Walden West is awarding thirty scholarships for female students entering 7th-9th grades to participate in
the Abby Sobrato Science & Sustainability Center Engineering and Empowerment Weekend Conference.
What is the Abby Sobrato Science & Sustainability Center Engineering and Empowerment
Weekend Conference?
The Engineering and Empowerment weekend conference is a girls only residential conference designed to
empower local female students through engineering challenges, hands-on science and leadership training.
This is a residential conference, so the girls will be staying on-site from Friday afternoon to Sunday
afternoon. All lodging, food, activities like the ropes course, climbing wall and swimming, and materials are
included.

Which students are eligible to apply for a scholarship?
Female students in Santa Clara County entering 7th-9th grades in fall 2015.
Students with a demonstrated financial need, proven by yearly family income and submission of a
W-2 or other proof of income.
Students in good academic standing who are recommended in writing by current or previous teacher.

What funding is available?
Scholarships will be for all associated fee; lodging, food, materials.
Approximately 30 scholarships will be awarded to the most qualified applicants.
All scholarship recommendations are subject to funds available and approval by Walden West staff.

What will a student do if awarded a grant?
The student will have to submit a $35 non-refundable deposit to hold their scholarship, as well as a
signed contract agreeing to the following:
The student must arrange their own transportation to and from Walden West.
The student must attend the conference for the entire duration, June 19th- 21st.
The student must turn in a reflection of the conference by Monday, July 6th, 2015.

When will students be notified of the award?
Students will be notified by Friday, May 8, 2015.
