Rosary Primary School Term Overview Term:2 Grade Level: 4 Teachers: Jodie Dawson, Sandy Vincent and Beth Clarke School Focus: Believe Explore Strive Triumph (BEST) Explore Through inquiry based learning we acquire the skills to become critical thinkers who are flexible, creative lifelong learners. Religious Education Integrated with Creative Arts and English Enduring Understanding: The life and actions of the Church are modelled on the life and actions of Jesus. Jesus gave an example of leadership as service to God’s mission in the Church. Students will know: The key actions of the Church community which ensure the mission and ministry of Jesus is lived out. The organisational structure of the Catholic Church and roles and responsibilities. Pope Francis is an exemplar role model of servant leadership. Students will be able to: Identify and locate some Church communities belonging to the Catholic Church in Australia. Define the meaning of ‘Catholic’ and ‘Church’. Make connections between the practices of Church communities and examples of Jesus’ actions. Identify characteristics and give examples of servant leadership. English Integrated with Science, History, Religion and PD READING: This term we are looking at the author Colin Thiele. The students will be looking at the stories ‘Storm Boy’ and ‘Pannikin and Pinta’. Week One of this term will focus on the ANZAC Centenary. Modelled and Shared: Simpson and His Donkey, My Grandpa Marches on ANZAC Day, Storm Boy, Pannikin and Pinta. Guided: Small groups targeting specific reading strategies including a predicting, visualising, inferring, fluency and comprehension skills. Independent reading of an individual novel. SPELLING: Students will learn a variety of spelling rules and strategies including Look Say Cover Visualise Write Check (LSCVWC), syllables, memory, mnemonics, base words, segmenting words, word shapes, word sorts, small words inside spelling words and activity sheets. Students will also have personal and topic words. TALKING AND LISTENING Students will write a short speech on Rostrum topics. We will teach speech writing techniques and tips for presenting speeches. Students will research information on Colin Thiele and use their knowledge of characters from the class texts to conduct mock interviews. GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION Students will recognise how quotation marks are used in texts to signal dialogue, titles and quoted (direct) speech. They will experiment with the use of quotation marks in their own writing. Review of common nouns, proper nouns and pronouns, as well as verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. WRITING During the term our focus is on writing to entertain. Students will continue to write in their Writers Journal and have opportunities to develop their skills in narrative, description and poetry. They will plan, draft and publish written texts. Students will continue to develop their cursive writing by using clearly formed joined letters, and develop increased fluency and automaticity. Mathematics Investigate number sequences involving multiples of 3,6,7,8, and 9 Recall multiplication facts up to 10x10 and related division facts Develop efficient mental and written strategies and use appropriate digital technologies for multiplication and for division where there is no remainder. Explore and describe number patterns resulting from performing multiplication. Convert between units of time. Use AM and PM notation and solve simple time problems. Use scaled instruments to measure and compare lengths, masses, capacities and temperatures. Describe possible everyday events and order their chances of occurring. Identify everyday events when one cannot happen if the other happens. Identify events where the chances of one will not be affected by the occurrence of the other. History/Geography Key Inquiry Questions How do environments support the lives of people and other living things? How do different views about the environment influence approaches to sustainability? How can people use places and environments more sustainably? Students will investigate: Science and Technology The importance of environments to animals and people and different views on how they can be protected. The location of the major countries of Africa and South America in relation to Australia and their main characteristics including the types of natural vegetation and native animals in at least two countries from both continents. PDHPE Integrated with English Integrated with Mathematics, English and Creative Arts Physical Education Primary Connections – Plants In Action Students will understand that living things have life cycles. Students will recognise that environmental factors can affect lifecycles. Students will identify and construct questions, propose hypotheses and suggest possible outcomes. Technology Students will have the opportunity to: Use the Interactive White Board Visit the Computer Lab Use of the computers outside the classrooms Use of iPads Athletics / Dance Dance: Children will participate in ‘Footsteps’ Dance Program. They will learn a variety of locomotor and non-locomotor movements. Athletics Skills: long jump, shot put, sprints, discus, distance running, starting position and coordination Kicking Skills: Children will develop their kicking skills. Children will have opportunities to understand and learn about: fundamental movement skills in different types of physical activity Children will have opportunities to learn to: practise the application of fundamental movement skills to create movement sequences in a range of physical activities(e.g. dance, track and field) Personal Development/Health Students have opportunities to understand and learn about: Factors that influence their self-esteem The characteristics of effective communication (e.g. active listening) and factors that influence communication(e.g. feelings, peer pressure) How to distinguish between products that support their health and those that do not. Balanced eating habits and a variety of good food choices. Students have opportunities to learn to: Identify different influences on personal identity (e.g. media, peers, cultural beliefs, family, school) Assess the effects of actions that enhance (e.g. active listening, showing care) or diminish (e.g. judging people negatively, bullying. Planning a meal based on healthy food choices. Creative Arts Homework Integrated with English, Religion, Science and Geography Visual Arts and Dance Students have opportunities to understand and learn about: Visual arts, dance, drama, music and media The portrayal of subject matter in life-like and symbolic ways in the visual arts (e.g. people, other living things) Traditions and techniques associated with different artistic works in the visual arts (e.g. drawing, painting,) Traditions and techniques associated with different forms of the performing arts (e.g. mime, storytelling, improvisation) Students have opportunities to learn to: Explore different materials, techniques and processes to make 2D and 3D artistic works (e.g. explore proportion, perspective and composition) Use body movements and some elements of dance (e.g. action, dynamics, time, space, relationships, structure) to interpret ideas and feelings or create dance sequences Apply some elements of media to communicate a message to a familiar audience (e.g. poster, advertisement) It is suggested that no more than 30 mins be spent on homework, four times a week. Below is a guide to possible activities. Parents should certainly exercise their own judgement regarding homework in relation to other out of school activities already undertaken by their son/daughter. Spelling – The students will be given the opportunity to practise spelling words through the spelling activities grid. Maths – Mathletics Reading – Students are expected to read for enjoyment for a recommended minimum of 15 minutes each day. This term we would like to encourage children to read a variety of text types. More information will be included in their Homework Book. Diaries- Students are expected to record their reading in their School Diaries and return to school on Friday to be sighted by the teacher.
