MODERNISATION IN THE NORTHERN
SAVANNAH ECOLOGICAL ZONE (THE
SADA ZONE)

AGRICULTURAL POTENTIALS IN THE NORTHERN
SAVANNAH ECOLOGICAL ZONE (NSEZ)
• The state of agriculture in the NSEZ is characterized
by a number of factors including the availability of
land; comparative advantage in the production of
particular crops like all the cereals, legumes,
vegetables and cash crops such as cashew, cotton,
mangos and other native fruit trees; untapped
potential for livestock production; and a developing
trend towards commercialization.
• Generally low population density and therefore has
the potential to increase agricultural productivity
through land expansion.
• The agro-ecology, in general, supports a wide range
of arable crops; and the flat or gently undulating
nature of the land is suitable for mechanized
farming.
• Three main river systems and several tributaries that
flow through the SADA zone with considerably large
underground water potentials suitable for irrigation
investment in various growth poles identified in the
zone.
• The SADA zone has a wealth of under-utilized well
endowed land to support an intensified agriculture
modernization program. Especially the lowlands and
inland valleys that are under exploited.
• The arable land potential is approximately 6.1 million
hectares suitable for the cultivation of cereals, legumes,
tubers, cash crops such as cotton, cashew, mangoes etc.
Out of that only 1.5 million hectares are cultivated
contributing.
• It is the home to the shea tree. An industry which is
largely untapped but has huge potentials in the oil
industry and a big catalyst to rural poverty alleviation.
• It is also home to Boabab tree – the tree where every bit
is useful – iron rich leaves, flour for delicious juice, seeds
for animal feed and oil, the trunk for all-year round bee
keeping.
• The zone has huge potential for the development of
the livestock industry due to its topology, vegetation
and other climatic factors. This sector is hugely
undeveloped with lots of opportunities
• Some of the agricultural growth poles include a
network of river basins with highly fertile valleys of
the Volta and Sissili rivers, the Fumbisi valley, Nasia,
Tamne, Katanga, Naboggu, and Soo valleys have a
combined land span of approximately 100 – 120
thousand hectares suitable for both rain fed and
irrigated rice cultivation. These areas can become
major agricultural production zones for different
crops as shown on the maps below.
