2014 Annual Report - Rice Health Foundation

Caring for Our Community ... Together
annual report
for fiscal year ending december 31, 2014
From the Board President and Executive Director
Dear Friends,
2014 was a year of accomplishment and progress for the Rice Health
Foundation. We are grateful for your continuing support and are pleased to
share highlights of the year in this report.
We celebrated the completion of Rice Care Center’s multi-year, five phased
expansion and remodel project. The final product is amazing and exceeded our
lofty expectations! Your generous giving made the facility what it has become:
a comfortable, state-of-the-art long term care community for seniors to enjoy.
Philanthropy not only helped Rice Memorial Hospital create neighborhoods
for seniors, it also enabled Rice to invest more of its resources to expand
Therapy Suites and better meet the short term recovery and rehabilitation
needs of area residents. With one year remaining in the three-year fundraising
campaign for this project, we are now $300,000.00 shy of meeting our
$2 million commitment to Rice for this incredible community asset.
As increasing demands on healthcare continue, keeping Rice Memorial
Hospital current with new technology, advanced staff training and high
quality medical services remains paramount for the Foundation. That is why
we are developing our Planned Giving program to offer more opportunities for
individuals and families to leave a legacy that directly support local healthcare
services into the future.
Many programs and services that improve the health and well-being of
patients and the community are only made available with funding from
the Foundation.
None of these accomplishments would be possible without the many dedicated
volunteers who in addition to their gifts, contributed nearly 1000 hours to
continue the Foundation’s work. We are truly grateful for the generosity and
support of each person who helps us carry out the mission of the Foundation:
“Through philanthropy, Rice Health Foundation supports the vitality and
quality of care of Rice Memorial Hospital”.
Thank you for another year of cooperation and support. Thank you for all you
do for Rice!

With a match from the Otto Bremer Foundation, the Holiday Festival raised
a record $360k to expand inpatient mental health services at Rice and provide
Telestroke technology, which aids in the rapid diagnosis of stroke patients
entering the emergency room. Friends of Rice rose to the challenge and
established a new major sponsorship category that helped us leverage the
Bremer gift.

Tradition of Caring Award
Rice Visionary Society
Dr. Lachlan Smith was honored with
the Tradition of Caring Award at
the annual Donor Recognition event
on May 1, 2014. He was recognized
for his gifts of support, service and
strong, quiet leadership.
Catch the Vision, be a Planned Giver
Dr. Smith dedicated nine years of
service to the Rice Health Foundation
Board. Two of those years, he served
as president. During his tenure, the
Foundation implemented strategic
initiatives to position itself for future
success; and transitioned from grant
making to a successful healthcare
fundraising organization, better
aligned to help the Hospital achieve
its mission. He was also instrumental
in planning the fundraising campaign
to redevelop the Rice Care Center.
A gift in your estate will help Rice continue quality services that support birthing,
healing, aging and dying.
“
Making a planned gift is the single most effective way to ensure Rice Memorial
Hospital continues into the future. Local healthcare services that meet your needs
and the needs of your loved ones and friends today, can only continue into the future
with your planned gift.
Thank you to members of the Rice Visionary Society. Community members who said
yes to keeping quality services like hospice, behavioral health and eldercare funded
for the future.
Dr. Smith is the model physician who understands
collaboration and leads by example. He is a true ‘salt of
the earth’.”
“
Michael Schramm, CEO
Rice Memorial Hospital
We are deeply grateful to Dr. Smith for leaving the
Foundation in a much better position than he met it.”

SPOTLIGHT ON: SUPPORTERS
Ken and Alix Behm
Ken was raised on a farm north of Atwater, while Alix grew up in Minneapolis.
They met at the University of Minnesota, where Ken was studying ag business and
Alix was studying interior design. Soon after graduation, the two were married.
Ken and Alix moved back to the area in 1971. They have three adult children who
also reside locally with their families. Together, the family operates Home State Bank,
which they have owned since they relocated.
Ken and Alix have a mutual love for Willmar and West Central Minnesota. They feel
it is important that Rice Memorial Hospital continues to provide quality health care
services in the region.
How did you get involved in philanthropy?
Philanthropy allows us to demonstrate our passion for the community. We enjoy
giving to our church and our community. We have been blessed with the ability to
share our gifts with others.
What inspires you to give?
The Willmar area has been supportive of us, so we have decided to make financial
contributions back to the community, in places where it makes the most impact.
What organizations are you involved in?
We are active members and supporters of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Concordia
University in St. Paul, Rice Health Foundation, United Way, and Safe Avenues. We
feel it’s important that our support extends beyond our faith community and touches
the lives of others in many different ways.
Why is support of Rice important to you?
Rice is a city-owned hospital that provides high quality health care for Willmar and
surrounding areas. We have been part of the Willmar area for 44 years and believe
in building a strong community. It is very important to us that quality health care
remains accessible locally because, it is essential for the future strength and success of
the region.

Work Here ... Give Here
Rice Employees Go Above and Beyond
Rice Employees aren’t just dedicated to the work they do at Rice
every day of the year. They go that extra mile by making gifts to the
Foundation to enhance healthcare services for the benefit of everyone.
The annual Employee Campaign is a fun time when employees
demonstrate that they work and give at Rice.
“
I support Rice Health Foundation
because it provides equipment or
services that might not otherwise
be available.”
Rachel Cruz
Staffing Department
Employee contributions over the previous twelve years total over
$673,000, making significant improvements in the delivery of care
provided by Rice.
Job Swap Challenge
Rice’s Chief Executive Officer,
Mike Schramm, swapped
jobs with Nursing Service
Technician, Jed Bendix. Jed
was chosen to swap jobs
with Mike by employee
donors to the 2014 Rice
Health Foundation Employee
Campaign. At the end of the
day they agreed, both jobs
are critical to the smooth
operation of Rice Hospital!
“
I give to the Rice Health Foundation
because I believe that the Rice
Health Foundation improves the
quality of care that we are able to
provide to our community.”
Aron Meyer
Nursing Services Technician
“
I believe that Rice Hospital is a
wonderful asset to our community.
I donate to the Rice Health
Foundation because I am proud to
work at Rice and be a part of an
organization that helps individuals
at their most vulnerable moments.
By giving to the Foundation, I know
I am doing my part to promote the
health and wellness of our patients
and community.”

FOCUS ON: Rice Care Center Progress
Grand Reopening
In October 2014, residents and staff at Rice Care Center opened their
doors for donors and the public to get a glimpse into their wonderful
world of community living!
An Open House was held on Tuesday, October 28 for people who
made major contributions to the three-year Live Laugh Thrive Capital
Campaign. A community Open House was held the following day, on
Wednesday, October 29, with over 600 people in attendance.
After several years of being “under construction,” the expanded
Therapy Suites, two long term care neighborhoods — Sophia House and
Cushman Cottage, and community spaces are finally complete!
Sophia House and Cushman Cottage allow seniors to live comfortably,
enjoy privacy, make decisions about their daily lives, and participate
in activities that stimulate their minds and keep them engaged. Each
neighborhood has its own private entrance, private rooms with private
toilets and showers, as well as spaces for private and community
activities. Amenities include The Gathering Place for large events, Suzie’s
Styles Beauty Salon, a café, and a large canopy with beautiful gardens.
Rice Health Foundation needs $300,000 more to reach its $2 million
commitment to Rice Memorial Hospital for this project. Every dollar
raised reduces Rice’s debt obligation to improve senior living.
We are grateful to everyone who played a role in creating this warm and
beautiful place where dignity and respect for seniors are preserved —
a place they are proud to call home.

Enhancing community life at Rice
9
Caring for Our Community ... Together
In 2014, Rice Health Foundation provided $1,050,400 to Rice Memorial Hospital to support a variety of programs and services,
as well as technology and equipment. This support is possible because of your generous gifts to Rice Health Foundation
designated funds and endowments.
The Rice Health Foundation Endowment was established to provide a stable and consistent source of funds to help meet the
changing needs in healthcare. Grants approved by the Foundation Board from endowments accounted for more than
$194,000 in support to the Hospital in 2014. Some of the endowment grants awarded are highlighted here.
Ready for Anything
New Technology Opens Airways
In 2014, there were 788 births at Rice.
A majority of births are normal, resulting
in a healthy baby and a happy, healthy
mother. Grant funds purchased simulation
equipment that enable all members of
the healthcare team to work together and
improve the outcome for each mother
and child in the event of a high risk
obstetrical emergency.
A functioning airway is essential to deliver
oxygen to a patient’s vital organs, especially
the brain. Foundation grant funds have
provided the latest model of laryngoscopes –
the tool used to open patients’ airways.
Breathe Easier
Respiratory Therapists are seeing more
and more hospitalized patients who
also suffer from sleep disorders. The
Foundation funded additional equipment
to regulate patients’ airway pressure,
better manage this chronic condition,
and improve the quality of life for
patients, during their hospital stay and
after discharge.
10
Saving Time, Saving Lives
Every year in the United States, more
than 1.25 million people suffer cardiac
emergencies that result in death or loss
of partial heart function. In a 24-month
period, 28 people suffering cardiac arrest
were treated at Rice. When it comes to
heart attacks, speedy treatment is crucial.
Defibrillators are lifesaving equipment the
ambulance crew uses to transmit cardiac
patients’ data to emergency physicians
for assessment while being transported to
the hospital. Grant funds purchased two
defibrillators for the Willmar Ambulance Service.
This allows physicians to monitor patients in real
time and determine the appropriate interventions to save lives.
Giving Newborns the Best Start
Breastfeeding is the primary infant
feeding choice for new mothers
delivering at Rice Hospital’s Women
& Children’s Care unit. Lactation
counselors provide new mothers
the support they need to initiate
breastfeeding. Grant funds made
certification training possible, to
expand and maintain the pool of
knowledgeable lactation nurses who
help mothers and their newborns with
lactation services.
Improving the Health and Wellness of the Community
The ReYou Wellness Program was
created in 2013 to create awareness,
provide education and coaching
to increase the overall health and
well-being of the community. By
offering free biometric screenings
in the community, the Wellness
staff establishes a baseline for each
individual to become aware of his/
her current health status and establish
goals for improving health through
exercise, nutrition and other healthy habits. Grant funding provided Wellness staff
with certification training to meet the program’s growth and sustainability goals.
New Treatment Improves
Swallowing Difficulties
Grant funds also provided training
for speech therapists to help patients
restore and strengthen their swallowing
muscles and improve their quality of
life.
Managing Concussions in Area Athletes
Rice Rehabilitation is able to provide
area schools and student athletes with
concussion management services free of
charge. The ImPACT program is a tool used
to determine when it’s safe for a student
athlete to return to sports following a brain
injury. The computerized testing measures
student brain function prior to sports
activity, so that a baseline is established
for reference should a sports injury occur
at a later date. The program has been
funded through gifts and grants since it began in 2008, and continues to be funded
by Rice Health Foundation, the Earl B Olson Endowment, and the American Family
Insurance Endowment.
Mentoring Nurses
Grant funds from the Hans Dahl Education
Endowment enable Rice Memorial Hospital
to provide a mentor to each new registered
nurse as he or she begins work. This
program allows more experienced RNs
to guide new nurses as they transition to
work in the complex, technical hospital
environment. Mentoring strengthens the
nursing workforce and in turn, improves
the quality of care for patients.
11
Increasing Behavioral Health Services: Meeting the Demand
In 2014, Rice Hospital Board of Directors approved a
$1.6 million renovation and expansion of its 8-bed inpatient
behavioral health unit to a 12-bed unit. The focus of the
project is to increase access to inpatient mental health
services by increasing the ability to admit, evaluate, and
treat more patients in crisis.
Proceeds from the 2014 Holiday Festival will support this
expansion with enhanced therapy services and increased
suicide prevention measures. This project will have a major
impact on the lives of people affected by mental illness —
patients, and the people who love them.
“
Rice Hospital definitely needs
these four additional beds that
we’re going to build. There is
such a long waiting period in
the Emergency Room now,
and people come here
expecting to get help locally
and often have to be moved
to other facilities — even up to
hundreds of miles away. This
addition will definitely serve
them better by being able to
help them right here at Rice.”
Dr. Daniel Scott
Psychiatrist

Mr. C. Howard Peterson (seated) and Family: Barbara, Emily, Jane, Ross and Ann
“
It made a world of difference for all of us when Mom
learned about the Rice Hospice Program and chose
Hospice for herself. It has been almost two years since she
passed away, but we continue to appreciate the palliative
care that she received. We also continue to designate gifts
to support the program so that Hospice can be a blessing
to other families as well.”

Thermometers were purchased with a grant from the Caring for Children Endowment. We show
parents how to correctly take their baby’s temperature, and they get to take the thermometer home
with them. What an essential addition to their infant supplies that they now don’t need to worry about
purchasing themselves.”

“
Rice Hospice has been able to
provide excellent care, including
multiple complimentary therapies,
to patients and families for
over 30 years. This has been
possible with memorial gifts and
donations from families served
by the program and individuals
in the communities we serve. We have
patients and family members who have benefited
from massage therapy and healing touch instead of
using pharmaceutical interventions. Gifts also make it
possible for a hospice musician to provide one-on-one
music therapy for our patients and families, helping
the patient engage and relax.”

“
There are patients referred to Cardiac Rehab that cannot
afford the cost of their co-pays or insurance deductibles.
Charitable gifts allow the CVHR department to offer
scholarships that lessen the financial burden of
attending 2-3 times weekly rehabilitation. Without the
availability of scholarship dollars, these patients
would not be able to attend rehab and begin the
process of recovery.”

A weighted blanket can calm and organize the nervous system through the
deep pressure it provides. Gifts to the Foundation’s Rice
Institute Fund are used to purchase the materials needed
and to have the blankets made. We were able to give
36 patients weighted blankets last year. A common patient
response to the use of the blanket is, ‘It feels like a hug’.”

With Foundation grants, I have had the opportunity to complete continuing education in the LSVT BIG
treatment approach to improve the mobility and function of people with Parkinson Disease. It has been so
impactful for patients with improvements such as getting in and out of bed independently and being able
to walk up to receive communion at church with better balance and confidence. It really can change a
patient’s life in a very big way.”

“
Having a cancer diagnosis presents a very stressful time for a patient. Our goal at the cancer center
is to provide the very best care and donations to the Cancer Care Fund help us do that. These funds
make it possible for us to purchase items that help our patients — wigs and head
coverings for patients who lose their hair, gas cards to help with the expense of
driving long distances to radiation every day, and a variety of books for our patient
reference library. Donations have also allowed us to purchase a blanket warmer for
our radiation therapy area, a vein finder to make IV starts easier, and the Well Bell
to acknowledge the completion of cancer treatment. All of these things enhance
the patient experience at the Willmar Regional Cancer Center and we are grateful
for gifts to the Foundation’s Cancer Care Fund.”
