FROM THE CHAIR
2014 has been a year of unparalleled change for the arts and culture
sector, with vast movements in the policy and funding landscapes across a
wide range of areas that offer a myriad of challenges to us all.
This has not only resulted in levels of uncertainty for many in the sector
but also presented a new range of opportunities. Within this environment,
the important role that Regional Arts NSW plays as the peak body and
support agency for arts and cultural development in NSW, has more than
ever come to the forefront.
In 2014, Regional Arts NSW has responded and risen to meet these
challenges, both as an organisation and on behalf of the sector as a
whole. This year we have aspired to take RANSW’s operations to a new
level in order for us to fulfil our mission: to champion, develop and support
the creative arts and cultural sector through the network of regional
arts boards in NSW. To achieve these aspirations, RANSW undertook the
strategic development of a new business plan for 2015 – 18 to ensure
that we are well placed to have a significant impact on the strength,
professionalism, resilience and profile of the regional arts network
throughout NSW.
This Year In Review illustrates our key achievements for the past
12 months.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW 2014
STRUCTURE
The current organisational structure of RANSW (as per
diagram to the right) has been in place since 2009 when a
major review of the governance structure led to a revision
of the Constitution and shifted the RANSW Board from a
representative to a skills-based model. Prior to this time,
directors of the Board were delegates (usually the Chair)
of each of the RABs but, as the number of RABs grew,
effective governance was impacted by the subsequent size
of the Board, the frequent turnover of board members,
the financial costs of bringing the Board together and the
difficulties in maintaining a spread of skills and knowledge.
After the restructure, representation from all the RABs
continued through an Advisory Council that meets annually
prior to the AGM. Strategic and operational issues are
discussed at the tri-annual two-day meetings of Regional
Arts Development Officers, RAB staff and RANSW staff.

WALSH BAY ARTS TABLE
In partnership with Walsh Bay Arts and Commerce, RANSW hosted
a fundraising dinner on the apron of Pier 2, Walsh Bay in Sydney
on 11 November. An annual event benefiting the non-profit arts
organisations located at Walsh Bay, this year it was all about the
regions with artworks and performances by regional artists. The
Deputy Premier, Minister for the Arts and Member for Dubbo, the
Hon. Troy Grant MP was the guest speaker and launched Artlands
Dubbo 2016 to a Sydney audience. All funds raised will be used to
support this event.

BLACK ARTS MARKET
RANSW partnered with Corroboree Sydney to support regional
Aboriginal artists and groups to participate in the Black Arts
Market held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in
November. As well as achieving sales the participants gained
commissions, offers to attend other markets, learnt about the
marketplace, networked, shared skills and made new connections.
There were 22 stalls, 185 regional artists attending and sales of
approximately $60,000 on the day. RANSW supported travel and
accommodation through the Regional Arts Fund.
