Tripolone Mary A. Sole Philip John Porter Concetta (Connie) Russo Louisa Dionisio Joseph P. Larkin “But whoever lives the truth comes to the light.” Think about the sun for a moment. The light from this gigantic celestial orb provides so many things for us. Most obviously, it provides brightness by which we see, by which we work, play, and navigate the world around us. It also provides the warmth necessary for our comfort and our survival. The sun sustains plant life, which in turn sustains our lives as well. It helps us mark the passing of time, the change of seasons, and the rhythm of every day. The sun is a tremendous gift from God, and our lives—just like our planet—quite literally revolve around it. BAPTISMS Aidan Charles Cummings Joseph Max DeAngelis Juliet Oliva Giovacco Miabella Nichole Cooper Connie Ruconich When Jesus uses the image of light in today’s Gospel, it may help us to understand him if we think of the sun. Just as this magnificent star nourishes our physical existence, so too Jesus, “the light [who] came into the world,” nourishes our spiritual existence. He gives us the “brightness” to see the right choices in front of us through his teaching and his example. He warms our hearts through his mercy and forgiveness, changing our coldhearted sinfulness into burning charity. He sustains our spiritual lives by offering us the gift of salvation: eternal life in heaven that never sees death. And he helps us mark the passing of time as we grow ever closer to him, entering more and more deeply into the knowledge and love of our Lord. But of course, just as we are free to hide in a dark room with the shades drawn, so too we are free to “shade” ourselves from the light of Christ: “for everyone who does wicked things hates the light.” To choose wickedness is to cut ourselves off not just from light, but from life. May we choose instead to stay always in the light of the Son. -3- Pastor’s Page March 15, 2015 Dear Parishioners, On March 1st, a portion of the Pastoral Transition Team Report identifying communication concerns was published in the Parish Bulletin and I would like to follow-up on specific issues related to the Finance Committee. I assure all parishioners that an annual Stewardship Report, which discloses revenues and expenditures, has been distributed at all Masses following the end of each fiscal year. This has been done every year for at least twenty-four years. When appropriate, a footnote has been included that cash deficits were funded using Parish reserves. In addition, the operations and finances of our Parish have been audited by the Diocese of Rockville Centre, most recently in May 2014. There have been no significant findings and all audit comments have been addressed by the Pastor and Finance Committee. The Finance Committee serves in an advisory capacity and is in the process of finding new and more effective ways to communicate financial information to all parishioners. The management of parish funds, including publishing of the Stewardship Report, is solely my responsibility as pastor. It is not the responsibility of the Finance Committee or any of its members. Fr. Joe __________________________________________________________________________________________ I am publishing a section of the Pastoral Transition Team Report each week. Some items have already been addressed or are being addressed. However, the report is being published as it was submitted. Going forward, we will publish progress reports. Two weeks ago we looked at Communication Concerns. The next section of the Pastoral Transition Team Report is Summary Part 1: Transition Team Final Report December 2014 Summary Part 1: The Transition Team thoroughly reviewed the responses from our parishioners, carefully reflecting on each concern and recommendation. We have compiled this report in consideration of all of the responses but have tried to represent the recurrent themes that were expressed. Overall, the parishioners are seeking a more welcoming, inclusive parish with opportunities for spiritual growth and development. * The homilies offered at Mass should be a meaningful source of reflection and spiritual growth. They should be a reasonable length (8-10 minutes for the most part), intelligible, and help the parishioners understand the Word of God as it relates to their daily lives. * The sound system needs to be reviewed, evaluated, and improved. The sound produced throughout the church is uneven, adding to the difficulty of hearing the priest during Mass. * A Social Committee should be established to enhance the welcoming aspect of our parish and to plan events that are inclusive. The parish should offer more socialization opportunities for families, singles, youth, middle aged, and seniors. Our church should be a comfortable meeting place, a loving community where people can enjoy each other's company and also have fun. * We need to provide a Spanish Mass to meet the needs of our Hispanic Community. * Special Needs Faith Formation needs to be developed further with the possibility of a Special Needs Mass on a monthly basis, and perhaps development of a Respite program. * Parishioners are seeking better communication between the priests, the people, and the ministries. There should be openness with the Finance Committee, the Pastoral Council, and the parishioners. The clerical staff should be approachable and responsive. Thanks for your continuing support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Fr. Joe -4- Sacrificial Giving 2015 Did We Take a Step? They were put in groups of two to four students. Using The Stock Market Game, the children explored the fundamentals of personal finance and investing, while practicing content and skills in math, English Language Arts, economics, social studies, and other subjects. Working together to build and manage an investment portfolio in a real-world and dynamic marketplace. They analyzed and made decisions, explored the consequences of their choices, and found new ways to strategize for success. The students learned critical problem solving and money management skills while having lots of fun. The Stock Market Game is a national competition that is broken down into regions. Trinity Regional School had second and third place winning teams in The Stock Market Game. The children worked very hard and strategized to achieve this goal. The Stock Market Game is part of the SIFMA Foundation, which also hosts a writing competition for the children to participate in. All 46 fifth grade students participated in the InvestWrite competition. InvestWrite challenges fourth through twelfth grade students to analyze an investment scenario and recommend portfolio allocations targeting short - and long - term financial goals. The competition serves a culminating activity for nearly 600,000 students nationwide who compete in the The Stock Market Game program each year. At Trinity Regional School we have a student that won third place in the national competition and first place in the state competition. Jack Nixon is among 20,000 students nationwide who take the InvestWrite challenge each year. It takes years to build up the financial savvy to navigate the markets, but Jack Nixon is decades ahead of the game. We are very proud of Jack and all the fifth grade students at Trinity Regional School for their hard work and stepping up to the challenge. -10- WHILE fasting with the body, brothers and sisters, let us also fast in spirit. Let us loose every bond of iniquity; let us undo the knots of every contract made by violence; let us tear up all unjust agreements; let us give bread to the hungry and welcome to our house the poor who have no roof to cover them, that we may receive mercy from Christ our God. --Byzantine Vespers Lenten Retreat At St. Anthony’s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday March 23, 24, 25 – DO GOOD, and evil will not overtake you. Prayer with fasting is good, but better than both is almsgiving with righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than wealth with wrongdoing. It is better to give alms than to lay up gold. For almsgiving saves you from death and purges away every sin. —Tobit 12:8-10 9 AM and 7:30 PM Fr. Sean Davidson, Director Fr. Sean is a member of the Missionaries of the Most Holy Eucharist, a new clerical association based in southeast France. Born in London, England he spent much of his childhood and youth in Ireland. He entered the priesthood in 2004 and this call was accompanied by a strong desire to make Jesus in the Eucharist known and loved. He made the decision to go to France to assist in establishing a missionary community of priests dedicated to this end. He was ordained a priest on the feast of Corpus Christi in 2011 in France. -11- THEREFORE, as we are about to celebrate that most eminent of all mysteries, in which the blood of Jesus Christ has wiped away all sins, let us first of all prepare to offer the sacrifice of mercy, so that what we have been given by God we may ourselves show to those who have trespassed against us. We must show more liberal bounty toward the poor and those who suffer from all kinds of affliction in order that many voices may give thanks to God and that the relief of those in need may support our fasts. Indeed, no other devotion of the faithful is more pleasing to the Lord than that which is directed toward the poor. — St. Leo, Fifth Century p rayer consists of attention. It is the orientation of all attention of which the soul is capable toward God. The quality of the attention counts for much in the quality of prayer. Warmth of heart cannot make up for it. The highest part of the attention only makes contact with God when prayer is intense and pure enough for such a contact to be established; but the whole attention is turned toward God. —Simone Weil WHEN we pray, we are not to pray for ourselves alone. We do not say, “My Father, who art in heaven” or, “Give me this day my daily bread”; we do not ask for own trespasses alone to be forgiven; and when we pray that we may be delivered from evil, are not praying only for ourselves either. Our prayer is for the general Good, for the common good. When we pray, we do not pray for our own single selves; we pray for all God’s people, because they we are one. — Cyprian of Carthage, Third Century THERE are as many ways to pray as there are moments in life. Sometimes we seek out a quiet spot and want to be alone, sometimes we look for a friend and want to be together. Sometimes we like a book, sometimes we prefer music. Sometimes we want to sing out with hundreds, sometimes only whisper with a few. Sometimes we want to say it with words, sometimes in deep silence. In these moments, we gradually make our lives more of a prayer as we open our hands to be led by God even to places we would rather not go. — Henri Nouwen Lenten Regulations Fast and Abstinence: All Catholics who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine inclusive are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day. Sacrament of Reconciliation During the season of Lent, we prepare to celebrate Our Lord’s resurrection. To put the past behind us and begin a new life, we are called to be reconciled with one another and with God. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an excellent way to respond to God’s call. Confessions are every Saturday from 4 to 4:45 P.M. On the Special Diocesan Day of Reconciliation Monday, March 30th 3 P.M. to 9 P.M. Monday, March 30th at 7 P.M. Mass Wednesday March 18th Father Joe Mirro Wednesday, March 25th Retreat with Fr. Sean Davidson Celebrating Lenten Liturgies at St. Anthony of Padua Parish At St. Anthony’s Parish, we observe the Lenten fast as a preparation for the celebration of Easter and for the renewal of our Baptismal promises. Both the prayer environment in the church and some of the elements of our liturgy are different than they are during the rest of the church year. The simplicity of our prayer environment helps us to focus on what is essential in the presence of Christ in the people that are gathered, in the Word that is proclaimed and the Eucharist that is shared. You will also notice that there are no flowers in the church, another reminder of the simplicity of the season. The dark purple curtains and vestments call us to that simple, yet beautiful posture of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Instead of singing “Alleluia” to announce the Gospel, we will sing instead another verse which praises our Lord for His saving words. Active members share the faith through a variety of face-to-face ministries and spiritual works of mercy. These include teaching religion, bringing Communion to the sick and homebound, praying with the elderly at nursing homes, praying outside abortion mills, and much more. The prayers of the Blessed Mother and our Auxiliary members support our witness and efforts. We also enjoy retreats, days of recollection, and social interaction with other local Legion of Mary groups several times a year. You will learn more about the Catholic faith, help save souls, build friendships, grow in holiness, and help prepare yourself for judgment day. For more information, please call Marie at 631-682-3007. Invite Our Lady of Fatima Pilgrim Statue into your home! In a brief meeting, two members of the Legion of Mary will set up the statue in your home and pray the Rosary with you. You could vote with a tomato, but confession immediately afterwards would be mandatory. And we don’t have a bank of 1-900 numbers to call in our votes (besides, our receptionists would go berserk). So, we’ll be using the old-fashioned but reliable ticket system. Each ticket will equal one vote and cost one dollar. A civilized and Catholic way to support the time and talent of our contestants! The judges’ score will be added to the audience’s votes, which are one dollar per vote. TE!
