What is GHS? What does GHS change? Who needs GHS

What is GHS?
Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), is a globalized system
created to improve clarity as well as improve efficiency with the classification of hazardous materials.
What does GHS change?
With GHS in place, organizations must comply with a standardized system that does not change
between countries or regions. This means that many organizations will have to update and change their
hazardous material systems currently in place. The areas of change include:



Training
Labeling
Safety Data Sheets
Failure to make the necessary changes within these areas will result in moderate to severe penalties.
Who needs GHS?
Under the GHS system there are currently ten classes of health hazards in addition to sixteen classes of
physical hazards; which can be read in detail through the Canadian Center of Occupational Health and
Safety.
