ROYAL DRAWING
SCHOOL
The aim of the Royal Drawing School is to raise the standard and
profile of drawing through teaching and practice. It is one of only
a few institutions offering in-depth, quality tuition for those who
wish to develop their observational drawing skills.
The Royal Drawing School is part of The Prince’s Charities, a group
of not-for-profit organisations of which The Prince of Wales is
President. The charities reflect The Prince of Wales’ long-term
and innovative perspective, and seek to address areas of previously
unmet need.
Drawing helps to put your thoughts in order. It can make
you think in different ways.David Hockney ra
THREE PROGR AMMES
THREE LOCATIONS
We offer daytime and evening courses in drawing suitable for all
levels, from complete beginners to experienced artists and creative professionals. Courses are organised into three main programmes based
at Royal Drawing School Shoreditch, Royal Drawing School Central

in South Kensington. Many courses also take place outside of the studio,
in museums, galleries and London’s streets and green spaces.
Royal Drawing School Shoreditch
Over 38 drawing-based courses run from
these studios every term, encompassing the
different strands of our curriculum: Drawing
in the Studio, Drawing London, Drawing
from Art and Drawing and Imagination.
The programme is open to all levels,
from the professional artist to a complete
beginner. The programme is taught by
a distinguished faculty of over 55 practising
artists. Studio-based courses run from our
top floor converted Victorian warehouse in
Shoreditch and Out of House courses take
students out to draw in London’s museums,
galleries, streets and green spaces. The
Shoreditch programme also includes printmaking courses that run from the on-site
intaglio print room and art history lectures
and in-conversations with contemporary
artists on Wednesday nights. On Monday
evenings there are free Life Drawing and
Etching courses and on Fridays there is
a free Drawing from Art course for London
Art Students.

CENTRAL
Whether you’re a creative professional, art
student, practising artist or someone working or shopping nearby, the 3,000 square
foot top floor studios provide a concentrated
and quiet sanctuary above the hustle and
bustle of London’s busiest street. They also
offer an ideal base for drawing outdoors and
in the many galleries and museums nearby.
Drawing offers many different benefits
– from enhanced artistic expression to
increased concentration and focus, and
an ability to think and communicate in
different ways. It is a crucial route to conceptual innovation across every creative
discipline from fashion and product design
to filmmaking and fine art. Royal Drawing
School Central’s location in the heartland
of London’s creative industries is reflected
in its programme, which offers drawingbased courses ranging from life drawing
to animation, and graphic storytelling to
drawing for fashion.
Tuition at Royal Drawing School Central
comes from the Royal Drawing School’s
distinguished teaching faculty, providing
an opportunity to learn from leading practising artists. They are joined by alumni of
The Drawing Year, Royal Drawing School’s
postgraduate scholarship programme,
all young contemporary practising artists
who have undergone intensive training
in drawing from observation.
What’s on this term
For those working in the area, Early Morning
Life Drawing offers an opportunity to concentrate the mind before a day at the office
(much like early morning Yoga courses),
while Drink and Draw evenings on Friday
nights provide a relaxed and thoughtful
space to unwind at the end of the week. For
London art students there are free dropin drawing courses on Tuesdays. On the
weekends there is plenty on offer for people
shopping nearby, with courses where
parents and family can draw on the same
day. You could even learn a skill whilst your
partner shops, in our Saturday Life Drawing
course. This term we will be expanding the
programme into paint with Life Painting:
Figure, Colour, Space on Thursdays and
Painting a Head on Fridays.

Drawing Comics and Graphic Novels
Emily Haworth-Booth
6.30 pm – 9 pm / 8 weeks
£140
This life drawing course is an opportunity
to draw from the model and explore formal
issues such as tone and measurement,
as well as more complex compositions and
narratives, with a few twists on the traditional life room set-up along the way. There
will be a different model each week, with
a variety of poses both long and short.
This class is for those new to drawing as
well as those who are well-practiced in the
life room. Drop-in places are available.

Beginning with the more rudimentary
technical processes such as drypoint,
hard ground and soft ground, students will
progress to more complicated ones, such
as aquatint, sugar lift, surface rolls and
viscosity printing, whilst keeping drawing
at the core of their work. This class is suitable as an introduction for those new to the

MONDAY
EVENING
This course is designed both to introduce
beginners to the huge potential of the
graphic novel form, and to allow those with
some experience to reconsider style and
process, receive feedback and experiment
with technique. Shorter exercises will generate ideas, build confidence and skills and
encourage experimentation, before leading
on to individual project work with one-toone support from the tutor. Students will
explore the many different forms the drawn
story can take, from fiction to diary comics,
memoir, literary adaptation, biography
and history, with inspiration drawn from
contemporary examples. They will create
several of their own comics and graphic
short stories and will finish the course with
a complete pencilled and inked story. Some
life drawing is incorporated into the term
with an emphasis on combining observation with imagination. Optional homework
is set each week. Open to all levels.

Painting by Alison Boult
Much like an early morning yoga class, early
morning drawing can concentrate the mind
before work, nurturing focus and creativity.
In this life drawing class students will be
encouraged to draw intuitively in a relaxed
environment. There will be a different
model each week, with both long and short
poses. Suitable for all levels from complete
beginners to creative professionals.
The Painted Print: Monoprinting
Phoebe Stannard / Leonie Lachlan
10 am – 5 pm / 10 weeks
£355
In this printing and drawing course, students will explore monoprinting directly
from the life model, without the often frustrating experience of ‘drawing up’ prints.
One pose will be held for the duration of
each day in the studio, so that students are
able to print in the adjacent printroom, see
their results, and return to the same view
to re-work their drawings. The course will
also include an introduction to drypoint and
look at the relationship between observation, mark-making and line. It is taught
by printmakers with an interest in drawing,
revealing the secrets of monoprinting to
those new to printing and opening up the
life room to printmakers.
In each session of this five week course,
a challenging series of exercises will isolate,
examine and force engagement with different aspects of drawing. You will need to be
open minded and up for a challenge, but
other than that there are no prerequisites.
You don’t need to be an experienced drawer;
an absolute beginner can often have the edge
and we won’t be drawing a life model. Each
week will be focused, directed and a surprise.

Nobody else can draw quite like you.
This course is designed to help students
develop their own personal voice and find
out what most excites them about drawing.
There will be a life model, adopting
a mixture of short and long poses, with an
emphasis on one to one tuition for every
student and the opportunity for longer
personal tutorials throughout the course.

a different model each week. This class
is suitable for those new to drawing as well
as for those who are well practiced on the
drawing board.
This course explores various theatrical ideas
and devices through drawing, taking inspiration from artists like Watteau and Ensor.
We will work imaginatively and from life;
creating sets and peopling them with models, using a play or opera for inspiration.
Each week students will consider different
elements of the theatrical through drawing,
including light and shadows, character,
costume, space and scale. We will look at
artists who have designed for the theatre,
including Pablo Picasso, Sydney Nolan,
David Hockney and Stephen Chambers, as
well as those who have drawn and painted
from constructed sets and costumed models
in the studio, such as Henri Matisse
and Paula Rego.

Drawing A Head
Naomi Grant / Laura Smith
6.30 pm – 9 pm / 10 weeks
£175
This course aims to give students the opportunity to investigate the unique challenges
presented by making a portrait – allowing
time for quick studies as well as sustained
periods of observation. Veering away from
more prescriptive or formulaic approaches
to this genre and instead allowing students
to develop their own way of seeing the
human head. There will also be opportunity
for informal discussion of the evening’s
drawings at the end of the session.
The portrait is a meeting point of the artist and the sitter at a particular point in
time. The cult of the individual has always
coincided with a fascination surrounding
the art of making portraits, from Alexander
the Great and the flourishing of portraiture
in the ancient world, to 1960s New York
American Icons like Elvis, Marilyn and
Brando, captured by Andy Warhol. This
class will explore the way the artist’s selfexpression influences the way a person
is portrayed. Students will be encouraged
to use a variety of approaches which allowed
those artists to explore this subject: with
opportunities to work in both colour and
black and white.

How is it to draw a living person in the studio
and then draw a person captured by another
painter’s hand? Each morning, participants
will draw portraits from the model in the
studio. Each afternoon, the group will draw

Portrait Gallery or Wallace Collection. The
day is structured to extend students’ drawing
perception and ability through comparative
experience. Whether you are a beginner or

Saturday Sketchbook Club
Henry Gibbons Guy / Richard Burton
10 am – 4 pm / 10 weeks / Out of House & Studio
£280
Sketchbooks are an important way of recording places, people and ideas, and exploring
your voice as an artist. At exhibitions sketchbooks are often the most compelling and
intimate pieces, providing a window into the
artist’s mind. Saturday Sketchbook Club is
aimed at developing students’ sketchbooks,
realising the potential within a fleeting
image and studying the historical use of the
sketch. In the mornings, students will make
the most of Royal Drawing School Central’s
location, drawing in nearby museums, galleries, green spaces, and the busy surrounding streets. In the afternoon the group will
return to the studio to study and critique the
work and explore the possibility of extending their sketches into further mediums,
including printmaking in the on-site intaglio
printmaking studio.
Life Drawing for 14–18 year-olds (drop-in)
Tara Versey / Richard Burton
2 pm – 5 pm / 10 weeks
Drop-in; £7 per session
Life drawing gives us an opportunity to
meditate on the human figure, trying
to see the body anew, as if for the first time.
Students will consider how each of us sees
the figure in our own way. We will explore
the relationships within the figure itself as
well as the space it occupies and in-depth
studies of independent parts of the body.
Da Vinci encouraged his students to draw
every profile they saw; the heads, hands and
feet convey a lot of meaning and character,
and students will be encouraged to address
these areas which are often overlooked,
hurried, or deemed as too difficult. This
course is open to 14 – 18 year-olds.

WEEKEND
WORKSHOPS
Weekend workshops run from 10am to
4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 June
to 5 July. There are 6 weekend workshops
programmed for the summer term, listed
below.
Finding the Narrative: Drawing the
Artist’s Book
Perienne Christian
10 am – 4 pm / 2 days (6 – 7 Jun)
£75
From William Blake to Anselm Keifer, artists have made ‘artists’ books’ as standalone
works of art. In the spirit of the flaneur, we
will spend the first morning drawing in the
city’s streets, capturing the visceral qualities of the vibrant city. In the afternoon, we
will work from these drawings, using the
mediums of collage and basic printmaking
processes such as drypoint and monoprint.
The second morning will begin with a demonstration of the concertina artists’ book
structure. The rest of the day will be spent
in the print or drawing studio, working
from images created the previous day, teasing out narratives and accessing memory
and imagination to create an artists’ book.
By the end of this course, each student
will have created their own unique artists’
book, as well as a series of images depicting
their own process of ‘finding the narrative’.
Suitable for complete beginners, as well
as those with previous experience.

Jonathan Farr / Louise Wilde
10 am – 4 pm / 2 days (4 – 5 Jul)
£75
This is a two day workshop in drawing the
city and the experience of place. Based each
day in a distinctive part of London students will work on combining views from
multiple and varied positions to create a
portrait of the city and its layers of structure, space and speed. Suitable for all levels
of ability, students will be shown strategies
for capturing the complexities of urban life,
and how drawing can be used as a means of
recording personal experience of the city’s
character.
What is this drawing? Not once in describing
the shape of that mass did I shift my eyes from
the model. Why? Because I wanted to be sure
that nothing evaded my grasp of it. Rodin
In this two day workshop students will be
introduced to 2D Drawn Animation. From
flipbooks to large-scale charcoal animated
projects, students will explore a range of
approaches to observational and imaginative hand-drawn 2D animation. On the
second day students will focus on the basic
principles of drawn animation, devising
their own sequences and collaborating on
a group project which then will be
animated.
Drawing a Head
Clara Drummond
10 am – 4 pm / 2 days (13 – 14 Jun)
£75
This workshop will focus on exploring
the drama of the human face and how
the depiction of it continues to fascinate
us. We will look at artists past and present including Rembrandt, Titian, Goya,
Hockney, Freud, Alice Neel and many more.
This intensive two day drawing course
gives students the opportunity to express
the feeling of bodily movement and their
response to it, through drawing. The model,
a dancer, will perform a range of dances and
movements to music. Through a series of
drawings, students will capture the essence
of the different dances, their gestural language and their artistic response to them.
The challenge of capturing movement
will lead to new and transformative mark
making.
Introduction to Printmaking: Monoprint,
Lino and Collagraphs
Sam Marshall
10 am – 4 pm / 2 days (27 – 28 Jun)
£75
Over this two day course, students will
explore the power of the printed image.
A variety of printmaking techniques will
be investigated, many of which can be
recreated at home for further practice.
Students will experiment with creating
a variety of effects using monoprint and
collagraph, and be introduced to Linocut
using Japanese Vinyl and Reduction
Linocut. They will work on designs in both
colour and black and white, and learn how
to hand-burnish work prior to printing.
The course culminates with students printing an edition run of their work.
Students are advised to bring along either
a smartphone or a laptop and camera and
will be advised on appropriate and affordable software to be downloaded such as
Animate It and iStopMotion HD.

the Royal Drawing School runs daytime and
evening drawing courses from our studios
in East London, Royal Drawing School
Shoreditch and at Royal Drawing School
West in South Kensington as part of our
Public Courses programme.
The Royal Drawing School also delivers a
one year postgraduate programme, The
Drawing Year, and a fine art foundation
course, The Foundation Year.
For young artists the School operates a
programme of scholarship and fee paying

See overleaf for full details.
ROYAL DRAWING
SCHOOL SHOREDITCH
The Royal Drawing School runs daytime and evening courses in
drawing suitable for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced artists and creative professionals. Our Shoreditch studios
were the first home of the Royal Drawing School when it was founded
as The Prince’s Drawing School in 2000.
Royal Drawing School Shoreditch is our main programme with over
38 daytime and evening drawing courses run from these studios
every term. Over the years we have established a distinguished faculty
of over 55 drawing tutors, all of whom are practising artists.
Courses at the Royal Drawing School are divided into three main areas:
Drawing in the Studio, Drawing from Art, and Drawing London. There
are also specific courses designed to investigate the role of imagination
in drawing from observation. Students are encouraged to explore all
of these areas, as they complement each other and contribute towards
seeing, drawing and learning in new ways.
There are three terms throughout the year with each course lasting
one term. Term time courses run for one day or evening a week
for 10 consecutive weeks. There are also intensive 5 day holiday
courses that run during the Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays.
Studio-based courses run from our top floor converted Victorian warehouse in Shoreditch and Out of House courses take students out to
draw in London’s museums, galleries, streets and green spaces. The
Shoreditch programme also includes printmaking courses that run from
the on-site intaglio print room and art history lectures and in-conversations with contemporary artists on Wednesday nights. On Monday
evenings there are free Life Drawing and Etching courses and on Fridays
there is a free Drawing from Art course for London Art Students.
All of our course rates are subsidised and we also offer a comprehensive concessions scheme with discounts from 10% to 75% making
our courses accessible to the widest range of students possible.

ROYAL DRAWING
SCHOOL WEST
The School opened its west London base at Sydney Close Studios
in South Kensington in 2013, where we run public courses in
drawing, painting and sculpture. The programme’s Out of House
courses also makes use of West London’s rich resources, from
Kew Gardens to the V&A Museum.
Sydney Close Studios is a large purpose-built Victorian studio with
double-height vaulted ceilings and lots of natural light.
Our presence at Sydney Close is the result of a collaboration with
the Machin Arts Foundation, the legacy of the late sculptor Arnold
Machin, who used the studio from the 1950s until his death in 1999.
Many notable artists and designers have lived and worked in
Sydney Close Studios over the years including John Singer Sargent,
James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Joseph Boehm and Sir Edward
Poynter. The Survey of London also records that Suffragettes
operated a secret press from the cellar of number 5 for a time.
Sydney Close Studios is centrally located just off Fulham Road,
five minutes walk from South Kensington tube station.

students are awarded a full scholarship. A studio space in the iconic
Tea Building in Shoreditch is provided for the duration of the course
and additional maintenance bursaries are available on application.
Students are assessed by an independent board headed by Andrea
Rose, who was Director of Visual Arts at the British Council for over
20 years, and receive a postgraduate diploma certificate. The course
is overseen by an academic board chaired by Christopher Le Brun,
President of the Royal Academy.
Every course offered at the School is taught at postgraduate level
by a distinguished faculty of practising artists. We are one of only
a few institutions in the world offering in-depth, quality tuition
for those who wish to develop their observational drawing skills.
The application deadline for entry in September 2015 is 30 March

The Drawing Clubs for young artists provide serious, sustained tuition
and mentoring for children aged 10 – 18, who have a passion or aptitude
for drawing. We run Saturday courses that are open to all and
an outreach programme of after school clubs with partner schools.
Public Course: Saturday Drawing Courses
These Saturday courses are delivered by
professional artists who are alumni of The
Drawing Year postgraduate programme at
the Royal Drawing School. Through a range
of challenging drawing exercises students
will explore diverse materials, techniques
and subject matter. Dedicated students will
be able to enhance their art attainment in
school or college. Students will also have
access to the exhibition programmes at the
Saatchi or Whitechapel Galleries.
Summer term runs from 2 May to 4 July
2015 with no half term break. Book courses
online at www.royaldrawingschool.org.
Enquiries can be made either by email to
[email protected]
or calling 020 7613 8559.
