Memorial Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to honor Shawn and Dinah
Bergstrom and to give financial support for higher education to
Lutheran Youth of North Seattle (LYONS) youth and their families.
Applicants for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

Must be an active LYONS high school senior or formerly-active LYONS alumni.
•
Must be applying with anticipated enrollment into an accredited college, university, community
college, or vocational/technical school (scholarship is dependent upon enrollment).
•
Must not have been awarded a scholarship for more than three years previously.
To apply, please attach the following to your application form:
1. Essay: Please write a personal essay reflecting on your life’s journey. What course of study
will you pursue in your education, and why? What do you value and hope to achieve? And
what role has your faith, and your experience with LYONS, played in shaping your life? You
might choose to reflect on challenges to your faith and learning as well as on accomplishments
or defining moments. While there is no “right answer” to this essay, the committee is
interested in your reflections on how your faith and education has shaped who you have
become.
The essay should be about 500 words, typed, and double-spaced. Please see the
attached rubric for guidance.
2. Reference Letter: Attach a letter of recommendation with your application. This letter should
be from someone outside your family who knows you and your potential - a teacher, employer,
pastor, etc. Letters cannot be solicited from LYONS staff or from members of the Scholarship
Committee. If your reference prefers to submit his or her letter directly, it may be sent to the
scholarship committee at the LYONS office address or emailed to
[email protected].
3. Transcript: Your most recent school transcript must be enclosed with your application
(photocopies acceptable)
4. Resume (see page 2 for details).
Scholarships may be awarded in tiered amounts and will be reviewed using the attached rubric. The
total scholarship award amount will be based on the overall score for the application; please note that
incomplete applications will receive a lower score.
DEADLINE: Applications must be received by April 15th, 2015 (postmarks accepted)
