A Message f r o m o u r P r e s i d e n t
Roncalli Catholic alumni, friends and family:
It is natural to reflect as the calendar year nears an end, and in 2014 Roncalli Catholic
High School was truly blessed!
Jeff Dempsey, President
Roncalli Catholic
High School
Angelo Giuseppi Roncalli, our patron, was Canonized Pope Saint John XXIII on April 27.
More than 600 people attended our outdoor, 50th Anniversary Mass on August 3, with
many more attending the Family Festival that followed. With our highest enrollment
in two decades, 362 students joined us for the first day of classes this Fall. Our new
Gustafson Center -- a 21st Century media center -- was blessed and dedicated on
September 26. Great things are happening at Roncalli Catholic!
The continued success of our school is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of
our outstanding faculty and staff, and thanks to the many alumni and friends who have
supported our school so generously into this, our 50th year.
In this Pride Magazine you will find photos and stories about our new Gustafson Center
(page 6); Homecoming Week festivities (page 15); our students’ successes (throughout);
and our 15th annual High Tea (page 8). Our December issue also serves as our Annual Report of financial activity for the 2013-2014
fiscal year. It is my pleasure to share with you our continued positive operating results
(page 23), while we also continue to make campus improvements and enhancements to
our curriculum.
Our financial stability is thanks to the increased tuition revenue due to our growing
enrollment, increases in annual gifts and fundraising event support, along with continued
fiscally responsible spending policies.
Beginning on page 21, you will find a listing of the many donors who gave so generously
during the last fiscal year. Generous private support enables us to offer our students the
best education possible and one that is financially accessible to all. As Christmas nears, the miracle of our Savior’s birth inspires spiritual growth, gratitude
and compassionate giving. Please consider joining me in making a year-end gift to our
Annual Operating Fund, to help our school continue to inspire, nourish and grow the
faith of our young people. Simply click here to visit our secure website which will allow
you to make a gift to us via PayPal. And, always please feel free to call with questions.
Thank you again for your continued support of our great school.
Merry Christmas, Happy 2015 and God bless,
Jeffrey M. Dempsey, President

The James & Kristen Gustafson Family Center
Celebrating the Dedication and Blessing of the Technology Center on September 26
On Friday, September 26 Roncalli Catholic High School celebrated
the dedication and blessing of their Gustafson Center, a learning
and media center that will enhance how students learn and teachers
teach in the 21st Century.
Reverend Monsignor James E. Gilg, who was named the RCHS
Honorary Alumnus of the Year in May, read the dedication and
blessed the new center. Kellen Gustafson, a Senior at RCHS,
performed the official ribbon-cutting with the family standing by.
The center is 4,000 square feet of wireless and hardwired interactive
technology and collaborative work areas with a collegiate feel. It
will be used daily by students for study, tutoring sessions, group
project work and for scheduled classes. Three break-out rooms,
complete with large screen monitors and dry-erase walls, are
available to the students as well. The space also features the
school’s new Pride Café, a small business venture being run by the
new Entrepreneurial Class. The Gustafson Center was opened for
the students on September 8.
Construction of the new center was made possible by gifts from
the James & Kristen Gustafson Family Foundation, along with
donations made at the school’s annual Festa del Leone fundraiser
on April 12, and the work of the Roncalli Catholic Facilities
Committee.

dedication and blessing of the school’s
Gustafson Center on September 26.
“We feel very blessed that our journey has
brought us to Roncalli Catholic and that
the James and Kristen Gustafson Family
Foundation can help get the new media center
off the ground,” said Kristen Gustafson.
The Gustafsons have been active members
of the community since joining the Roncalli
Catholic family. They were the event chairs
for the 25th Annual Festa del Leone. Kristy is
also an active member of the RCHS Campus
Ministry committee.
The Gustafsons are
entrepreneurs and former owners of Quality
Brands of Omaha Inc.
NEW DIRECTION FOR TECHNOLOGY We are pleased to announce a 1:1 Technology Initiative for our 2015-2016 school year at Roncalli Catholic High School.
This move will help engage students in critical thinking, collaboration and communication as we prepare them for life
beyond high school. Please see the links below for details regarding this new and exciting direction for learning and
technology at Roncalli Catholic.

On November 2, more than 300 participants turned
out for Roncalli Catholic’s 14th Annual High Tea,
showcasing creativity while raising more than $18,000
to support the students of Roncalli Catholic.
According to Roncalli Catholic president, Jeff Dempsey,
the annual event exhibits the culture of tradition and
family that is the hallmark of the school, celebrating its
50th anniversary this year.

“As we celebrate 50 years of Catholic education, the
tradition, camaraderie and success of High Tea showcase
what makes our school special,” said Dempsey. “With
362 students, our highest enrollment in more than 20
years, the support of our family community continues
to be vital to the success of our school.”
This year’s High Tea featured Michael Walker, also
known as The Vintage Vocalist. Fan favorite Walker also
performed at the 2012 High Tea and is known to feature
a playlist that is reminiscent of the mid-1960s Rat Pack.
His performances include songs such as “Fly Me to the
Moon,” “It Had to Be You,” and “Beyond the Sea,” to
name a few. Michael has recorded several albums, made
national TV appearances, and appeared live on stages
across America.

14th Annual High Tea
continued from page 8
A long-standing Roncalli Catholic tradition, High Tea
raises funds for students while inspiring creativity and
fun for participants. Each year, the school’s Rummel
Gymnasium is transformed into a giant tea room,
with the table decorations as varied as the hostesses
and volunteers who decorate them. From Belgium
to the Orient, and from Halloween and Thanksgiving
to Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day, this year’s themes
showed that this event truly had something for
everyone.
The traditional high tea luncheon was catered by
Pleasure Your Palate and Roncalli Catholic alumnus
Ted Thomsen (1976) and featured chicken salad on a
croissant with fruit bites. Apple scones and clotted
cream were made by Roncalli Catholic’s Foods
and Nutrition students. More than 30 students and
parents volunteered to set-up, serve guests and cleanup following the event.

Fr. Steven Boes, National Executive
Director of Boys Town, presents
Fr. Lloyd Gnirk, RCHS President
Emeritus, with the Spirit of Father
Flanagan Award at the September 17
Priests Appreciation Dinner at Boys
Town.
The award is given annually to a
priest who has dedicated his life
to the spirituality and education of
children and families.
Fr. Lloyd Gnirk Receives Father Flanagan Priest Award
On September 17, Fr. Lloyd Gnirk was presented the Spirit
of Fr. Flanagan Award during the Priests Appreciation
Dinner held each year at Boys Town. The award is given
annually by Fr. Steven Boes, National Executive Director
of Boys Town, to a priest who has dedicated his life to the
spirituality and education of children and families during
their career as a priest.
Fr. Gnirk has served in the field of education for 37 years,
starting with an internship as a Deacon and Senior Religion
teacher for Cathedral High School in 1977. Ordained in
1978, he spent the next three years at Fremont Bergan
teaching Junior and Senior Religion as well as serving
as the Campus Minister and Religion Department Chair.
Armed with both his teaching certification and a B.A. in
French, Fr. Gnirk’s first stint at Roncalli Catholic was 19811983 teaching both French and Religion.
He spent the next six years as the President of St. Joseph
High School in Omaha. In 1989, Fr. Gnirk returned to the
Crimson Pride to become the RCHS President, a position
he held until 1996. During that time, he also served as
the Pastor of St. Rose from 1992 to 1996. He then spent 12
years as Pastor of St. Pius X in Omaha, during which time
he served on Roncalli Catholic’s Board of Education. He
resumed his role as President of RCHS in 2008 and became
Roncalli Catholic’s President Emeritus in 2010, a position
he still holds.
Currently, Fr. Gnirk is also the Pastor of St. John in Valley,
Nebraska, where he has been since 2008. Previous parish
appointments include Sacred Heart, St. Columbkille and
Holy Cross.
Although he is a Norfolk native, Fr. Gnirk attended St.
John (now Mt. Michael) when it was still a high school
seminary and was a member of the school’s last graduating
class in 1970. In 1974, he earned a B.A. in French and his
teacher certification from the University of St. Thomas, in
St. Paul, Minnesota. He earned a Master of Divinity from
the St. Paul Seminary in 1978. He went on to earn a Master
of Science in Secondary Administration from Creighton
University in 1984.

Archbishop Emeritus Elden Curtiss
Visited Junior and Senior Religion
Classes Mid-November
Archbishop Emeritus Elden Curtiss stopped by to visit our Junior
and Senior Religion classes on November 13. He covered topics
ranging from the history and structure of the Catholic Church and the
importance of Vocations to his own calling and personal experiences
throughout his 38 years as a bishop.
According to Archbishop Emeritus Curtiss he knew from his earliest
memories that he wanted to be a priest. He noted that, beginning at
just three years of age, he spent his childhood “saying Mass” while
other children played.
“It is not always easy but my life has been happy and fulfilling
because I answered God’s call,” he said.

visiting with Mr. Mueting’s Junior Religion
class on November 13.
He went on to encourage students to do the same, stating that “the
things that challenge us in life are what make us.”
Student questions also shed light on what it means to be a bishop as
well as the “career” path taken for the vocation of priesthood.

Crimson Pride Volleyball Finishes Season with
a District Championship Win

win!
On November 4, the CRIMSON PRIDE Volleyball Team
won the B-3 District Championship and set foot on the
trail to the state volleyball tournament for the first time
in 31 years. In 1983, the Crimson Pride Volleyball Team
qualified for the state tournament but no team since that
time has even made it to the sub-state finals – until now.
Macke has been coaching volleyball for the last 13
years, and has been with Nebraska Elite Volleyball, a
club volleyball organization, for the past seven years.
Originally from Kearney, she played all sports in high
school and in a competitive adult volleyball league until
just five years ago.
The team beat Blair to advance to the Sub-state Final at
Aurora High School. Their bid for the state championship
was cut short when the Aurora Huskies defeated the team
on November 8.
According to Macke the team improved immensely from
the beginning to the end of the season.
According to RCHS Athletic Director, Jim Meister, the
team shows great promise for a repeat performance next
year.
“We’ll have several great players back and they will be
able to build off the success they had and the experience
of qualifying for Sub-state this year,” said Meister.
With new Head Coach Andrea Macke at the helm, the
team finished the season with a District Championship
and a 16-16 record.
“They were willing to work, make changes to get better
and compete,” she said. “I tried several different lineups
and moved the girls to different positions before I found
out what worked best for the team.”
Macke says her goal for next year is to continue to
provide a winning culture, with the girls improving both
individually and as a team.
“I would like to fiercely compete with the teams on our
schedule next year,” she continued. “Staying above 500
and qualifying for state would be our main goals.”

RCHS SPORTS NEWS:
Roncalli Catholic Announces
New Baseball Coach, Jake Hoover
According to new Head Coach Jake Hoover, his specific
coaching philosophy is to develop better players on the
field but also to feed their overall growth as individuals.
“My ultimate goal for my players is that they will leave
the program with honor, pride, courage and commitment,
which is the belief system I work to instill in the team,”
said Hoover. “I believe this will lead to success and
growth for everyone involved in the program.”
Roncalli Catholic has hired Jake Hoover to serve as its
new Head Coach. Hoover joins the Crimson Pride from
Bellevue East High School/American Legion Post 339
where he has served as the Junior Varsity Head Baseball
Coach since 2012.
According to RCHS Athletic Director Jim Meister Hoover
is great fit for the Crimson Pride.
“I am very confident that Jake Hoover will continue
our long-standing tradition of success on the baseball
field,” said Meister. “His leadership style and coaching
philosophy is in-line with our program and promises to
be effective for our players.”
Hoover has been coaching for the past eight years but
his love of baseball dates back to his childhood. Playing
the game since he was just five years old, Hoover was
recruited to play for the University of Nebraska at
Omaha (UNO) following graduation from Bellevue East.
Unfortunately, injury sidelined his career but his love of
the game lives on in his coaching.
Although the baseball season does not officially start until
February, Hoover has hit the ground running. The team
is currently in a voluntary strength conditioning program
and will begin batting practice in the next couple of
weeks.
Hoover attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Bellevue
and graduated from Bellevue East. He graduated Magna
Cum Lade from the University of Nebraska at Omaha
in December 2012 with a degree in Education and an
endorsement in K-12 Physical Education. In addition
to his coaching duties, he is currently teaching Physical
Education at Westside Middle School.
