RAHWAY FIREFIGHTERS WIN TOP HONORS IN COOK-OFF
Fifth annual event to benefit NJ State Firefighter’s Mutual Benevolent Assoc. and Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation
On Monday February 23, 2015, firefighters from around
New Jersey competed at the Cooked and Uncorked Food and
Wine Festival benefiting New Jersey State Firefighter’s
Mutual Benevolent Association (NJSFMB) and Saint
Barnabas Burn Foundation. The competition is part of the
culinary extravaganza where participants experienced the
tastes and flavors of more than twenty-eight of New Jersey’s
finest restaurants, caterers and dessert shops, as well as 34
tables of liquor vendors all in one location. Rahway
restaurants that participated included Kim’s In The Mix,
Cubanu, and Luchiano’s.
The event, which drew more than 1,000 people from
throughout New Jersey, was held at The Pines Manor in
Edison. Some of the quotes heard were “Amazing Event”,
“The Food and Beverages were incredible”, “The Fire
Departments out did themselves this year”, “Tried so many
different kinds of beverages”, “I’ll be back next year and
bring my friends”.
The Ultimate Fire Department Cook-off was an integral
part of the evening as twenty-five fire departments competed
for top honors in “Gourmet Cooking”, “Firehouse Cooking”,
and “Peoples’ Choice”. Rahway competed against teams
from Union, Cranford, Bayonne, Carteret, Elizabeth,
Hillside, Hamilton Twp., New Brunswick, Long Branch,
Linden, Plainfield, South Orange, Trenton, Roselle,
Millburn, Rahway, Maplewood, Nutley, and Paterson.
The Rahway Fire Department placed 2nd in the category
“Firehouse Cooking”. The team consisted of chefs Randy
Peterson, Javier Gonzalez, Ateve Niro, Patrick Moffitt, Dave
Delaney, and Charlie Leone.
Rahway’s menu was a traditional clambake which
(above, l-r) Rahway Fire Department chefs:

consisted of snow crab, littleneck clams, shrimp, chorizo
sausage, garlic cloves, red potato and fresh corn on the cob,
portioned in individual sacks and steamed in an Old Bay and
citrus fruit brine, served with clarified butter and Old Bay
spice packs. The dish was complimented with chef Moffitts'
home made sangria. Rahway Local 33 would like to
recognize and thank the American Legion Post 5 for their
generosity in enabling them to prep their meal in their
gourmet kitchen.
Established in 1987, Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation
serves as the education, research and fundraising arm of The
Burn Center. It provides essential financial support to burn
patients and their families, fire safety programs for the
community, training programs for professionals, as well as
medical equipment for The Burn Center.

11 CRITICAL HOME
INSPECTION TRAPS TO BE
AWARE OF WEEKS BEFORE
LISTING YOUR HOME FOR SALE
Rahway NJ - According to industry experts,
there are over 33 physical problems that will come
under scrutiny during a home inspection when
your home is for sale. A new report has been
prepared which identifies the eleven most common
of these problems, and what you should know
about them before you list your home for sale.
Whether you own an old home or a brand new
one, there are a number of things that can fall short
of requirements during a home inspection. If not
identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items
could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why
it's critical that you read this report before you list
your home. If you wait until the building inspector
flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly
experience costly delays in the close of your home
sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away
altogether. In most cases, you can make a
reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know
what you're looking for, and knowing what you're
looking for can help you prevent little problems
from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.
To help homesellers deal with this issue before
their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11
Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home
Inspection" has been compiled which explains the
issues involved.

ASHLEY SPINKS 1,000 POINTS
Submitted by: Lauren Palermo

point for the girls’ basketball team. This has
been a goal as long as Ashley remembers.
Coached by her father, Henry Spinks, since she
could hold a basketball, Ashley is only the
second girl in the school’s history to claim this
feat. Ashley has been chasing her dream since
she joined the team in middle school.
Ms. Spinks, due to a miscalculation, went into
the home game against Plainfield thinking she
needed 55 points to reach her goal; therefore,
she felt no pressure and was able to play her
usual game. In reality, she only needed to score
6 points. She was shocked and confused when
the game stopped and her team jumped on her.
Coach Brown presented her with a
commemorative basketball to note her
accomplishment, amidst the cheers and
congratulations of the crowd. Ms. Spinks, when
interviewed, stated, “I could not have
accomplished this goal without the support of
my team, Coach Brown, and my father. Their
love and support has allowed me to conquer this
long-held dream. I am so happy.” “Since I was a
freshman, I knew I wanted to make this happen
and have worked as hard as I could.” It is
interesting to note that as soon as the game was
over, Ashley quickly changed and ran down the (above, l-r) Rahway High School senior Ashley

SPRING FEVER
After a long cold snowy winter, spring is

millions of people around the world. Before

Now that spring is about to arrive it is time for
the garden clean up. Although many will work

such a rapid pace that Tulip mania is considered
the first 'economic bubble'. Great family
fortunes were gained and lost by trading this
bulb and it's seeds. In February 1637 the entire
trend collapsed within a few days leaving many
bankrupt.
In modern times most of the tulips we
purchase still come from Holland and are a
major international export.
In April and May tulips are sold as potted
plants and cut flowers. They are affordable and
always appreciated as a special gift.
To get the most from your cut tulips try to buy
flowers that are still tight. They will open
quickly. Give them a fresh 'straight' cut and
place them in a vase with cool (not cold) water
and flower crystals. In a few days your tulips
will require fresh water.
After potted tulips have bloomed they are
depleted and will not do well as a garden plant.
Sadly, they not worth the effort it takes to plant
them.

RAHWAY RESIDENTS AMONG CLASS FROM TRINITAS SCHOOL OF NURSING
With nursing diplomas and Associate in
Science degrees from Union County College
(UCC) in hand, the January class of the Trinitas
School of Nursing celebrated their completion
of the program at graduation exercises. The
class included 75 women and 13 men,
continuing a trend of increasing numbers of men

MILTON FRIEDMAN: FROM RAHWAY HIGH TO NOBEL PRIZE
Submitted by Al Shipley, City Historian and Rahway Library Research Consultant
On Tuesday evening, June 19, 1928,
commencement exercises for the Rahway High
School graduating class of 1928 were held in the
Franklin School auditorium. Of the sixty-eight
graduates, 16-year-old senior, Milton Friedman,
garnered the most prestigious awards. Not only
was Friedman the valedictorian, but he also
received $10.00 in gold for the highest average
in Math and was awarded a prize for
maintaining the highest average in Science over
his four years in high school. It is little wonder
that this promising young student would one day
become a world famous economist and public
intellectual who would ultimately be presented a
Nobel Prize.
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1912, the
Friedman family came to Rahway when Milton
was still an infant and moved into a small
building on Main Street, between Monroe and
Poplar (the building, which was razed by the
mid-1990s, stood on a portion of the site of what
is now Luciano’s Italian Restaurant). The
family lived in an apartment above a dry goods
store which was operated by Milton’s mother.
Mr. Friedman was in the garment business,
working in Rahway and often commuting to
New York City.
By the sixth grade, Milton was already
demonstrating his academic brilliance. He had
done so well in the sixth grade at Washington
School that he was excused from his final
examinations. The precocious young student
asked his teacher if he might take the seventh
grade final exam, “just for fun.” He was given
permission and ended up scoring higher than
any of the seventh graders. As a result, school
officials allowed him to skip a grade.
Upon finishing high school, Friedman
attended Rutgers University and graduated in
1932 with a double major in Mathematics and
Economics. He considered entering a field
where he could utilize his math abilities, perhaps
as an actuary, but it was the height of the

(above) Milton Friedman on the cover of an
issue of Time Magazine in 1969.
Depression and his professors instilled in him
the notion that the economic difficulties could
be solved with the implementation of creative
economic principles. Friedman took the advice
of his mentors and accepted a scholarship to the
University of Chicago where he earned an M.A.
in Economics in 1933. He would later go on to
earn a PhD at Columbia University.
Conservative in his views, Friedman
advocated minimizing the role of government in
a free market as a means of creating political
and social freedom. His views on monetary
policy, taxation, privatization, and deregulation
would influence the policies of governments
around the globe including the United States.
During his career he became a major advisor to
President Ronald Reagan serving on the
President’s Economic Policy Advisory Board.
Often referred to as the “guru” of the Reagan
Administration, President Reagan honored him
with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988.
Friedman’s ideas also influenced many world
leaders including Margaret Thatcher of Britain,
Brian Mulroney of Canada, and Augusto
Pinochet of Chile.
Friedman was also an outspoken proponent of
a volunteer military and during the
administration of Richard Nixon he headed a
committee to research a conversion to a
paid/volunteer armed force.
Friedman
considered his part in eliminating conscription
as his proudest accomplishment.
On October 14, 1976, he was the sole
recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic
Sciences. Officials of the Swedish Royal
Academy of Science selected Friedman, “For
his achievements in the fields of consumption
analysis, monetary history and theory, and for
his demonstration of the complexity of
stabilization policy.”
In 1980, the Public Broadcasting Service
(PBS) aired a ten-part television series titled
“Free to Choose,” which presented Friedman’s
economic and social philosophy. Friedman and
his wife, Rose, co-authored a companion piece
to the series that became the best-selling nonfiction book of 1980. Since its publication, the
book has been translated into 14 languages.
Milton Friedman passed away on November
16, 2006. According to the “Economist,” a
scholarly publication based in London, Milton
Friedman was “the most influential economist of
the second half of the 20th century, possibly of
all of it.” Former Federal Reserve Board
Chairman, Alan Greenspan, when commenting
on Friedman, stated, “There are very few people
over the generations who have ideas that are
sufficiently original to materially alter the
direction of civilization. Milton is one of those
very few people.”
With his roots in Rahway and his formative
educational training in the Rahway schools, the
city can claim this remarkable world figure as
one of its most notable citizens.
