Dear Supporters and Friends of PLS, A new year begins and it allows us to review 2014, which was a very good year. We can’t stop thinking about tomorrow as we continue to provide services for those seeking our assistance. YOU have been such a blessing to the beautiful births this past year, 13 babies, and over 7,052 bed nights. Celebrating our 25th Anniversary and honoring Theresa Sherrin, our Founder, along with her entire family we recounted through our residents’ sharing their stories how you have helped us develop a safe environment for them. Our Annual Affair of the Heart”, “Sea” Hope Happening” will be held at The Waterfront Hilton Resort in Huntington Beach on March 21, 2015. All proceeds will benefit the acquisition and development of our newly acquired property. We can’t stop thinking about tomorrow and where our graduates can find a “reasonable” place to live. We have dreamed for some time about having those “reasonable” units for them and their children. Because of your support, donations, and our diligent stewardship of those gifts will NOW be able to provide reasonable units for working graduates and their children. We will keep you informed as our development process moves forward throughout 2015. We invite you to share our dream with those you know, so we can build the units here in Los Alamitos. A major highlight is our Volunteer Recognition Tea where we honor and celebrate YOU. This past year there were 11 individuals who were honored for 25 years of service. We are blessed and grateful and always in need of volunteers. Our “Tee Off for the Heart¯” golf tournament was a banner success, coordinated by Jean Barbazette and Michelle Gath. September 16, 2015 they will plan to out do themselves and we hope you will join us. You as supporters and volunteers have made HOPE HAPPEN. We ask YOU to dream along with us as we watch our women and their children continue to have a place to reach their goals and help their little ones have dreams of their own. Date to be announced for fall 2015. “A Taste of Precious Life” ~ Santa Maria BBQ style will be on July 26, 2015. Dave Cardona and crew will entice your taste buds. Our jewel at 3622 Florista continues to dazzle all of us. The Thrift & Gift Shop had a banner year overseen by the Shop Coordinator, Griselda Mendez, and our outside help by Jim Cazares. The thousands of volunteer hours provided by our wonderful shop volunteers continues to enhance our efforts to make a difference in the lives of those we serve and beyond. They were impressed with the layout and how it flowed with the women’s needs in mind, and how clean and orderly everything was kept. We do require our Residents to keep their living areas cleaned and in good order. But we are so BLESSED by volunteers that come and do DEEP cleaning on a regular basis. They reach high, wash windows and move heavy things we wouldn’t ask our residents to do So behind the scenes we have so many helping hands that make our Program possible. Most people don’t see them. They just show up and do their jobs. Our Program for the Open House listed Churches and organizations that sponsored and decorated different rooms at the Shelter to have us ready for Christmas. After the Open House, others came forward to help put on a Christmas Party for the moms and babies; others donated gifts so they would have a REAL CHRISTMAS, some for the first time. Well, the holidays are over and yes we have more “Behind the Scenes” volunteers taking down all of the decorations and putting them in storage. If you saw our decorations, you know that this is no small job! I want to sing the Praises of all of our VOLUNTEERS that come to serve and are happy being “Behind the Scenes” for the benefit of the moms, babies and the Shelter. RESIDENT’S CORNER RESIDENT’S COR“My name is Tasheonne and I recently gave birth to a baby boy named KorDeyll Roberson. I arrived at Precious Life Shelter October 15, 2014, and I was already 8 months pregnant. Before I came to Precious Life I was homeless, living on the streets in the Riverside area, staying in family members cars, and jumping from hotel to hotel. The father of my baby kicked me out in the streets and put a restraining order on me and my unborn child. When that happened I turned to drugs and started smoking weed and cigarettes. Then I went back to my home town “Los Angeles” to stop doing drugs and to get myself together but I still had one problem, I had no place to stay. So one day my mom handed me her phone and unknowingly to me was Precious Life Shelter and they had an open bed. I had never heard of Precious Life and I was scared but I didn’t want to lose my baby. When I arrived, it was a battle for me, getting used to the rules and structure, but in the end it’s all worth it. I was attending all types of classes like parenting, domestic violence, breast feeding, anger management, arts and crafts, budgeting and more. They taught me how to be a better me and a perfect mom. They have very nice staff and volunteers. They help with things that you need from getting a job, clothes, diapers for baby and other necessities that you might need. Residents enjoyed singing Christmas Carols, playing games, good food and entertainment by the International Children’s Choir. We would like to thank Nick’s Deli, Great Mex Grill and Creative Cakery for providing the delicious food, and D’Aversa for the lovely gifts. Thank you Kim, and your helpers for all your hard work and dedication to help make the holidays a memorable experience for PLS women and babies. The International Children’s Choir made a surprise visit to sing carols to the residents. Wow! They were great!
