Volume 8, No. 3 April 2015-May 2015 ROLANDO STREET FAIR By Aimee Lee Cheek The music! The food! The vendors! The rides! The people passing by! The children googly-eyed with excitement! The spectacle! The Rolando Street Fair is a-comin'! Sunday, March 29, through the magic of a legion of community volunteers, the skills of dedicated professionals and the fun-loving folks of Rolando, the length of lovely Rolando Blvd. will be transformed into a lively performance space and bazaar worthy of Robin Hood's England or the Arabian Nights. The fair opens at 10:00 AM and folds its tent at 6:00 PM, giving everyone time to sample everything! Where to start? Booths line both sides of the street and invite investigation. Tempting aromas waft by. Is that roasted corn? Little bit sleepy still? Oh, hey, Sister Speak's edgy Americana/Alternative vibe takes the stage at 10:30 a.m. We'll wake up! Munch, too, why not? A delicious something from the sausage guys or StrictlyVegan? Maybe funnel cake? Choices, choices! Len Rainey and the Midnight Players bring on the blues at 12 o'clock. That's 12 noon, not midnight, but who's counting? We've just time now to look for that birthday or graduation gift. A lot of these vendors we remember. Nice stuff. Probably we should go over and say hi. Those earrings! Look, this skirt. With the blouse, perfection. See over there, the silhouette vendor is Continued on page 2 Rolando Events RCC Meetings at Henry Clay Elementary School (6406 Solita) | 6:30PM social time, 7:00PM meeting Tentative topics (check RolandoCC.org for updates): Tuesday, April 21: South Campus Plaza | Preview of new SDSU shopping center Tuesday, May 19: Real estate scene in Rolando | Organized by Doug Lister Sunday March 29: 19th Annual Rolando Street Fair! Need an excuse to stock up? Remember you're not buying only for yourself but also for your community. Hey, it's important to encourage these folks to come back next year. Pascha Gerlinger, who lives a few blocks away, coordinates all the vendors; can you believe it? She's the one introducing herself to the new vendors and getting hugs from those who've been here before. About 1:30 p.m., time for the Trey Tosh Band with Rock and Soul. Not roll. Listen and lunch? Check out Awesum Dimsum, Rita's on Wheels, or if we're ready for red meat, how about Hunter Steak House? Still full of funnel cake? We could come back later and bring home a tasty something for supper. Vegetables from Farm Fresh to You, so fresh they last for days! Better buy some of that terrific jalapeno jelly from Jelly Bear Company. A couple of jars, so you won't run out. Already 3:30? The Devastators are on with kinky Reggae. Shall we "Simmer Down?" Oh, yum, kettle corn and homemade soda. Have you tried our vendor’s sarsaparilla? Whoosh! There's Don Mullen zipping around on rollerblades. You know he comes all the way from Pacific Beach to help manage the vendor area, making sure everyone is happy and safe. And Doug Lister — that neighborhood guy with the nice smile over there has been helping out for 15 years, rounding up volunteers and taking on just about every job that comes up! No wonder he received RCC’s Doris Perry Community Service Award in 2011. Can you believe it? It's 5 o'clock and The Earful bring the Funk to our earholes! Wow, who found all these great musicians? That would be our neighbor Stephanie Bonner. Each year she scouts out talent, whether from near or far, to bring us the right bands, the right sounds, and the right mix of musical styles. She even secures the stage, sound engineer, and when needed rallies the sponsorship of Best Western Lamplighter & Suites to host a traveling band. How in the world can little Rolando put on a show like this? Let's go by Councilmember Marti Emerald's booth to thank her for the financial and staff support her office extends to us. Then there's the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, which annually helps out with funding through the Creative Communities grant. The College Area Business District (BID) assisted with supplies and staffing, while Jim Schneider, new Executive Director, helped connect us with discounted suppliers and advertising. www.RolandoCC.org And the Band Played On – Last year’s fairgoers listened to the music from the Street Fair stage. (Photo: Jolyne L Harris, Photoptions) Last but hardly least, for some years now, the Rolando Community Council board has contracted with Sandi Buehner, who lives in the College Area, to organize the production and manage all required contracts and permits. She has developed a highly efficient team of volunteers. "Is it hard work for them? At times, yes," Sandi says. "It is fun, most definitely. Will they do it again? Undoubtedly! Can you participate in the fun? We'd love to have you." To sign up to volunteer next year, or help out on fair day, email [email protected] or stop by the information booth at the fair. One more thing. Last year as dusk came on, all the bands had gone, and the rides were whirling their last whirls, a curly-headed tot crouched on the edge of the sidewalk nearby with her mother, listening to the final strains of the wonderful day. Maybe she'll be back again. April-May 2015, Page 2 www.RolandoCC.org April-May 2015, Page 3 ROLANDO NIGHT OUT RENEW YOUR RCC MEMBERSHIP! The City Council recently took another step toward improving the situation by voting 8-0 to fund the repair and resurfacing of 70 miles of city streets. Many of these streets are located right here in Rolando. This is a $9 million endeavor, using Prop. 42 and 43 funds to complete the work. The list of streets to be repaired or resurfaced can be viewed through a link at www.RolandoCC.org, or at http:// bit.ly/1z7X743. Bulldozers to begin rolling in Rolando soon!
