Superintendent for 15 years
Every year there has been a reduction in budget
Receive $280/student but then Act 10 and there is no state law to mandate increase
This is the first time he has concern of how they will manage long term (i.e. 10 years
from now)
Makeup of our school district will need to change and class sizes may need to increase
and change in breadth of classes offered
Feels students receive quality education in Tosa and that is why people choose to live
here and send their children to school here
Strategic Planning to evaluate budget, existing schools and whether to build new or
remodel old buildings, cost of operations
School board does not carry a strong voice for the State Budget; people listen to parents
School funding is so complicated and hard to understand which makes the issue more
difficult to discuss (80% of budget goes to people (i.e. salaries)
ROOSEVELT ELEMENTARY PTA MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES PAGE 1 OF 4 PTA MEETING MINUTES MARCH 03, 2015 Concern related to decrease interest in those pursuing education degree and therefore
decrease quality teachers
• Encourage all parents to look at “Big Picture” and how it affects everyone and future
• Goal is to not have the students see the impact these budget cuts may cause
• For Wauwatosa: Open Enrollment funding helpful
• State Wide Issue for budget and not just issue for Tosa
• Allowing those who do not have a teaching license but have a degree in another field to
teach special courses in 6th-12th grade can be beneficial. Need a passion for kids and
teaching.
• 504/Title 1 programs will not change nor the funding for them
• May need to look at offerings like foreign language (i.e. French, German) in middle
school or the world language program in high school because of budget cuts
• Don’t feel district should eliminate Music, Spanish, gym, etc. because of budget cuts
• Previous Budget cuts already changed benefits and compensation for Staff and they have
a high deductible insurance and HSA account
Parent Questions:
1. “Is the budget cuts evenly distributed across districts or are some more affected than
others?” Response of Dr. Ertl: “Equal distribution”
2. “Do you see burnout from the teachers or teacher issues because of these budget cuts?”
Response of Dr. Ertl: “Devaluing of educators is a big concern for teachers.” “I have a lot
of respect for what our teachers do.
3. “What can we as parents do to help?” Response of Dr. Ertl: “Contact legislators related to
concern with budget cuts. Write individualized letters to them with concerns.”
