The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Ken McIntosh feels that his approach is the key. “Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Some people may call the way I do things a little old-fashioned but it’s amazing how a simple mix of manners, punctuality and personal service increases your business. I’m constantly taken aback by customers who are shocked that we turn up when we say we will, do the job that is required and clean up after ourselves. I’m afraid it indicates to me that there are many companies who don’t and that’s just not fair to the customer.” a major factor in his success. “When I started out I just did the things that came naturally to me. I really hate being let down by tradesmen so I was determined not to let that happen to my customers. As it turns out that little bit of extra care has meant I get friends and family of people I have done work for on the phone constantly so it’s not just personally satisfying but good for business too. At the end of the day it’s not rocket science, is it?” So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Ken a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help! Cloudy2Clear service the Coventry, Nuneaton & Warwick areas and Ken is finding that his ethos is proving to be STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING? Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes! NEW FOR 2015 We now hold weekly sessions at the Ridgeway Special School, Deansway, Woodloes Park, Warwick. Held every Monday evening from 6pm - 8pm in a heated pool with a qualified Physiotherapist in attendance. Cost of each session £10.00* *An initial dry land assessment would be carried out by your Physiotherapist before commencing on a specific, individual, pool exercise program. Hydrotherapy aims to help those experiencing joint and muscle pain or recovering from injury or illness. The warm water helps with relaxation and pain relief and will also help strengthen and stretch muscles. The support of the water lessens strain on the joints, which is ideal for conditions such as arthritis and back pain or if someone is recovering from injury, illness or surgery. The ability to swim is not necessary as the water is no deeper than chest high. Have you ever wondered about the lifecycle of a flea? No, it’s not the kind of thing that crops up in everyday conversations but it is something that we, at the vets, talk about all the time! Fleas are so common that even the cleanest pets can pick them up unless they are regularly given a preventative treatment. The trouble with fleas is that only the adult fleas are visible on our pets and even then it is estimated that for every five fleas you actually see there will be 10 cocoons, 15 larvae and 35 eggs in your carpets or soft furnishings! Each adult female flea can lay up to 2000 eggs which drop off your pet and hatch into larvae in carpets, upholstery and bedding. They then pupate and can stay dormant in this ‘cocoon’ stage for over a year. Hatching is stimulated by the movement and warmth of passing pets and people; the adult fleas emerge ready for their first blood meal and the cycle begins all over again. As well as causing scratching, skin damage and sometimes flea allergy dermatitis, fleas also transmit tapeworm. The tapeworm larvae are carried by the adult fleas which are then ingested when your pet grooms itself. These attach themselves to the small intestine and can grow into adult worms up to 5 metres long. Tapeworms appear as flat ribbon shaped pieces or pale segments the size of a grain of rice which are filled with eggs in the faeces or escaping from the pet’s anus All cats and dogs will get worms at some stage in their lives. In puppies and kittens an infestation of these parasites can be passed on from their mothers, can cause serious health concerns and may even be life threatening. Adult pets may carry tapeworms with few symptoms beyond a dull coat, possible weight loss and lethargy. However other worms such as Angiostrongylus vasorum a type of lungworm can be fatal. Also Roundworm can be passed on to humans and has been known to cause sight problems in children. After a holiday in the countryside ticks can become a problem for our pets too. Ticks are usually picked up from long grasses, hedgerows and wooded areas often where sheep are grazing. Dogs walked in our local parks may never have had a tick but after a holiday in different countryside return with small lumps. The ticks attach themselves with their strong mouth parts and feed off the animal, growing dramatically as they do so. They can grow from the size of a pin head to a large pea and transmit several infections such as Lymes Disease to the host. Less frequently ticks can attach themselves to people too. Ticks should be removed with great care to prevent leaving the mouth parts buried in the skin and your vet surgery can advise on this. There are also easy to use preventive treatments for pets prone to picking up ticks. Parasite prevention is simple but it must be done regularly with effective medication. Your vet surgery will be able to recommend the most suitable products for your pet’s lifestyle and the risks in the local area. So, you have no need to be embarrassed about mentioning parasites at the vets….we talk about them all the time! www.roundaboutmagazines.net 19 Dog Walker and Pet Sitter Available 24 hours For those daily doggy desires or just a happy holiday From Rabbits to Horses and all in between... Winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best New Play. Breathtaking in its scope; endlessly funny; deliciously comic, deeply moving: these are the attributes of Hall’s play. It tells of a group of blunt, outspoken Geordie miners in the 1930s who stumble disbelievingly into national fame as artists. Punch lines worthy of the best stand up comic; a plea for the universal availability of the arts to all, not just the privileged elite; this is an inspirational true story told with uncompromising, gloves off directness. I am a great fan of hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers, but this year why not include some unusual containers and planters to bring a different look or even a bit of humour to your garden? You can use almost anything as a planter. I have seen some really crazy plantings in disused hand basins, loo cisterns or even the lavatory itself! If you are using something like a hand basin which only has one plug hole in the bottom, make sure that you cover it with pieces of broken crock and then perhaps put an inch or two of course gravel in the bottom of the container before you put the compost in. But there are plenty of other normal household objects which can be used. How about that old watering can that’s sprung a leak? Whether you have a traditional galvanised can or a more modern plastic one, you can have great fun planting it up with bedding, particularly if you choose something like trailing blue lobelia to come spurting out of the top and perhaps even the end. Buckets too can look really good fun and if you have one which still has its handle firmly attached, then you could use it as a hanging basket. Old footwear with can be turned into planting with real flair. If you use old gardening boots or a pair of shoes, you are unlikely to need to add extra drainage as they invariably drain well. But if you are going to recycle a pair of wellies, then you may need to punch a few holes. Again cascading plants can look particularly dramatic, but a bunch of bright red See if there’s anything in your kitchen cupboards that could be recycled. An old saucepan, casserole pot or even a mixing bowl or jug can make an attractive planter. If the container is large and there are no drainage holes in it, then the other option is to plant it up as a mini bog garden and use moisture-loving plants in it such as hostas or pond-side irises. Colanders or sieves also make interesting and unusual hanging baskets. You can simply plant one or two upright specimens in the centre of the colander and then use plenty of trailing plants around the edge and allow them to cascade down. You could even create your own living tea set with an old sizeable teapot and some large mugs full of favourite summer bedding. Larger items such as old wheelbarrows or chimney pots can often be bought very cheaply from a local salvage or junk yard. Something like a wheelbarrow gives a huge planting area and because it holds such a large volume of compost, it will also mean it will be less inclined to dry out. All these containers can be treated in just the same way as a container that you have bought from the garden centre. As I mentioned drainage is of great importance, but when it comes to choosing a compost and the plants you need themselves, nothing any different from when you are planting up a more traditional container and believe me you can have a lot more fun! Serve hot or cold with a crisp green salad drizzled with a tangy balsamic glaze. Ingredients: • 4 firm beefsteak tomatoes 1 Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. • 3 tbsp Virgin olive oil 2 Use a sharp knife to slice the tops off the tomatoes and slice a thin sliver from the base of each tomato to prevent them wobbling in the dish. 3 Use a teaspoon to scoop out the seeds and flesh from each tomato. Finely chop and reserve the flesh but discard the seeds. Place the tomato shells in a shallow ovenproof dish. 4 Heat half the olive oil in a medium-sized frying pan. Add the chopped onion and fry over a medium-high heat for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Add the garlic and fry for a further 4-5 minutes until tender and golden. Stir in the chopped tomato flesh, breadcrumbs, parsley, mint and capers and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5 Spoon the breadcrumb mixture into the tomato shells, pressing it down gently then top with the lids. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the tomatoes are just tender. Serve hot or cold. • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 75g fresh white breadcrumbs • 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley • 1 tbsp fresh chopped mint • 2 tsp capers, drained and rinsed • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Tip: Replace the breadcrumbs with cous cous if liked. Place 115g cous cous in a heatproof bowl and pour over boiling water to cover. Stir once then place a plate on top of the bowl and leave for 10 minutes or until the liquid has been absorbed. Fluff up the grains with a fork then stir into the fried onion mixture as above. Add some toasted pine nuts, chopped dried apricots, fresh chopped coriander a little harissa paste for a more exotic flavour.
