of the Resurrection
of the Lord
April 5, 2015
Peter’s words to the pilgrims in Jerusalem on
Pentecost summarize the core message of the gospel: “God
shows no partiality.” Jesus was anointed “with the Holy
Spirit and power” and “God was with him.” For the early
church, Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise spoken by
“all the prophets.” As a disciple, Peter is aware of his own
responsibility “to preach to the people and testify.” As
spiritual descendants of the apostles, we share in that
responsibility to bring the gospel to the world.
In Colossians we are reminded that we “were raised
with Christ;” because we are united with Christ in his
resurrection, we should “think of what is above, not of what
is on earth.” In light of our heavenly citizenship, Paul
encourages us to “put to death” those things “that are
earthly.”
After discovering Jesus’ tomb empty, Mary
Magdalene runs to tell Simon Peter and “the other disciple
whom Jesus loved” that “they have taken the Lord from the
tomb.” She suspects grave robbers. For our evangelist, she
is still in the “dark” both literally and metaphorically; she
does not yet understand the meaning of the empty tomb.
There are no angels here (as in the other Gospel accounts)
to announce the good news of the resurrection. Belief in
the resurrection is something that comes with faith for some
(the beloved disciple) and with an encounter with the risen
one for others (Mary and Peter). But no matter how faith is
acquired, it changes our life. As we celebrate the
resurrection today, may we share in the blessings of the
risen Christ.
For Reflection: How can I more fully embrace the risen
Christ in my life? How does my experience of the death of
loved ones contribute to my understanding of, and hope in,
the resurrection?
The Holy Father’s Intentions For April
Universal: That people may learn to respect creation and
care for it as a gift of God
For Evangelization: That persecuted Christians may feel
the consoling presence of the Risen Lord and the solidarity
of all the Church.

April 19: Family Day of Recollection
In conjunction with the 2015 World Meeting of Families, we will be celebrating a Family Day of Recollection on Sunday, April 19th from 12:30-2:30 PM. This day will feature a pizza lunch, and a presentation on “The Church
and the Church and Family.”
In order to have as many parents/families come and join us, we would also like to offer a program for children in the school
cafeteria. We will be offering child-friendly games, and activities for them. (Volunteers from 6th-12th grade are needed for
this preschool program. Please consider providing some service hours by baby-sitting. Please contact Mrs. Monroe to volunteer.) For planning purposes, please RSVP by calling the rectory office at 610-664-3770. Thank you!
From the Pastor
Easter - The celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord is the most solemn feast of the Church Year. Our faith in the
resurrection is at the heart of our Christian life. The Lord came among us as a man that we might have life and have it
abundantly. Our lives on earth are filled with many good things and experiences, but this is just a foretaste of the joy and
peace the Lord has prepared for us in the life to come. The Lord came to lead us through suffering and death to eternal life
and glory. This faith fills us with a deep and abiding joy, even in the midst of the sorrows of this life. As St. Augustine
said: “We are Easter people, and Alleluia is our song.” Be an Easter person. Believe in the Lord’s power to bring new
life in every circumstance. He is alive. He is with us. Through baptism we share in his divine life. The Lord is within
us to lead us to triumph over sin and death that we might have abundant life in him. We rejoice exceedingly today as we
celebrate the risen Lord who shares his life with us.
April 19 Afternoon of Recollection - In preparation for the World Meeting of Families in September, we will gather in
the Annex after the 11:30 AM Mass. We will have a pizza lunch and then some time for reflection and prayer on family
life. At 1:00 PM, there will be a brief presentation to adults and children. The children will then go over to the School for
age appropriate activities. The adults will stay in the Annex for a presentation. We will all gather together again for a
Prayer Service and conclude by 2:30PM. All parishioners and families are welcome. Come and deepen your appreciation
of and commitment to family life. Please call the rectory and give a number of those attending so that we can plan for the
pizza and supplies.
Catholic Charities Appeal 2015 - Please be generous to this most important Appeal of the Archdiocese. Your gift supports the many ways that the Archdiocese serves the needy in our local communities. As of March 20, 94 donors from
our Parish have contributed a total of $26,534.00. Our goal for this year is $77,000.00. Your donation, large or small, is
very helpful and assists the Archdiocese in heeding the Lord’s call to care for the poor.
Operation Rice Bowl - There will be a basket in the back of Church today and next Sunday so that you can make your
donations to Operation Rice Bowl. Your charity helps this longstanding program to continue to help the most needy of
our world.
Father Chuck’s Challenge - Father Chuck Pfeffer was a priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia who passed away in
2004. He was a great advocate for the young and the poor. In his memory, Father Chuck’s Challenge seeks to provide for
the poorest of the poor in Nicaragua and Haiti. Funds are raised and villages are rebuilt to provide better housing and living conditions for the needy. Visiting priests will be here on Sunday, April 19 to explain the work of the Challenge. A
second collection will be taken up on April 26 to support the work of Father Chuck’s Challenge.
Divine Mercy Sunday Devotions - Next Sunday, April 12, is Divine Mercy Sunday. We will have a holy hour from
2:00 - 3:00 PM in Church. The Holy Hour will include adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction, time for confession, and the praying of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Come and avail yourself of God’s mercy so that you can be a
better minister of peace and reconciliation in our world.
Saint of the Week: St. Mary Magdalene - This saint is
noted for her deep love of Jesus. She was so touched by
the forgiveness the Lord had extended to her that her heart
was filled with an abiding love for the Lord. She
accompanied the Lord in his days of ministering to the
people and stood by the Lord at the time of his death. She
was the first to discover that Jesus had risen. Mary
reminds us that the primary call of our faith is to
experience the Lord’s compassionate and merciful love for
us and give our hearts to him in complete devotion.
LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR
SPRING CONCERT - SCYTHIAN
Concert will be held at Villanova University’s Jake Nevin
Field House, on Saturday, April 11, doors open at 6pm.
General admission is $50/person ($20students, $10 ages 12
and under) and includes food and beverages. Please send
orders to Holy Family Home, Dept. PB, 5300 Chester Ave.,
Phila., PA 19143, or call Catherine, 215-729-5153, or visit
our website at www.littlesistersofthepoorphiladelphia.org.
Thank you for your prayers and support!
Liturgy Note: Gestures and Bodily Posture - The
gestures and bodily posture of both the Priest, the Deacon,
and the ministers, and also of the people, must be
conducive to making the entire celebration resplendent
with beauty and noble simplicity, to making clear the true
and full meaning of its different parts, and to fostering the
participation of all. Attention must therefore be paid to
what is determined by this General Instruction and by the
traditional practice of the Roman Rite and to what serves
the common good of the People of God, rather than private
inclination or arbitrary choice. A common bodily posture
to be observed by all those taking part, is a sign of the
unity of the members of the Christian community gathered
together for the Sacred Liturgy, for its expresses the
intentions and spiritual attitudes of the participants and also
fosters them.
Spiritual Thought-The Human heart is constantly seeking
good things that will make it happy; but if it seeks them from
creatures, it will never be satisfied, no matter how many it
acquires. If it seeks God alone, God will satisfy all its desires.
Who are the happiest people in this world, if not the saints? And
why? Because they desire and seek only God. (St. Alphonsus
Liquori)

World Family Meeting 2015 - The
Vatican sponsored World Meeting of
Families will take place in Philadelphia
from September 22-27, 2015. Pope
Francis will be present on September 26 and 27. Plan
to be part of it. The theme for the Meeting is “Love is
Our Mission: the Family Fully Alive.”
The theme for April is All Love Bears Fruit.
The Spiritual Fertility of Celibacy - Two of the Church’s
sacraments are unique in that they are both devoted to the
salvation of others. Both Holy Orders and Marriage confer
a special grace for a particular mission in the Church to
serve and build up the people of God. In other words, not
all men and women need to be biological parents to radiate
God’s love or take part in the “family of families” we know
as the Church. The vocation to the priesthood, or vowed
religious life, has its own integrity and glory. The Church
always needs priests and religious and parents must help all
their sons and daughters listen for the possibility that God
might be calling the, to offer their lives in this way.
Furthermore, there are many celibate lay people, with their
own irreplaceable role in the Church. The Church fosters
many distinct ways of practicing celibacy, but all of them
are, one way or another, a call to serve the Church and
foster communion in ways that are analogous with
parenting.

ARE YOU CALLED TO BE A DEACON?
Archdiocese of Philadelphia
Minister of the Word - Minister at the Altar Minister of Charity
While all of the baptized are called to share in the mission of
Jesus Christ according to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, those who
are ordained also offer service in a way proper to the Sacrament
of Holy Orders. A deacon’s ministry entails proclaiming,
preaching and teaching God’s Word, assisting the bishop and
priest at the Liturgy, assisting at funerals, ministering to the sick
and dying, leading the community in prayer and in sacramental
liturgies, baptizing, witnessing marriages, and exercising
administrative leadership in the Church. A permanent deacon,
who may be married, is a member of the clergy and shares in the
hierarchy of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Through the
Sacrament of Holy Orders, the deacon is configured to Christ the
Servant. It is Christ the Servant who acts through the ministry of
the deacon. 2015 Permanent Diaconate Information Night,
Thursday, April 16, 2015, Thursday, April 16, 2015, 7pm. St.
Charles Borromeo Seminary, Vianney Auditorium.

A Little Humor– A man who had been married for ten years
was consulting a marriage counselor. “When I was first married,
I was very happy. I’d come home from work any may little dog
would race around barking, and my wife would bring my
slippers. Now everything’s changed. When I come home, my
dog brings my slippers, and my wife barks at me.” I don’t know
what you are complaining about,” said the counselor.
“You’re still getting the same service.”

Life. These instructions are for adults who would like to inquire
about following Jesus and becoming a member of the Catholic
Church, or, if you are already a Baptized Christian, would like to
