Sixth Sunday of Easter
The Holy Spirit Still Guides Us
In today’s First Reading from the Acts of the
Apostles, we find examples of the Holy Spirit
guiding the early Church. The Holy Spirit gave St. Peter a
vision to help him understand that he was to accept a former
pagan (Cornelius) into the new Christian community. • The
Responsorial Psalm 98, continues the theme of God guiding
the Church in the early days with the Apostles missionary
efforts. They soon came to realize that God wants the Good
News preached to all people, not just the Jewish nation. The
refrain celebrates God reaching out to those not part of the
original covenant; a new covenant is established between God
and all peoples, so all are invited to sing His praise. • Today’s
Second Reading centers on love as the outpouring of oneself
in service of others. God sets the first example by sending His
only Son Jesus to die out of love for us. This is the true meaning
of love, not a feeling but a choice. • Today’s Gospel also focuses
on true love. God loved us so much that in the person of Jesus
He laid down His life for us. This death brought us the gift of
the Holy Spirit to help us live His example of love in giving of
ourselves to others. It is a choice, a decision we make to follow
and emulate Christ; it is not a feeling. We are now part of an
intimate relationship with God; we are no longer slaves but
friends. Through Jesus’ death and by the Holy Spirit’s action
in the sacraments and in the Church, God gives us the strength
to be His children, His friends.
New Testament Study Group
The next meeting is Thursday, May 14th in the Parish Hall at
1:00 p.m. The assignment is Ephesians, Philippians, and
Colossians. New members are always welcome. For
information call Marie Schumacher at 453-1565 or Tom Slakey
at 455-7186.
St. Mary Parish: The Rosary-Chain of Hope
Our neighbor, St. Mary’s, is praying a Scriptural Rosary during
the month of May. The Scriptural Rosary will be prayed on
the following Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.: May 12th, 19th,
and 26th. All are welcome!
Prayer of the Week
God our Father, maker of all, the crown of your
creation was the Son of Man, born of a woman,
but without beginning; he suffered for us but lives forever.
May our mortal lives be crowned with the ultimate joy of rising
with him, who is Lord forever and ever.
May: Mary’s Month
Mary, foremost among the saints, has a special place in the story
of salvation history. Her role in the Church flows and is
inseparable from her union with her son. Her “yes” at the
annunciation consented to the Lord’s Incarnation, thus
collaborating with her Son’s work from the beginning. • The
New Testament reports that she was singled out and graced by
God for the special and unique privilege of being the mother of
the Savior. Not fully understanding how she—an unmarried
woman—was to conceive a child, she became the perfect symbol
of faith when she said yes to the invitation to bear God’s Son.
With her husband, Joseph, Mary raised Jesus in a loving, prayerfilled home, teaching and caring for him. • When Jesus launched
his public ministry, Mary faithfully witnessed and supported
him. With courage and sorrow in her heart, she stood at the foot
of the cross in Jesus’ dying moments. Finally, the Bible tells us
that Mary was with the apostles praying in the upper room after
Jesus’ resurrection, expectantly awaiting the descent of the Holy
Spirit. The Church teaches that Mary is the greatest Christian
saint. She is the perfect model of Christian faith and love because
she obeyed the Father’s will, cooperated with her son’s
redemptive work, and responded to the graces of the Holy Spirit.
First Saturday Devotion
The First Saturday devotion originated as a result of Mary’s
appearances to the children at Fatima in Portugal in 1917. The
devotion consists of the celebration of the sacrament of
reconciliation/penance, receiving Holy Communion on the first
Saturday of five consecutive months, reciting five decades of
the Rosary, and meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary for
fifteen minutes. This practice is offered to God for the intention
of the conversion of sinners and in reparation for sin.

Icon of St. Jude
Meetings & Events
As you may know, Sister Anne Sekul, raised
in the parish and educated at Sacred Heart School, is a Sister
of Mercy and a gifted iconographer. We have commissioned
Sister Anne to “write” (paint) an icon of St. Jude for our church.
The icon will be hung in the St. Ann Chapel on the wall above
the votive candle stand. • It has been said that the finished
icon is the result of the prayers of the iconographer and the
community who will receive the icon seeking the intercession
of St. Jude. Parishioners are invited to join Sr. Anne in praying
that the Holy Spirit will guide her hand as she writes this sacred
image of St. Jude, patron saint of the desperate.

Please Join Us in Honoring Ms. Taricco
After more than 40 years of total dedication to Catholic
education, Ms. Taricco, our 3rd grade teacher, is retiring! We
will be honoring Ms. Taricco on Sunday, May 17th at the 9:30
a.m. Family Mass. • A reception will follow in the school
cafeteria until 12:30 p.m. Please join us in thanking her for
her dedicated service by coming to Mass and attending the
reception. Please spread the word to alumni that you may
know. All are welcome!
Catholic Communications
Collection
Next weekend’s collection is for the Catholic Communication
Campaign (CCC). Through your generous donations, CCC is
able to spread the gospel message in our community and all
over the world. CCC funds the development of traditional
and new media programs that inspire and minister to their
audiences. Half of the collection from our diocese stays here
to support local communication efforts, while the other half
supports national Catholic media initiatives. Please give
generously in next week’s Collection to help spread the Good
News. • To find out more about the work of CCC, please visit

Sacred Heart Altar Society
Monday, May 18th a basketball game will be at Christian
Brothers High School. Come and cheer for your favorite team!
Please invite friends, family and other members of your
community to this fun and exciting event. • You may purchase
tickets on line at http://bit.ly./sacclassic or call 733-0258. Doors
open at 6:30 p.m.
Parishioners are invited to the Altar Society’s bi-monthly
meeting on Friday, May 15th at 10:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall.
This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Altar
Society and its many good works in support of the liturgical
life of the Parish. • The Altar Society acknowledges and
expresses its gratitude to Linda Rutherford and Mary
Domyancic for their donation and care of the altar flowers for
the month of May. While we see and appreciate the flowers
on the Blessed Sacrament Altar every weekend, we may fail to
realize the number of trips to the church those who care for
them make during the week to make sure the flowers are
watered and refreshed. Thank you, Linda and Mary!
Mother’s Day Dinner Prayer
Sacramento Food Bank Services
Sacramento Classic: Diocesan Priests vs.
Seminarians
Loving Lord, as we gather around our family table on this
Mother’s Day, we ask your special blessing our mother. Her
presence brings light and warmth to our lives and we thank
you for giving her to us. We know her care for us has been
constant. She has enlightened us at some of the most difficult
times in our family life. Lord, now bless her with the same
consolation that your Mother received during her life. • Lord,
your mother Mary found joy in her motherhood and when she
discovered God’s will for her she announced: “My soul
proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit rejoices in
God my Savior.” • We pray that this same happiness will come
upon our own mother as we honor her today at this Mother’s
Day dinner. Lord, protect our mother and give her all the grace
she needs to serve you in good health and peace. Bless each
of us around this table and keep us united in mutual respect
and love for one another. Bless the food we are about to share.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The last weekend of every month, we collect non-perishable
foods to help the less fortunate through the Sacramento Food
Bank Services. Please bring your donated items and place
them inside the altar rail before Mass. The items are taken to
the Food Bank on Monday morning for immediate distribution.
We encourage all parishioners to participate in this special
outreach program to those in need in our community. Your
donations do make a difference.
Healthcare providers are invited…
“Healthcare as Vocation of Commitment”,
presented by Dr. Hai Tran and distinguished guest speakers.
The program will be on Thursday, May 21st and Friday, May
22nd at 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., at Christ the King Passionist
Retreat Center.
Please call 505-6288 or visit
