Keynote Presentation
Personalized Medicine | Individualizing Treatment Using Scientific Evidence
Educational Goal | To define and demonstrate how personalized medicine is
being integrated into current medical practice through evidence-based and
clinical research-based approaches. To evaluate the changing landscape in
terms of more efficient and specific utilization of medical resources, and how
new diagnostics can individualize treatment options for patients.
Target Audience | Medical, dental and pharmacy faculty, residents and fellows
Learning Objectives
1. Examine the definition of personalized medicine as it relates to diagnostic
testing and therapeutics. Recognize the time course of disease risk, disease
manifestation and current treatment approaches.
2. Recognize that new high throughput modalities such as genomics,
proteomics and metabolomics already have been integrated in medical
applications which include risk assessment and individualized therapeutic
response.
3. Identify that “generic dosing” and generalized drug/device treatment
algorithms are not efficient in terms of resource utilization and efficacy.
Examine specific examples of personalized medicine in terms of
cardiovascular disease prognosis and device treatment in terms of heart
failure and cardiac resynchronization therapy.
