Overview:
The Optimist’s Scholarship is awarded to a COCC-bound Senior who demonstrates a
lifestyle of optimism, a great attitude, and kindness to others. An individual who possesses
the qualities as described in the Dutch Creed (pg. 2) as well as meets the qualifications and
requirements listed below will be selected for this one-time scholarship.
Qualifications:
• 2015 graduating Senior
• Attending COCC in the fall of 2015
• 2.75+ GPA
• Currently enrolled at Redmond Proficiency Academy (High School) and in good
standing
Requirements:
• Complete the following application.
• Obtain one recommendation via the Scholarship Reference Form (attached). This is
to be sealed and submitted by the person giving the recommendation.
• Complete the essay questions.
• Obtain and submit a current academic transcript (unofficial copy okay).
• Submit by stated deadline.
Scholarship Award:
• A one-time $500 academic scholarship to be used towards 2015/2016 tuition at
Central Oregon Community College. *NOTE: Redmond Seniors: This scholarship can be
deferred until your sophomore year if you are obtaining an advanced diploma.

One winner from each of the Bend/LaPine, Redmond, and Sisters high schools.
Scholarship will be awarded to an individual who lives the “Dutch Creed” as
demonstrated through the essay and letter of recommendation. Financial need,
community service/volunteer work, GPA, and educational goals will also determine
the recipient of the scholarship award.

Essay Questions
A large factor of determination for this scholarship is the student’s display of an optimistic,
enthusiastic, and inspiring attitude. The ability to demonstrate how his or her lifestyle
matches the characteristics described in the Dutch Creed through the essay along with the
letter of recommendation will play an important role in our decision.
Please answer the following questions. Essays should be word-processed, doublespaced, and attached to the application.
1. Read the Dutch Creed (pg. 2) and describes how you personally live a lifestyle that
mirrors the Dutch Creed. Cite specific examples of how the traits in the creed are visible
and reflected in your life. No more than 500 words.
2. Tell us about your future education and career goals. What are your areas of
interest/study? What kinds of careers are you interested in, and why? What goals have you
set for yourself? No more than 200 words.
3. Please list any extracurricular activities you have been involved in the past two years. Be
sure to include any positions in leadership or as a team captain. If you wish to include any
more info. please do so here.
