator. For Dallas County residents call the visiting nurses
services at 515 288-1516 or PP Heartland at 877 811-7525.
Eligibility for assistance with the cost of health care insurance now extends up to 400% of the
Federal Poverty Level (approximately $46,000 for a single individual). One never knows when
catastrophic illness or injury will occur so it is best to be prepared by having medical
insurance.
Avoiding "colds":
There still is no cure for the common cold. Nor is there an immunization to prevent a cold.
But getting a flu immunization may decrease the chance of contacting a cold. So can regular
exercise, drinking plenty of fluids, keeping hands away from your face, adequate and regular
sleep, hand washing, proper humidity and hand sanitizer use. And, remember, antibiotics do
nothing for the common cold. If you contract a cold treat the symptoms. If you have
questions contact your health care provider.

and Danielson, and Clerk Light.
Mayor Alt asked if there were any additions to the agenda. Two items were added under new

equipment. A motion was made by Godwin-Pote and seconded by Lantz to add these two items
and approve the agenda. Roll call vote – all ayes.

Clay Leonard, Dallas County Deputy, reported on some thefts in the area and after checking city
code, he will speak with Hayden regarding parking his truck in the business district as several
close calls of accidents have been reported to the clerk’s office. The council also discussed people
burning leaves in the street, which is prohibited.
Jon McAvoy, representative for the Greater Dallas County Development Alliance spoke to the
council about the importance of renewal of membership. The rate is still $2 per capita.
Terry Danielson, Public Works Director, reported a leak was fixed on Clark and Taylor. He also
had results of a Sanitary Survey from the DNR which listed requirements, all of which are done,
and recommendations for the future. The main recommendation was to prepare for the water
storage tank to be out of service, cleaned, and painted while ensuring system pressures stay the
same. Danielson will contact Xenia Rural Water regarding an emergency hookup while cleaning
the tower and report back on this issue.
Danielson said he talked to Denny Wisecup and he will be here within two weeks to clear the
property south of City Hall.
