FISU Update No. 1

FISU UPDATE #1
Universiade Gwangju, Korea July 3,4 & 5
This is the first official update for the upcoming event in Korea. The Canadian University
Rowing Association (CURA) and Rowing Canada would like to continue to build on the
successes of last year’s FISU event in France and see top CURA rowers representing Canada
again this year.
To date we have received expressions of interest from 62 CURA athletes. We have developed a
team selection plan and logistics plan. Here is what you need to know at this stage:
1) CURA’s FISU TEAM SELECTION
2) Cost and Deposit
3) Events
CURA’s FISU TEAM SELECTION:
Goal:
To select Canadian university athletes to represent Canada and achieve medal winning
performances at the World University and Universiade rowing championships.
Overview:
Athletes should understand that success at FISU regattas requires a very high standard of
performance, likely equivalent or just slightly below the speed required for success at the U23
Worlds. Athletes should be able to achieve at least 89% of the gold medal standard to be
considered and have ergs scores of sub 6:15 for HM, 6:25 for LM, 7:10 for HW and 7:20 for
LW.
Given that it is understood that the cost of attending these championships is mostly bourn by the
athletes, it imperative that the cost of trying out for teams and team selection does not add
significant additional cost to the athletes.
The CURA Selection Committee (CURA SC), comprised of at least three CURA coaches from
three different universities will be key to making decisions for athlete and coach selection.
It is understood that because of the costs involved, direct comparison of athletes across the
county can be difficult to achieve. However it is critical that CURA is selecting highly
competitive athletes and crews. High Performance at the preceding year’s CURCs, NRCs as
well as RADAR testing results and RCA Small Boat spring trials results will be used by the
CURA Selection Committee to short list a team.
It is recognized that one of the best ways to develop a successful crew given the cost challenge is
to use existing high performance crews that have demonstrated success at CURCs as the
“backbone” of FISU crews especially in the 8+ and 4- / 4x. Ideally that crew would be a gold
medal winning CURC crew. That crew and its coach would have an opportunity to apply to the
CURA Selection Committee as a crew to represent Canada. There would however be an
assessment to strengthen this crew with the addition of other athletes, as selected by the CURA
SC, if it was felt that there was an opportunity to improve the speed of that crew. Example - if
appropriate, strong athletes not selected to the RCA U23 team would be considered.
Key selection would include all or most of the following criteria:
Competitive CURC performance
Competitive NRC performance
A 2015 - 2k and / or 6k result is mandatory
RCA Spring Small Boat Trials results (West April 17,18,19 Burnaby Lake or East May 1,2,3
London ) – participation and results are mandatory
Each athlete’s university coach recommendation
COST:
The cost per athlete is estimated at $3,500 to $4,000 per person. This would include flights,
ground travel, accommodation and CIS fees. We have been told by the CIS that the cost would
likely be lower than this estimate.
Athletes that are interested in being considered in the selection process will need to pay a $500
deposit by April 10 2015
