Event at a Glance
An unprecedented celebration of the best of Japanese and Canadian
culture, the Sakura Gala is the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s
(JCCC) premier fundraiser and black tie affair abound with corporate
support year after year.

In its seventh year, the Sakura Gala will take place on Saturday, May
30, 2015 at the JCCC. Guests will experience an unforgettable evening
celebrating and mingling with top literary talent. The evening will
be hosted by CBC Radio’s Mary Ito, will showcase hors d’oeuvres and
a three-course dinner marrying Japanese and Canadian flavours
and will feature a live performance by Japanese singer-songwriter
Tatsuya Ishii and spectacular silent and live auctions.

IN THE PROMOTION OF
JAPANESE CULTURE
One of the Sakura Gala’s many highlights is the presentation of the Sakura
Award which recognizes exceptional contributions by individuals in the
promotion and exchange of Japanese culture and enhancing awareness of
Nikkei heritage within Canada and abroad. In 2015, the JCCC will honour Joy
Kogawa and Haruki Murakami with Sakura Awards.
Joy Kogawa is the acclaimed Nikkei writer and
poet whose novel Obasan is the seminal work of
Japanese-Canadian literature and one that has
educated countless Canadians, Americans and
Japanese on the history of the Japanese Canadians
and the critical lessons on human rights and
racial equality therein. Her work extends beyond
literature; she is also a philanthropist, educator and cultural historian.
Ms. Kogawa established The Historic Joy Kogawa House Society in her
childhood Vancouver home, which operates as a writers-in-residence site
with regular events and workshops. Ms. Kogawa has previously received
the Order of Canada and the Order of the Rising Sun.
Haruki Murakami is a contemporary Japanese
writer. His universally acclaimed and award-winning
works of fiction and non-fiction are read all over the
world and are a favourite among Canadian readers.
Mr. Murakami has written novels such as The WindUp Bird Chronicle, Kafka on the Shore and 1Q84.
The release of a new work by Mr. Murakami is an
international literary event; he is widely considered Japan’s greatest living
writer and a perennial favourite for the Nobel Prize for Literature. The most
recent of his many international literary honours is the Jerusalem Prize.
He is also the recipient of the Franz Kafka Prize and has received honorary
doctorates from three universities including Princeton University.

Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre
F
ounded in 1963, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre is one of
the largest and most vibrant Japanese cultural centres in the world.
Its mandate is to promote Japanese culture and Japanese Canadian
heritage. The JCCC offers programs, services and a gathering place to
celebrate Japanese and Japanese Canadian culture. Through its motto
“Friendship through Culture,” the JCCC facilitates friendship between
people from all segments of society and celebrates Canada’s cultural
diversity, thereby building a stronger, more unified community.
Supporting Cultural and
Heritage Programming
The JCCC is one of the largest cultural centres in the world. Donations
are vital to funding its broad spectrum of Japanese cultural programs
for its 4,500 members and 200,000 annual visitors. Programming
is diverse and offers something for everyone from film screenings,
festivals, performances, art and history exhibitions to classes,
workshops and a wide array martials arts disciplines.
The JCCC’s heritage programming recognizes the sacrifices and
accomplishments of the Japanese Canadian community and
contributes to the evolving Nikkei experience in Canada. The lessons
of cultural acceptance implicit in the story of the Japanese Canadian
community are as relevant today as ever.

he Sakura Gala offers the opportunity to promote and advertise your

The gala draws a unique mix of community and corporate attendees
(400) while promotions leading up to and following the event reach the
JCCC’s 4,500 members and the broader community.

The Sakura Gala attracts the biggest and best of Canadian media. The
JCCC will recognize and promote your sponsorship of the Seventh
Annual Sakura Gala with an extensive media campaign.
Local and national media have sponsored and promoted the gala over
the years including National Post, the Toronto Star, CBC Toronto and CTV.
Sakura Gala sponsors receive exposure through an integrated media
campaign including print and online ads, press coverage, media
released, social media, signage and more.
In 2014, the Sakura Gala posthumously honoured Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara and the
Jewish Canadian Community of Toronto, as represented by Honorary Recipient, the late Henry
Zagdanski, ‫ז״ל‬. Both Honourees were represented by their families at the event.
