From the Pastor
Today we celebrate Mother’s Day, a day to honor our mothers. Historically in Europe
it was celebrated in Lent giving honor to Our Lady, the Mother of God, Jesus. After
the religious service, then mothers were honored. Since the U.S.A. is a very young
country, historical records show the holiday was founded after the Civil War in 1870.
Miss Julia Howe was the first person in the U.S. to recognize the need for a Mother's
Day holiday. She was successful in raising awareness among the masses and pushing
her pleadings to the upper echelons of power. Following this very potent Proclamation
made in 1870, the Mothers' Peace Day Observance was held on the second Sunday in
June 1872. Such observances began to take place each year thereafter and paved the
way for the Mother's Day Holiday in the U.S. on the second Sunday of May.
Mrs. Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis, an activist and social worker, used to express her
desire that someday someone must honor all mothers, living and dead, and pay tribute
to the contributions made by them. Her work was successful; by 1911, Mother's Day
was celebrated in almost every State in the Union, and on May 8, 1914 President
Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as
Mother's Day. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in several countries, including
United States, United Kingdom, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia,
Mexico, Canada, China, Japan and Belgium. People take the day as an opportunity to
pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support.
In the United States, carnations are the flower of Mother’s Day; it is the flower Mrs.
Jarvis gave to her mother. In the Catholic tradition, roses are the flowers of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. The Sunday of 1,000 Roses pamphlet explained why today the
altar is adorned with roses - the flower Saint Anne gave to her daughter, Mary.

Youth Ministry
Since Mary is so closely associated with roses, a traditional prayer that people pray to
her while reflecting on the earthly life of her son, Jesus Christ, is called the Rosary.
Mary has encouraged people to pray the Rosary during some of her apparitions
worldwide, people have reported. The Rosary, which means "crown of roses,"
involves offering a group of prayers to Mary like a spiritual bouquet. In the narthex
during the month of May, blessed Rosaries will be available. They are made by the
Rosary and Prayer Shawl ministry of the Parish, which meets every Thursday morning.
They wish you to take one and start reciting the Rosary.

Prayer to Mary, the Mother of God, on Mother’s Day:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone
who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left
unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my
Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of
the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer
me. Amen.
Happy Mother’s Day.
Yours in Christ,
Father John

Ushers & Usherettes
Use your “people skills” to greet people as they arrive for Mass, find them a pew
as needed, pass collection baskets, distribute bulletins, tidy the church before
and after Mass.
Coffee & Donuts
If you enjoy meeting people, this ministry is for you! Socialize over a cup of
coffee after the 8 and/or 10 AM Masses. A welcoming word and listening ear
go a long way. We are looking for friendly, reliable people who enjoy working
in teams. Training provided.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
If you are an adult and practicing Catholic in good standing, consider serving
by visiting the homebound and assisting the clergy to distribute Communion at
Mass. Deacon Pat will hold a training session on Tuesday, May 12, at 9 AM in
church. Training is also open to those who missed their 2015 required annual
EMHC training.
Ministry to the Sick
The demand for Eucharistic Ministers to bring Holy Communion to the
homebound after weekend Masses is growing. Please consider giving an hour
after Mass to visit. Adults in good standing must be trained to be an
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, pass a background check, and
complete Safe Environment Training.
Contact Linda in the Parish Office for more information or to volunteer.

The “Friends of the Poor” Walk
HONORING THE MILITARY
St. Vincent’s only fundraiser is its annual “Friends of the Poor” Walk which
last year raised $9,100.00. That money has been disbursed and we must
do it again, only bigger, beNer, and louder! To do that, we need the help
of everyone, big and small. Come join us and show that Christ’s command
to “love your neighbor” is an important demonstra>on of your personal
faith.
It’s time to update our military honor
roll. If you or a family member are not
already listed on our military honor roll
that will be displayed in the narthex over
the Memorial Day holiday, contact the
Parish Office with the name and branch

Involve youth groups and sports teams
Join teams who will visit and solicit businesses
Help with support and administra,ve func, ons
Please don’t be shy; join us and bring a friend, have some fun. If you can

Santa Ana,
Tales observancias empezaron a tener
acogedlas benignamente. Amén.
Feliz Día de las Madres.
Suyos en Cristo,
Padre John
