SEMINAR SERIES 2015 When: Where: Monday, 25 May @ 12:00 pm Followed by light lunch Rand Theatre, Level 8, Medical Building The University of Melbourne Traumatic brain injury to the paediatric brain Doctor Bridgette Semple Department of Medicine (Royal Melbourne Hospital), The University of Melbourne After completed her undergraduate degree at Monash University, Bridgette Semple conducted her graduate research at the National Trauma Research Institute (Alfred Hospital, Melbourne) and was awarded her PhD in 2010. Her postdoctoral work took her to the US, where she has spent the past four years at the University of California San Francisco. Working with Prof. Linda Noble in the Department of Neurological Surgery, and with the support of fellowships from both the American Australian Association and the NHMRC, her research has focused on understanding the mechanisms and consequences of traumatic brain injuries during early childhood using a mouse model. Building upon an emerging appreciation for the unique vulnerability of the immature brain to insult, Dr. Semple's work has identified key neutrophil-derived proteases which mediate acute tissue damage after paediatric brain injury. Dr. Semple has recently returned to Melbourne and joined the O'Brien laboratory in the Department of Medicine (Royal Melbourne Hospital and Melbourne Brain Centre), and is continuing to explore the hypothesis that modulation of the post-injury inflammatory response influences long-term outcomes.
