Historically in Europe it was celebrated in Lent giving honor to Our Lady, the Mother of God, Jesus. After the religious service, then mothers were honored. Since the U.S.A. is a very young country, historical records show the holiday was founded after the Civil War in 1870. Miss Julia Howe was the first person in the U.S. to recognize the need for a Mother's Day holiday. She was successful in raising awareness among the masses and pushing her pleadings to the upper echelons of power. Following this very potent Proclamation made in 1870, the Mothers' Peace Day Observance was held on the second Sunday in June 1872. Such observances began to take place each year thereafter and paved the way for the Mother's Day Holiday in the U.S. on the second Sunday of May. Mrs. Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis, an activist and social worker, used to express her desire that someday someone must honor all mothers, living and dead, and pay tribute to the contributions made by them. Her work was successful; by 1911, Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every State in the Union, and on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in several countries, including United States, United Kingdom, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan and Belgium. People take the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support. In the United States, carnations are the flower of Mother’s Day; it is the flower Mrs. Jarvis gave to her mother. In the Catholic tradition, roses are the flowers of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Sunday of 1,000 Roses pamphlet explained why today the altar is adorned with roses - the flower Saint Anne gave to her daughter, Mary. [email protected] Regina Poirier Faith Formation Cindy Cyman, Coordinator [email protected] Michelle Melendez Youth Ministry Since Mary is so closely associated with roses, a traditional prayer that people pray to her while reflecting on the earthly life of her son, Jesus Christ, is called the Rosary. Mary has encouraged people to pray the Rosary during some of her apparitions worldwide, people have reported. The Rosary, which means "crown of roses," involves offering a group of prayers to Mary like a spiritual bouquet. In the narthex during the month of May, blessed Rosaries will be available. They are made by the Rosary and Prayer Shawl ministry of the Parish, which meets every Thursday morning. They wish you to take one and start reciting the Rosary. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. Happy Mother’s Day.
