39 Years of Art!
Back In 1976, when Ric Campman and Barbara Merfeld Campman
founded River Gallery School, there were after-school art classes for
children. Now the non-profit school annually serves more than 300
adults and children from age 3 to senior citizens. There is an an active
Outreach program and collaborations with other area organizations.
The underlying philosophy of the teaching - that each person is innately
creative and that creativity, when nurtured, will find unique and valuable
expression - forms the basis of the classes. Each person, from absolute
beginner to experienced artist, is accepted as they are, and the dialogue
between student and teacher around art making develops from there.
Our studios at 32 Main Street are full of artistic activity, buzzing with
day and evening classes and weekend workshops filled with all sorts of
creative expression.
The spirit of creativity and the joy of making infuses the space.Year after
year, people tell us “it’s a great place to be.”
River Gallery School offers:

Unique Programs
at River Gallery School:
Sequencing
This approach to painting was developed at RGS by co-founder Ric
Campman. It’s a way for both beginners and more experienced art
makers to enter the process of painting at a deep and direct level.
RGS offers a yearly workshop in Teacher Training in Sequencing.
RGS Outreach
Marilyn Allen, director of Outreach, and Helen Schmidt offer weekly
classes at the Brattleboro Senior Center and other venues for seniors interested in the pleasure of oil painting, whether for the first
time or resuming an interest from an earlier time in life. A generous
grant from The Robin Foundation is allowing new collaborations and
expansion of our Outreach program.
Ability Arts
This arts program offers creative classes and workshops for young
adults with various disabilities. Robyn and Greg Weisel conceived of
AArts as a way for young people to continue their creative endeavors after they finish their academic programs.
Summer and Vacation Art Camps
Your child can enjoy a week of drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture
and more. No video games! Snacks provided to nourish the young
artist. Choose any or all of the 7 weeks in July and August. Generous
grant from The Thomas Thompson Trust, The Kahn-Mason Foundation
and Turrell Fund help support all of our children’s programming.

What people say about RGS:
“As soon as I get to the bottom
of the RGS stairs, I feel it. It’s like
I leave the heavy suitcases at the
bottom, and by the time I get to
the top, it’s just me. It’s a little
oasis in my life; it’s just me, and
I love it.” - adult student
“I have referred many teenagers to art programs at the
school. The staff and curriculum are incredibly creative and
supportive to even the most
disturbed children. The teens I
have sent to the school have
benefited tremendously from
creative expression, improved
self-esteem and warm social
relationships in a safe environment.” - referring social worker
“My son had a really great
experience there this summer.
As an older kid with Autism,
he struggles socially, mentally,
kinesthetically. But RGS summer Art Camp was comforting,
interesting, and challenging
for him...he has gone back
to school more social and
more willing to try new things.
Thank you very very much for
creating the space for him, and
letting him spread his wings a
bit.” - parent of summer camp child
“Art class at RGS is a lifeline for me. It gives
me a safe haven to focus on being creative in
a caring and supportive environment. I start
making a piece and completely lose myself in
it – the troubles of life fall drop away – and
somehow by following the brush marks and
paint colors something emerges that is deeply
personal and fulfilling. ” - adult student
