14th Annual Rocky Point Triathlon at Las Palomas
BROUGHT TO YOU BY HUMAN MOVEMENT MANAGEMENT, UNDER ARMOUR, AND RACELAB
Hola Triathletes!
Our favorite event of the year is almost here…Rocky Point Tri!!
Not only has this race been named the “Best Post Race Party in Triathlon” by
Triathlete Magazine, but this event has one of the most incredible histories in all
of triathlon! We’re so excited to be bringing you the 14th Edition of this Historic
Event!
Puerto Penasco (or Rocky Point for all you Gringo’s) is a very special place for our
team. Besides the beautiful landscape, the wonderful people in town and the great
support we receive from the local community; it is a great opportunity for us to
support great charities of Sonora. This event benefits Proteccion Civil and the D.I.F.
who will both be on site the whole weekend. We would also like to thank Under
Armour, the full staff at Human Movement, The Puerto Penasco Government and
Gus and Bettina from Racelab for making this event possible.
In this athlete guide, you will get a quick run down of the courses and schedule of
events. Since we’re all family here, if you have any questions about the website or the
Athlete Guide, please call (603) 557-7994 or email [email protected]
even when you are in Rocky Point…or just stop by our condo at Las Palomas…it’ll be
the one with kayaks, race bibs and beer on the porch… We’ll be happy to help!
We encourage everyone to pick up his or her race packet on Friday night at our
Packet Pick-Up at Las Palomas Resort. This will allow athletes to have more time
to prepare for the event on Saturday morning. Athletes are also welcome to join
our (FREE!!) Sunset Yoga session on Friday night as well. On site registration is
available Friday night and Saturday morning for the procrastinators. UPDATE: First
Wave Will Start at 8:30 AM.
Please keep reading for more details!
Here’s to a great weekend of racing and spending time with friends on the beach!

238 towards Mobile (also known as Dead Cow Road)
4. SR 238 will end at a STOP sign. Turn left at the STOP
sign and it will put you into Gila Bend.

Turn right at the sign just before the McDonalds for
Mexico/ SR 85 South.
6. Take SR 85 South to Ajo (39 miles)
7. Continue on SR 85 South to Why, AZ (10 miles)
8. Continue on SR 85 South to Lukeville, AZ (27 miles)
9. Lukeville is the border between USA and Mexico. Once
you cross the border, you will be in Sonotya, Mexico. At
this time, distances change from miles
to kilometers.
10.Continue on the main road for approximately 1.8 miles.
You will arrive at a 2-way intersection with a stop sign.
At this time, you will see a monument and signs for PTO
Penasco and Santa Ana to the left. Make a left at the stop
sign and then bear right, follow the signs to PTO Penasco.
11.Stay to the right towards Puerto Penasco/Caborca and the
Y on the road. There is a traffic light soon after you bear
right. Continue straight through this traffic light to Mexico
Highway 8.
12.Once you have gone through Sonoyya, continue on
Highway 8 from Sonotya to Puerto Penasco (60 miles).
Along the way, there is a sign that says El PTO Penasco.
DO NOT TURN at this sign. It is in the middle of the desert!
Continue on Highway 8 until you see the sign for your
appropriate resort. For all Sandy Beach Resorts (Sonoran
Sea, Princesa, Las Palomas, Las Palmas, Bella Sirena,
Sonoran Spa, Sonoran Sun, Esmerelda, Casa Blance), you
will turn at the first light when you reach town. This light
will have signs for Sandy Beach Resorts and it is named
Blvd. Samuel Ocana.
13.If you turn to go to Sandy Beach Resorts, continue on
Samual Ocana past the railroad tracks. You will reach a
round-about with a Circle K. Continue on the road and
head towards the resorts on the horizon through the
arches at Costa Diamante.
FROM TUSCON
Valencia Road is the largest major street in Tucscon that then
becomes State Highway 86- head West. You can also use Ajo
Way or I-19 (Ajo Exit)- both heading West. Once on Highway
86, continue West through Sells and Quijotoa (these towns
are on the Papago Indian Reservation- Tohono O’Odham) to
the town of Why. At Why, turn left onto State Highway 85
South. Follow Highway 85 South to Lukeville, Arizona at the
Mexican border. For information on the border crossing, see
our Customs information page.
Just over the U.S./Mexican border is the Mexican town of
Sonoita. Stay to the right and there will be signs which direct
you through town to Puerto Penasco. They will place you on
the Mexican Route 8 and an almost straight run to Puerto
Penasco, commonly known as Rocky Point. There are a few
sharp turns so stay alert and preferably drive only during the
daytime.
FROM SAN DIEGO

Get Mexican
Auto Insurance
It’s a real thing. It’s super cheap and will save you a ton
of hassle if you are unlucky and get into an accident.
RACE DAY PARKING INFO
Athletes who are not staying at Las Palomas, please
follow the instructions of the Parking Officials who will
be onsite directing traffic. Spectators and participants
will be parking at the “Sales Office” lot and/or the “Golf
Course” lot for both Packet Pick up on Friday night and
for the race on Saturday morning. It will be EXREMELY
difficult, if not impossible, to get your car out while the
bike course is open. Please don’t try. Go have a free
Tecate on us! If it is an emergency, please contact a
race official for help.
BORDER SAFETY
AND OTHER
RANDOM FACTS
U.S. citizens returning from Mexico must present a
passport or passport card to enter the United States.
Children 15 and younger can cross with a U.S. birth
certificate or naturalization certificate. DO NOT TRY TO
BRING FIRE ARMS OR AMMO!! That will land you in
jail for sure!!
With some frequency, the US State Department issues
travel advisories warning about increase violence along
the border. The city of Puerto Peñasco is in northern
Mexico. But the town has not seen the rolling gun
attacks seen in the border towns of Juarez, Nogales and
Tijuana. Safety concerns in the beachside resort town
are at a “far lesser degree” than the aforementioned
trouble spots, said Arizona Attorney General Terry
Goddard late last year. The facts and statistics show that
since 2008 there have been four gun related deaths
among the police, but no tourist casualties. Mexican
authorities heavily patrol the highway to Rocky Point
knowing that the community needs tourists to continue
to thrive.
There are thousands of Americans that visit Rocky Point
on a regular basis… It is very, very rare to hear them
complaining about safety or crime issues.
Some perspective: every Christmas in Britain about 700
people go to hospital for treatment to injuries inflicted
while opening their gifts (knives slip, scissors go too far
etc). There are 60 million British people. 20 Million
people visit Mexico each year. So far (and not to take
away from the tragedy and seriousness of it) only a
handful of innocent tourists have been caught in the
unfortunate criminal shootings… That means you are 4
times more likely to be injured by your own Christmas
present in Britain than by a Mexican thug. Just saying.
The water is safe to use when cooking, showering and
brushing your teeth. It is probably also safe to drink but
stick with bottled water to be safe.
We also HIGHLY recommend that you purchase Mexican
Auto Insurance before you cross the border. It can and
will save you a lot of hassle!
TRI GEEK
INFORMATION
Ok Tri Geeks (we can say that because we are one), this
is a little different than our hard core, draft until you’re
caught, triathlon. Rocky Point is more of a celebration
than a race. Yes, we will have accurate courses, chip
timing, awards and all the goodies you expect from a
triathlon, but the spirit is much more relaxed.
Transition opens at 6:00am on Saturday morning. It
is totally secure, but you are still responsible for your
belongings- aka - don’t throw your wetsuit three bike
racks over as you’re racing to get on your helmet and
claim it was stolen. If anyone is going that fast in
transition, we may ask you to slow down.
The bike course is “secure” but not completely closed.
Please be aware of traffic and be courteous to everyone
- fellow triathletes, cars, workers, and volunteers.
The run course is on a closed golf course. The weather
looks like it will be amazing, possibly even warm. If you
require more water than the aid stations can provide, we
recommend running with a camelback or a water bottle.
PLEASE DON’T LITTER. The golf course is so kind to
let use their course to run on it, so let’s leave it better
than how we found it. The water will be 100% purified
bottled water put into disposable cups.
Please don’t take your bike out of transition before
EVERYONE has gone out on the run. It’s simply not nice
or fair to those who are still “racing”. No exceptions.
Also, you will need your bib number or your body marking
to get your bike out of transition. Again, no exceptions.
Please have all equipment out of the transition area no
later than 12:00pm, as we will not be responsible for it
after that time. We recommend securing all of your gear
before you start celebrating the day.
FREQUENTLY
ASKED
QUESTIONS
What do I need to cross US / Mexico border?
Where will parking be located?
Where do I pick up my race packet?
How many aid stations will there be on course?
Crossing the border into Mexico should not be a problem.
For re-entry back into the US, make sure to bring proper
documentation, such as a valid passport.
Packet pickup will be setup next to the pool of Last Palomas
Resort (Phase 1) on Friday April 24th from 5pm-8pm.
Athletes will need to show your picture ID in order to pickup
your packet and shirt. You can pickup your friend’s packets if
you have their ID.
What else do we need to bring?
We are asking that participants bring donations to the event
that Rocky Point Triathlon will donate to local schools and
kids in need. Any sporting goods (basketballs, soccer balls,
etc.) as well as any other items (clothing, shoes) you think
would be beneficial would be greatly appreciated! Please do
not bring any perishable items such as food. G to We will
have a drop off location located near registration – so just
bring your items with you when you pick up your race packet
and we will take care of the rest!
Are there special lodging rates for participants?
We’re so glad you asked! Yes – there is. Either go online or
call Las Palomas Resort – and use the following Group ID:
TRIA15 and Password tri15. If you have already reserved
a room without using the code – call the Reservations
Department, tell them you’re part of Rocky Point Triathlon,
and they will update your room reservation.
Is the race timed?
Our friends at Gemini Timing will be timing all races.
Athletes will pick up their timing chips during packet pick
up. This race has selected the Multi-Sport Tag Timing
System. Your timing chip and strap should be attached to
your left ankle. You must wear a timing chip to receive your
time. Timing chips will be collected as soon as you cross the
finish line. Timing chips must be returned. If they are not, an
$85 replacement fee will be charged to the athlete.
Where are the bathrooms?
Bathrooms are located throughout the Las Palomas Resort.
Please be patient and courteous to your fellow participates.
Athletes and guests will be permitted to use the resort
parking lots race weekend. Resort staff will be directing
parking at the entrance gate.
There will be no aid station on the bike course so athletes are
responsible for being their own hydration. On the run course,
there will be 2 aid stations. Aid stations will be stocked with
bottle water and ice.
How will the courses be marked?
The bike and run course will be marked with blue and yellow
duct tape. Athletes will follow the color tape that matches
their race bib. Olympic Triathlon and 10K participates will
follow the blue tape. Sprint Triathlon and 5K participates will
follow the yellow tape. There will also be mile markers along
the courses.
Will wetsuits be allowed?
As this not a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, there are no set
regulations on when a wetsuit can or cannot be used. It is up
to race director to make this call the day before the race. We
recommend not wearing a wetsuit if water temperatures are
higher than 85 degrees.
Will there be bike technicians on hand?
Tribe Multisports will be available the day before and race
day to deal with any last minute tune-ups. They will also be
operating a “stag” vehicle on the bike course.
Will there be food for athlete’s families and
friends to purchase?
Families and friends can purchase food and drinks from the
resort.
Will beer be served?
Athletes 18 or over can celebrate your finish with FREE
Tecate beer. Other alcoholic drinks and soda will be available
for purchase from the resort bar.

IMPORTANT
INFORMATION
Other Important Information
• The Department of Familia or DIF will be on hand
collecting non-perishable food, clothing, and monetary
donations for the local community. DIF is a social
assistance branch of the government that seeks to
direct public policy regarding social assistance while
promoting the integral development of the family and
community. Remember you can not bring any type of
food, even can goods, across the border so it will have
to be purchased locally. The town of Puerto Penasco has
been so supportive in making this event is a success
year after year, we want to give back and need your help.
• Volunteers will be doing their best to remove each
athlete’s timing chip as they cross the finish line but
ultimately it is the athlete’s responsibility to make sure
their timing chip is returned. Athletes will be charged
$85 for chips not returned to Gemini Timing within one
week after the event.
• We strongly recommend that everyone consider
purchasing Mexico auto insurance before crossing the
border.
AND LASTLY, we’d like to thank Under Armour and the
Racelab Training Family, but especially Gus and Bettina.
