with publication resuming on January 8, 2007. Regular
publication of Country Aircheck Today will cease
with the Thursday, December 21 issue, and resume on
Thursday, January 4.
Honorable mention at No. 21 is WIVK/Knoxville, TN
(Citadel), which is in Market 71 and boasts 9,600 AQH
persons, good for No. 1 in Knoxville.
Hodges Climbs Capitol Hill
Capitol/Nashville Sr. Dir./National
Promotion Steve Hodges has been named
VP/Promotion for the label, reporting to Sr.
VP Jimmy Harnen. The move, first tipped
in the October 5 Country Aircheck Today
and confirmed in a Breaking News email
this morning (11/13), comes in advance of
the long-rumored second imprint Capitol is
expected to launch.
“Steve’s my promotion partner, my friend and one of
the smartest executives I have ever had the pleasure of
working with,” Harnen says. “He gives 110% all of the
time. There could be nothing more fitting or make me
happier than this very well deserved promotion.”

Nick Pellegrino, Kerry Bay, Heather Bay and

Whither Clear Channel?
Two private equity groups were expected to make
bids for Clear Channel Communications on Monday.
One consortium consists of Providence Equity Partners,
Blackstone and KKR while the other has Bain Capital,
Thomas H. Lee Partners and Texas Pacific Group as
partners.
While not professing to understand what it all means
and how it might eventually play out, it is interesting to
Country Aircheck that Blackstone, KKR and Thomas
H. Lee Partners are among the six private equity groups
that recently combined to purchase VNU. Included in
that group’s vast global holdings are Billboard, R&R,
Soundscan and BDS.
VNU was sold for about $9 billion in cash while CC’s
value is estimated at $17 billion.
Borat Goes Country In Roanoke
The radio banner (pictured) you’re seeing in the
movie trailers and in the new film Borat belongs to
WSLC (94.9 Star Country)/Roanoke, VA. Its 15 seconds
of fame come during a scene where Borat begins to sing
the National Anthem and then addresses the crowd. Those

familiar with Borat -- comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s
offbeat fictional character from Kazakhstan -- and the
whole bit probably won’t be surprised to learn that neither
the folks at WSLC nor the rodeo knew they were part of a
major motion picture. The rodeo was a real event, and Borat
was portrayed to the organizers as a real person.
WSLC APD/MD/morning co-host Robynn Jaymes
told Country Aircheck, “Borat came to [a local] rodeo
last year in-character as a dude who was touring the States
doing a documentary. We didn’t have much to do with it,
but the rodeo folks told us they were told Borat’s life-long
desire was to sing the National Anthem in the USA.
“So Brett (PD/morning co-host Brett Sharp) and I did
our ‘Hey y’all glad you’re here, welcome to the rodeo’ - and then here comes Borat.
(Yeah, we are idiots -- we
didn’t recognize him). I guess
it was the point where he
said ‘May George W. Bush
drink the blood of all the
men, women and children of
Iraq’ that we knew we were
in trouble. Brett was telling
the sound guy to pull the
plug, but he just froze. So
Borat gets through the entire

monologue and the whole place is ready to riot. It really
got very ugly.”
Jaymes said that even by the time Borat left the stage,
they weren’t 100% sure what had happened. “By the end
it was pretty obvious we had been had,” she said. “We
searched the net that night and learned all about Borat and
figured it was likely going to be on the big screen.
“We never signed any waivers; just the rodeo folks
did. The fellow who brings the rodeo to town every year
seals a deal with a handshake. He was clueless as to the
real intentions of the crew. Brett’s disappointed that they
don’t actually show us in the movie. I’m relieved, though.
I was on stage swearing ‘what the #@!@ is going on
here?!!’ and my mother wouldn’t have appreciated that.”
CRS-38 Studies Hispanics;
Bon Jovi Keynotes
CRB and Edison Media Research are collaborating on the
first-ever study of Hispanic Americans and their relationship to
country, to be presented during CRS-38. The study will focus
on Census statistics and Arbitron data, as well as an original
nationally-sampled survey of Hispanic Americans aged 12-49.
The new study will not supplant a third installment in the P1
study that has been presented at the last two seminars.
The keynote speaker for CRS-38 will be Jon Bon Jovi,
who will be interviewed by WSIX/Nashville morning host
Gerry House on CRS Thursday, March 1 at 10am. Says House,
“If there is ever a time you want to be invisible on stage, always
do it beside Jon Bon Jovi. I could be naked and no one will
notice.”
Early Bird registration for CRS-38 ends Nov. 30, with the rate

special and DVD titled Mr. Right Now that will air on local
PBS affiliate WQED and NBC station WPXZ on Nov. 17.

Tracy Lawrence seems to be in a “feeding frenzy”
these days. Last week, an RV carrying KAJA/San Antonio
PD/morning co-host Clayton Allen, his partner Randy
Carroll, Promotion Director Marc Mujica and their
driver Tom Bounds found TL’s house on its way to Texas.
Lawrence cooked the guys breakfast and played ‘em some
tunes before they headed out.
