For many years the Church has produced wonderful witnesses: Mother Teresa, Pope John XXIII, Pope John Paul II, Brother André, François de Montmorency, Marie de l’Incarnation among others. These are very famous saints. It is a challenge to fill their shoes. What we ask now is: Are there any witnesses in our daily lives? Must we always look to the saints proclaimed by our Church? Not at all. There are witnesses all around us. You may be in a church pew or at home or even have gone to your room to pray. Think about a hymn that could help you to recognize the people who, reassured by Christ, are truly witnesses of the Gospel in our modern world, in our city, in our work or study milieus. One hymn comes to mind: Be not afraid, I go before you always, Come, follow me, and I will give you rest. Thomas, you are remembered throughout history for your lack of faith. We understand your position. You are so much like us. “Thomas” is the modern person who needs tangible proof in order to believe. St. John’s Gospel, circa 105 AD, was written for a generation of Christians who had not encountered the living Christ, like us today. We hear about God’s wonderful works and partake of the Eucharist. We could be tempted to look for God in faraway places and difficult situations. Yet God is already waiting for us here, in our communities, as we assume our responsibilities. The fact that Tomas was able to touch Christ convinced him of the reality of the Resurrection. He also heard Christ’s voice. Think again about the hymn … Be not afraid… You will find fellow witnesses among your sisters and brothers in the faith. Yvon Cousineau, c.s.c.
