america
the
beautiful
word from
your executive
director
As I spent some time thinking about
our community, I was impressed with
several things that make it very special:
“AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL” IS AN
AMERICAN PATRIOTIC SONG.
Late afternoon on the Arkansas
River in Canon City, Colo.
The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee
Bates and the music was composed by church
organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward.
Have you ever thought about the words to this beautiful song? “O beautiful for
spacious skies, amber waves of grain, purple mountains majesty, fruited plains and
alabaster cities, from sea to shining sea”? Or how about the lyrics from “This Land
Is Your Land” — “redwood forests to the gulf stream waters, sparkling sands, wheat
fields waving”?
During the month of July we will celebrate the patriotism and beauty that
is America.
THIS MONTH’S silver
star
MAYBE NOT SILVER, BUT
DEFINITELY SHINING
Ready, Set, Deal!
This month’s Silver Star is not a resident
of the Legacy but he is a life-long
member of the Legacy family. Don
Anderson and his wife, Gretchen, moved
to Sun City West to take care of his
mother, Marge Anderson, who was a
resident at the Legacy. Don and Gretchen
were highly involved in the life of the
Legacy and made many friends among it’s
residents and staff. Don, along with the
help of his wife, took over the dealing of
the blackjack and poker games. Needless
to say, he was one of the most popular
people to walk in the door on Tuesdays
and Thursdays.
We lost Gretchen to cancer in August of 2013 and Marge went to her celestial home a
few months later. Don took a few months off from card dealing, but has since returned to
deal blackjack on Tuesday afternoons. When we needed a new game table, Don donated
a custom made one in honor of his beautiful Gretchen. The residents love him and enjoy
having him as part of their family. Don truly is a “shining star” at the Legacy.
• A quality staff that loves serving
our residents every day and making
sure that their needs are met.
• A food service department that
delivers some of the finest meals
available in any senior community.
The variety and quality of our
menus have been recognized in our
community and by our corporate
staff as being among the finest in
the company.
• A beautiful community that is
elegant, yet not overstated. Our
residents are comfortable in their
surroundings.

EVENT RECAP
it’s all about the horse
THE HIGHLIGHT OF MAY
WAS THE VISITATION BY
GARY SPRAGUE, ARIZONA’S
SINGING COWBOY, AND HIS
HORSE, DUSTY.
The weather was threatening
rain and wind so we moved
the program indoors. But not
to fear, Gary and Dusty will
perform nearly anywhere.
Luckily our lobby has really
high ceilings so Gary can sit
astride Dusty and still have
“Are you sure it’s okay?”
room for his hat. All the
residents and staff enjoyed the
program and each was treated
to an opportunity to be up close and personal with Dusty. As Gary has told me on many
occasions, “They don’t come to see or hear me; they come to see Dusty.”
IT’S OUR PLEASURE TO SERVE YOU ...
word from your executive director
(continued)
• Our company, Senior Lifestyle
Corporation, is a 29-year-old,
privately-held, family-owned company.
In this day and age, it is nice to work
for a stable and innovative company
that is well respected in our industry.
Congratulations, Darlene
THIS MONTH’S
chart hero
CARING, HONESTY, APPRECIATION,
RESPECT, TEAMWORK
She is a beautiful person inside and out.
She truly embodies the CHART Hero
values each and every day. She is an
asset to the community and to SLC as
a whole. She makes a difference in the
lives of those she serves. These accolades
came directly from Karen Ashfield,
supervisor of our CHART Hero
recipient for June 2015, DARLENE
FLEMING. Darlene has been a Sales
Counselor for the Tradition/Legacy for
a total of six years.
Darlene was born in Quantico, Va., and
raised in North and South Carolina.
She proudly states her father was a
Marine. She has lived in Arizona 49
years. She and her husband, Bill, have a
combined family of five daughters and
a Chihuahua named Caesar.
In her spare time Darlene, Bill and
Caesar hit the road on their motorcycle.
Bill drives with Caesar in a backpack
on his back and Darlene in the back
passenger seat. Sounds cozy!
• The Heritage Legacy, our assisted
living community, is recognized not
only for its incredible beauty, but
even more so for the professional care
we provide. We also have GE Quiet
Care, an innovative system that gives
us additional monitoring, allowing us
to be even more responsive when the
need arises.
• A community of residents who are active, involved and care deeply about
keeping our community the special place it is.
I hope you take some time each day to be thankful for your blessings.
Darlene enjoys meeting people and
showing them how wonderful lifestyle
community living is. It changes lives.
“Working in this industry for over-20
years has never been about having a job.
Each resident I have met has enriched
my life and made me who I am and
I thank you.” Feeling humbled and
honored expresses how Darlene felt
when told she would receive this award.
