Fifth Sunday of Easter

From The Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today is the Fifth Sunday of
Easter. Last week we spoke of
Christ as the Good Shepherd.
Remain in Me
He is The Good Shepherd
who leads us Home! Today we
hear in Saint John’s Gospel “I
am the true vine, and my Father is
the vine grower” JOHN 15:1. He
goes on to say “Remain in Me
and I remain in you.” JOHN 1:4.
“If you remain in me and my
words remain in you,
ask for whatever you want and it
will be done for you.
By this is my Father glorified,
that you bear much fruit and
become my disciples." JOHN 1: 7-8
It is by the fruits of our
prayers and our works and
labors that we as a community
become more and more the
disciples of Jesus Christ. We
begin to integrate more and
more the story of Jesus Christ
by living as His disciples in the
world.
Can This Be My Story?
The gospels of the Easter
season including those as the
gospel of the “road to Emmaus”
and “the appearances of the
Risen Christ” and “of the Good
Shepherd” and today “of the
vine grower” really speak
about Christ’s story that can
Fifth Sunday of Easter
become our story! This story
highlights the Eucharist! As the
Easter Season unfolds, we enter
into a greater understanding of
what the Eucharist means to
each and every one of us, at
Mass and how our lives are
changed by this very
celebration. Our openness leads
us to our participation in the
celebration, and ultimately how
we integrate this gift into our
own lives and therefore become
the Eucharist for one another.
Searching One’s Faith
When I was a teenager, I
went through a period where I
questioned: “How do I know
that I really believe?” Did you
ever wonder about the
doctrines of our Catholic faith?
Brothers and sisters the bottom
line is: We can go so far in
studying theology.
We, like St. Anselm, may
have our faith-seeking
understanding. However, we
finally get to a point where we
are able to say: We know we
believe by how we live. Let us
live as disciples of Jesus Christ,
taking the story of Christ and
making it part of our family
story…our parish story etc.
Then we will know we believe
by the fruits that come for the
Gift of the Holy Spirit!
Congratulations!
Again, congratulations to all
our First Communicants who
received Jesus for the first time
on May 2 and those who will
receive on May 16! We are
praying for you and also for
our Confirmandi who will
receive the Sacrament of
Confirmation next Saturday,
May 9.

St. Rosalie’s Bulletin
Statement from Cardinal Dolan On Behalf Of The
New York State Catholic Conference
Governor Cuomo and the leadership of the New York State Senate
and Assembly have announced a three-way agreement on a state
budget, which again does not include the Education Tax Credit, a
critically needed piece of legislation for the parents and students of
Catholic and other nonpublic education in the state.
Following is a statement of Timothy Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of
New York and president of the New York State Catholic Conference:
“Last week, I made the comment that there would be plenty of
blame to go around if the Education Tax Credit didn’t get done in the
state budget. And now, sadly, this has played out yet again. My brother
bishops and I are sorely disappointed in all of our political leaders in
Albany, who again assured us of their strong personal support, but again
could not deliver for the children of our state. Yet we have no alternative
but to turn to them again and implore them to please pass this legislation once and for all before the
close of the legislative session.
“The Education Tax Credit encourages increased charitable giving to public schools and to
foundations which provide scholarships to help children in need escape failing public schools. This is
why the legislation is supported by so many in our minority communities, where the financial need is the
greatest and the disparity in educational outcomes between public and Catholic schools are so great.
Parents in these communities are desperate for a better future for their children, a future that our
schools can provide. Why their representatives are insensitive to them is a mystery.
“We have a difficult time understanding how in the world this has proven to be such difficult
legislation to pass. We have a Governor who has called it a ‘matter of justice’ and included it in his
executive budget. We have a Senate that passed it overwhelmingly by a vote of 44-16 earlier this
year. And we have an Assembly with a solid majority of Democrats and Republicans who have said
they support it. In addition, it has the support of more than 150 community, business, education, faith
and labor organizations. Yet, somehow, it ended up pulled from the budget agreement, while the
public schools again get a new boost to their gargantuan budget.
“So, while we have many supporters we can and do thank, there is also plenty of blame to go
around. Our elected officials must cease allowing public school teachers unions intent on creating a
government school monopoly to continue dictating education policy in our state. We turn again to our
leaders to do the right thing, and pass the Education Tax Credit, not for any interest group, but for the
children of our state. Every year that goes by is more lost opportunity for untold numbers of children.
Their futures will not wait. Who will put their needs first?”

The Lazarus Bereavement Support
Program at St. Rosalie’s Church
We have all suffered the loss of someone near and very dear to
us. It may have been a spouse, a child, a sibling or a friend.
Sometimes our grief can be so devastating that we may feel
completely lost and alone.
The Lazarus Bereavement Support Program is a nine-week
program that provides members with an opportunity to
understand grief in a way that rebuilds our identity and
strengthens our faith in ourselves and in our Lord. Now in its
fourth year, the Lazarus Bereavement Support Program helps
members to understand that grief is experienced in each person
differently, and that it often takes a very long time for the pain to
heal. Participants will learn strategies for dealing with grief, and will receive and give
valuable group support and fellowship throughout the healing process.
Anyone who has experienced grief will be enriched by attending. The Lazarus
Bereavement Support Program at St. Rosalie's will meet on Tuesday mornings
beginning May 5, 2015, and will run for nine weeks. The co-facilitators, Dr.
Christopher Hayes and Father Kevin Thompson, assisted by Deacon Chris Ervin,
invite all interested parties to register by calling the Parish Center at 631-728-9461.
Please register early before the maximum enrollment is reached.

Permaneced unidos
conmigo; si no permanecéis unidos conmigo, moriréis.

On Saturday, May 16 from 10
a.m.-4 p.m. at the Maude Adams
House a Day for Wise Women! This
will be a day to come together as
women in the second half of our
lives to honor one another and the
wisdom we hold within. Let’s
celebrate who we are as mature
women gifted by our God! You
must be at least the glorious age
of 60 to participate.
Stewardship Reflection
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says
that God is glorified when a
disciple, grafted in Christ, produces
abundantly and bears much fruit.
The disciple must then be a good
steward of that abundance.
