We change the whole world by working at the challenges in our own corner of the world. In my personal salvation history, too, my whole life is changed by addressing the need of some part of my life that needs changing right now. What is my work assignment in my community right now? What is the spiritual issue in my life that most needs addressing? Monday, March 30th: pars. 238 - 241 "The Church does not have solutions for every particular issue...(but) she supports those programs which best respond to the dignity of each person and to the common good. In doing this, she proposes in a clear way the fundamental values of human life and convictions which can then find expressions in political activity." (par. 241) What particular political issue gets most of my interest at this time? Do I know what the Church is "proposing" as a way to move in this area? Tuesday, March 31st: pars. 242 - 246 "The credibility of the Christian message would be much greater if Christians could overcome their divisions." (par. 244). And the beginning of the end of the divisions between Christians will be when we focus more on the great deal that we share in common with one another than on the very real and not unimportant things that do divide us. What is it, Who is it, that we share? Wednesday, April 1st: pars. 247 - 254 Do I have family members and friends who belong to non-Christian religions, or who are not religious but who search for the truth and try to live by it? Do I appreciate the truth that they do indeed possess and live by? And do I pray for and long for the day when they will know the fullness of Truth: Jesus, the Way and the Truth and the Life? Thursday, April 2nd: pars. 255 - 258 When I stop to think about it, I'm surprised how many people I know who don't have any religion at all, and who don't seem to feel any need for God in their lives. How would my life be different without God, without faith, without God's People? Friday, April 3rd: oars. 259 - 263 Prayer is never an excuse to avoid the hard work of mission and service! Prayer, if it's genuine, drives us to share our faith and our love. And the demands of our vocation and of our apostolate will drive us often to our knees, to prayer. Where is God calling me to serve right now? When today will I carve out some time to pray? Saturday, April 4th: pars. 264 - 267 "Our infinite sadness can only be cured by an infinite love." (par. 265) Do I let God be healing and consolation and peace for me in the midst of my pain and difficulty and sadness? Have I found a way recently to share the God of Consolation and Peace with others who are in pain and difficulty? Page 4 March 29, 2015 Holy Thursday April 2, 2015 The Mass of the Lord's Supper at 7:30 p.m. Good Friday April 3, 2015 The Proclamation of the Passion, the Veneration of the Cross, and the Distribution of Communion at 12:00 and at 7:00 p.m. Holy Saturday April 4, 2015 The Easter Vigil at 7:30 p.m. Easter Sunday April 5, 2015 Masses at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., and 12:00 Noon. No evening Mass. Who is Responsible for the Crucifixion of Christ? (This answer is from paragraphs 597 and 598 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church The historical complexity of Jesus' trial is apparent in the Gospel accounts. The personal sin of the participants (Judas, the Sanhedrin, Pilate) is known to God alone. Hence we cannot lay responsibility for the trial on the Jews in Jerusalem as a whole, despite the outcry of a manipulated crowd and the global reproach contained in the apostles' call to conversion after Pentecost. Jesus himself, in forgiving them on the cross, and Peter in following suit, both accept "the ignorance" of the Jews of Jerusalem and even of their leaders. Still less can we extend responsibility to other Jews of different times and places, based merely on the crowd's cry: 'His blood be on us and on our children!', a formula for ratifying a judicial sentence. As the Church declared at the Second Vatican Council: 'Neither all the Jews indiscriminately at that time, nor Jews today, can be charged with the crimes committed during his Passion. The Jews should not be spoken of as rejected or accursed as if this followed from Holy Scripture.' In her Magisterial teaching of the faith and in the witness of her saints, the Church has never forgotten that 'sinners were the authors and the ministers of all the sufferings that the divine Redeemer endured.' Taking into account the fact that our sins affect Christ himself, the Church does not hesitate to impute to Christians the gravest responsibility for the torments inflicted upon Jesus, a responsibility with which they have all too often burdened the Jews alone. From the Roman Catechism of the Council of Trent: 'We must regard as guilty all those who continue to relapse into their sins. Since our sins made the Lord Christ suffer the torment of the cross, those who plunge themselves into disorders and crimes crucify the Son of God anew in their hearts (for he is in them) and hold him up to contempt. And it can be seen that our crime in this case is greater in us than in the Jews. As for them, according to the witness of the Apostle, 'None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had they would never have crucified the Lord of glory.' We, however, profess to know him. And, when we deny him by our deeds, we in some way seem to lay violent hands on him.'. Coffee & Donuts on the Patio . . . And, so, our team of volunteers spent January and February measuring the feet of the needy at Oxnard Rescue Mission, Ventura Winter Shelter, and Lighthouse Shelter for Women and Children. The men, women and children served were given a choice of dark or light sneakers, or—for those who work—regular work shoes with nonskid soles. The result was that 237 pairs of shoes were purchased and delivered to the happy recipients by several teams of caring parishioners. May God be with all the people who walk in those shoes AND all the people who volunteered to help them in such a special way: Tim, Mark, Kathy, Karol Ann, Kathleen, Natasha, John and Jackie. Easter Lilies Again, we are inviting all parishioners to join in creating a beautiful and joyful environment in which to celebrate the blessed Easter liturgy by donating Easter lilies. Begin thinking of the dedications you would like to make and how you would like to express them, perhaps by including a picture or drawing. These labels may be created at home before bringing your plant to the church. Please just be sure to confine it to a size that will fit on the pot cover. If you prefer to make your dedication at the donation site, labels will be available for your use. You may bring your lily donations to the stage in the hall on Holy Thursday or Good Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or you may bring them to the church vestibule on Holy Saturday from 8a.m. to 12 noon. We thank you all for your past generosity in making the church reflect the glory of this Holy Season and we hope you will join in making it that way again this year! How about donating it for another round this year! Our Kids Helping Kids ministry has learned that some of the migrant workers in our area have girls attending local high schools who would love to go to the Prom—if only they could afford the formal dress, the shoes and the pretty handbag every girl wants to wear. And we thought maybe some of our girls could make that happen—if they would be willing to part with the stilllovely dresses they wore themselves. If that someone is you, simply bring your dress (or dresses) to the Pastoral Office any time before April 11th. Donations will be given to MICOP, an organization in Oxnard that serves migrant families. Call Rose at 805-217-0154 or our own Sue Cass (818) 735-7946 for more information. Kids Helping Kids A Loaves & Fishes Ministry Why Catholics Aren’t Fundamentalists Fr. Patrick Mullen, Speaker Tuesday, April 14, 2015 6:30:-7:00pm Doors open, refreshments 7:00-8:00pm Presentation Padre Serra Parish, Serra Center Many Christians and others receive their understanding of the Bible from the loudest or most popular commentators on social media, television, or radio, who often take positions that leave people confused and feeling distant from God. Fr. Patrick, scripture scholar, author and popular conference speaker, will help people move from fundamentalist approaches of the bible to a deeper understanding of sacred scripture and a more satisfying interpretation. Fr. Patrick will explain why Catholics do not interpret the bible in a fundamentalist manner. The starting point will be both faith-filled and rational, combining an ongoing trust of the Holy Spirit’s inspiration with genuinely intelligent investigation. The end result will be a renewed – or perhaps first-time – appreciation for and relationship with the word of God. Bring your Bible! Fr. Patrick Mullen is Professor of Biblical Studies at St. John’s Seminary and Pastor of Blessed Junipero Serra (Padre Serra) Parish in Camarillo. He speaks regularly in the United States and internationally about the bible. He received his Doctorate in Biblical Studies from the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley in 1999.
