For the 2015 Young Scientist of the Year, there will be no group entries accepted. STAQ (Science Teachers Association of
Queensland) have not yet finalised the divisions for the Queensland Science Contest given that Year 7 has gone to high
school. So that we do not put any group entries at a disadvantage and enable as many entries as possible to qualify for entry
to the Queensland Science Contest we have opted to not have group entries as an option this year. If you have any questions
please email Miss Meiklejohn at [email protected].
Your project must be entered in one of the following categories:






Classified Collections (Plan and organise a scientifically labelled collection and include relevant
data from research.)
Scientific Investigations (Choose a topic to investigate through a well designed experiment, using a
question you wish to answer. )
Communicating Science (Develop a PowerPoint, article, multi-media presentation, model, game or
a Web Site to explain a scientific principle or concept.)
Mathematical Investigations (Time; Probability, pi, fractals, tessellation, puzzles, algebra, maths in
nature or any other maths topic of your choice.)
Innovations and Inventions (Design and build an original model or invent a machine or process
that illustrates a scientific concept or does a special job.)
Environmental Action Projects (Scientifically investigate an environmental problem in the local
area. Collect and analyse data about the problem, drawing conclusions and making suggestions for
improvement.)
NOTE: Prize winning and selected Highly Commended entries in each division will be considered for free entry as school
representatives in the Science Teachers’ Association of Queensland (STAQ) Queensland Science Contest. There bursaries
available for particular categories.
BURSARIES: These cash prizes are available for entries that progress to the State contest. Google STAQ Science
Contest to locate current bursaries.
Judging will take place as soon as the judging panel can be assembled, after the 7 August.
State Contest entrants will be notified as soon as adjudication is finalised.
All decisions of the judging panel are final and binding and no correspondence whatsoever will be entered into
regarding these decisions.
Students will receive support with their project via scheduled lunch time meetings throughout Term 2 and early Term 3.
Students can also approach Miss Meiklejohn, Mr Clarke or Mrs Roberts for support with their project outside of those meeting
times.
