Roncalli Catholic First Annual
Pro-Life Week October 7-11
Roncalli Catholic High School celebrated its first annual ProLife Week, October 7 -11. The week consisted of daily prayer, an
informational video, a guest speaker, a pro-life poster contest, and
cupcakes marking National Pro-Life Cupcake Day, to name a few of
the featured activities.
“Our Roncalli Catholic Pro-Life Week is a testament to the ministry
and faith that is evident at our school” said RCHS President Jeff
Dempsey. “The format of the week created an open dialog for our
students to discuss and express this aspect of our faith and our belief
in the sanctity of human life.”
On Wednesday, the school’s “Pride 4 Life” Pro-Life group
participated in the National Pro-Life Cupcake Day, serving cupcakes to
all students during their lunch hour. The day calls upon the tradition of
celebrating each year of life with a cake. The cupcakes serve as a subtle
reminder of the lives that were not celebrated. Cupcakes were baked
and donated by students and parents. For additional information on
the national campaign visit the Cupcakes for Life web site at http://
cupcakesforlife.com/.
The week concluded with a presentation by Pro-Life inspirational
speaker Jason Palmisano from Indialantic, Florida, and a Mass with
Father Chi Igboanusi presiding.

HOST FAMILIES
NEEDED!
Roncalli Catholic has once again agreed to accept
Global Outreach students next year. Host families are
necessary for these students to have the opportunity
to attend our great school. Do you have room in your home and in your heart to
take part in this life-changing experience?
As a host family, a student would live with you for
10 months while they attend Roncalli Catholic High
School and be part of your family. The student would
be like your own son or daughter and your “plus”
would be coming to know the traditions and customs
of another culture, as you share your family’s traditions
and customs with the student. To learn more, contact Sr. Marie Alice Ostry, ND

A Message f r o m o u r P r e s i d e n t
Friends of Roncalli Catholic:
Roncalli Catholic is certainly in the midst of extraordinary times! Fr. Lloyd Gnirk and I opened our
recent Annual Operating Fund letter with the same message. And, it is true! With enrollment at a 20-year high; our school’s 50th anniversary drawing near; and, the canonization
of Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli set for April 27, 2014, we are indeed in the midst of extraordinary
times and we are poised for what promises to be an extraordinary future.
Jeff Dempsey, President
Roncalli Catholic
High School
In this issue you will read of our Pride for Life student group and our Pro-Life Week activities, (p. 3);
our Homecoming Week festivities (p. 8); our second annual Vocations Awareness Day (p.13); our
Fall play “Rumors” (p. 14); and our 14th annual High Tea (p. 10). These activities, and so many
others noted in this issue, highlight the students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and other volunteers
who make Roncalli Catholic such a vibrant, extraordinary family.
As our principal, Paul Hans, outlines in his first Pride Magazine message, we have been engaged
over the past several months in a great deal of data gathering and conversation regarding our vision
for Roncalli Catholic’s future. With a strong academic core and a college preparatory curriculum
firmly in place, we are developing an even clearer vision for our future, which includes a great
number of additional course offerings and other life-prep opportunities for our students. This vision
will continue to evolve, but it will surely continue to embrace our mission of educating our students
to meet the opportunities and challenges of life with wisdom, courage and faith. Please see Paul’s
message on page 7.
This Pride Magazine issue also serves as our Annual Report of financial activity for the 20122013 fiscal year. I am pleased to report we continue to post positive financial balance sheets, as
we continue make campus improvements and enhancements to our curriculum. Our continued
financial strength is thanks to a number of factors, including increased tuition revenue due to our
growing enrollment, increases in annual gifts and fundraising event support, along with continued
careful spending policies.
Beginning on page 21, you will find a listing of the many donors who gave so generously during the
last fiscal year. Generous private support enables us to offer our students the best education possible
and one that is financially accessible to all. Please consider joining me in making a year-end gift to
our Annual Operating Fund effort. Simply click here to visit our secure website which will allow
you to make a gift to us via PayPal. Thank you again for your continued support and interest in our extraordinary school.
Merry Christmas and God bless,
Jeff Dempsey

A Message f r o m o u r P r i n c i p a l
Greetings Parents, Students, and Alumni:
There are only 95 school days until seniors walk down graduation aisle, 103 days until all others move one
huge step closer to that inevitable goal. While RCHS staff are working hard to maintain the academic
focus on this year (Yes, “Senioritis” cases are beginning to pop up), it’s hard not to get excited about the
future opportunities that lie before all of our RCHS students.
Paul Hans, Principal
Roncalli Catholic
High School
We are almost a semester into the school year, and I have never been as excited about our future as I am
right now. After survey data-gathering and conversation (formal and informal) with students, parents,
alumni, and staff, it’s time to take advantage of our positive momentum by developing additional academic
programs, clubs, and organizations that will further enhance the interest and future opportunities for
RCHS students. RCHS is in the midst of developing a vision for the future that will enable students to strengthen
their academic success through the implementation of career academies. These academies will allow
students to apply their academic knowledge by engaging in real-life, hands-on, relevant experiences that
strengthen 21st Century skills for success. Even though we focus on success in course subject areas (math,
language arts, science, social studies, and religion), it does not mean our students will grow up to become a
core subject area. They will, however, apply those skills toward a yet-to-be-discovered passion or career
interest. Academies will enhance, not replace, the academic college prep experience and strengthen the
transitional bridge from high school to college to life.
Click here to view Academies chart
The vision for the future includes the following academies: (1) S.T.E.A.M. (Science-TechnologyEngineering-Art-Math) Academy, (2) Health Systems Academy, (3) Business & Entrepreneurship
Academy, (4) Culinary & Hospitality Academy, and (5) a Catholic Leadership Academy. Partnership with
local colleges and universities as well as business and industry organizations will be the key to the success of
these academies, as that is where our students will be spending time during their senior year. Teachers will
begin reviewing academic standards to develop relevant connections between core academic standards and
career-related fields of study.
There are many advantages to tying academics to career exploration. • Career academies create life-prep experiences that allow students to have relevant conversations with
parents and staff about success beyond high school, not just success FOR high school. • Colleges are more likely to recruit academy students because they’ve already identified a specific path/
passion other than “undecided”. Determining a possible path for the future in high school is much
less expensive than exploring options in college. Too many students end up “taking a year off” only
to struggle getting back on the college track. • Employers want academy students because they’ve had more exposure and experience with the “real
life” skills necessary for employment (e.g. problem solving, work ethic, getting along with others,
etc.). • Academies have been implemented in OPS, PLV, Millard, LPS, and Grand Island, and continue to
grow. Roncalli Catholic High School would be the first Catholic high school in the Omaha Metro
area to adopt this learning model.
In closing, the future is, indeed, bright for the RCHS family of students, parents, alumni, and staff. If we
continue to focus on preparing our kids for the world they will live in, rather than the world we came from,
the RCHS legacy of greatness will continue!
Sincerely,

Principal Roncalli Catholic High School

RECORD-BREAKING ATTENDANCE AT HIGH TEA
Continued from page 8
Click here to go to first page of this story
“There is a great sense of optimism here at Roncalli Catholic
as we prepare to celebrate our 50th year. This, along with
Brother Armand being here and our great High Tea tradition,
helped increase attendance and led to the overall success of
the event.”
This year’s High Tea featured Brother Armand Alcazar, a
De LaSalle Christian Brother and former RCHS teacher,
accompanied by Sylvia Black on the piano. From 1971 to
1977, Alcazar taught Religion, Music, Psychology, and
Physical Education at the school. In 1974 he started splitting
his time between teaching and counseling at Roncalli
Catholic. He also directed the chorus and coached both the
boys and girls tennis teams. Alcazar entertained guests with
stories and serenaded them with songs from classic musicals
such as Godspell and Cats. Traditionally an all-female event,
because of Brother Armand several alumni men as well as
women attended this year.
A long-standing Roncalli Catholic tradition, High Tea raises
funds for students while inspiring creativity and fun for
participants. Each year, the school’s Rummel Gymnasium is
transformed into a giant tea room, with the table decorations
as varied as the hostesses and volunteers who decorate them.
From the beach to the campsite, and from traditional elegance
to board games, this year’s themes showed that this event truly
has something for everyone.
The traditional high tea luncheon was catered by Pleasure
Your Palate and Roncalli Catholic alumnus Ted Thomsen
(1976) and featured Cranberry Garlic Herb Chicken Salad.
Roncalli Raspberry Bars and Luscious Lemon Bars were made
by Roncalli Catholic’s Foods and Nutrition students. More
than 70 students volunteered to set-up, serve guests and cleanup following the event.

for its Fall Play
Roncalli Catholic presented Neil Simon’s play “Rumors” November 7 –
10. The performances were held in the school’s Notre Dame Auditorium,
with tickets sold at the door ($8 for adults; $5 for students).
“Rumors” features the trouble that arises when several affluent couples
gather in a posh suburban residence for a dinner party celebrating their
hosts’ tenth anniversary.
There are no servants, the hostess is missing, and the host - the deputy
mayor of New York City - has shot himself through the earlobe.
There are comic complications when, given their upper class status, the
guests decide to do everything possible to conceal the evening’s events
from the local police and the media.

Catholic Daughters Retreat
Catholic Daughters of the Americas Our Lady of Faith Court
#2604 held their annual retreat at Roncalli Catholic on November
2. The group’s Chaplain, Fr. Tom Weisbecker (Rummel 1971), led the
group in a 33-day preparation for Marian Consecration on a journey
with the great Marian saints, St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian
Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa, and Blessed John Paul
II. These beloved saints will teach the group the secrets
to drawing closer to the Heart of Jesus through the
Heart of Mary. The group used the RCHS library for
presentations, and the chapel for rosary and mass. Future Meteorologist!
Trick or Treat!
RCHS students went
“Trick or Treating” in the
Hillsborough neighborhood
on October 26. The
group collected 217 items
for Operation Others, an
organization that feeds more than 1,600 families in
the Omaha area at Christmas time.
RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS
On October 23, RCHS junior and aspiring
Meteorologist Brian Bosn had the unique
opportunity to shadow Bill Randby, anchor of the
Channel 7 News. According to Bosn, Randby
covered what to expect while achieving his dream
job, from a degree in Meteorology to on-the-job
training. Bosn also practiced doing the weather in
front of the camera; researched weather patterns,
radars and almanacs to determine their weather
prediction; and helped set up the forecast and
slideshow for the 5 p.m. broadcast.

RONCALLI CATHOLIC PRIDE | DECEMBER 2013
We remember our beloved dead
The following were enrolled in the
Roncalli Catholic Memorial Association between
October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2013
Leading the Memorial Mass procession were
Nathan Leuck, Victoria Kolala, and Gavin Lee.
Important Note to our Readers:
Each Fall, we remember all
Roncalli Catholic family members
who have passed away in the past
year at a special Memorial Mass.
Celebrated on November 1, All
Saints Day, this Mass is open to the
public.
Information for the Memorial
Association is gathered from the
newspapers, notices from staff,
friends and relatives of those
enrolled. We apologize if we have
omitted a loved one from our listing. It is our sincere
intent to include everyone.
If you enroll a loved one in the Memorial Association,
you will receive an invitation reminder of the annual
Memorial Mass.
Please know that we pray for the members of our
Memorial Association each time we gather for liturgy
at Roncalli Catholic. The names of the enrollees are
listed in a book that is available in our chapel.
