REAR ADMIRAL FRED M. MIDGETTE
COMMANDER, NINTH COAST GUARD DISTRICT
Rear Admiral Fred Midgette assumed duty as the Ninth
Coast Guard District Commander in June 2013. He is the
senior operational commander in the Great Lakes and
Saint Lawrence Seaway - an area that encompasses
eight states, a 1500-mile international border, and a
workforce of over six thousand active, reserve, civilian,
and auxiliary Coast Guardsmen. He previously served as
Military Advisor to the Secretary of Homeland Security
where he supported the Secretary in affairs relating to
the coordination and execution of policy and
operations between the Department of Homeland
Security and the Department of Defense.

Rear Admiral Midgette is the 14th Gold Ancient Mariner of the Coast Guard.
The Gold Ancient Mariner is an honorary position held by an officer with over
ten years of cumulative sea duty who has held the qualification as a Cutterman
longer than any other officer.
He has been assigned to the Pentagon on the Joint Staff (J-7); as a liaison officer
to the U.S. Customs Service in Washington, DC; as the Executive Assistant to the
Assistant Commandant for Operations at Coast Guard Headquarters,
Washington, DC; and as the Coast Guard’s Liaison Officer to US Northern
Command in Colorado Springs, CO. He has also served in shore assignments as a
Company Officer at the Coast Guard Academy and on the Training Infrastructure
Study and Streamlining Implementation Team at Coast Guard Headquarters.
Rear Admiral Midgette is a native of Virginia Beach, VA and he holds a Bachelor
of Science in Civil Engineering (Coast Guard Academy), a Masters of Science in
Management (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), and a Master of Arts in National
Security and Strategic Studies (Naval War College).
He is married to the former Mary M. Murphy of Dewitt, Michigan and they have
two children, Matthew and Maggie.
