ENGLISH D E P A R T M E N T O F Brigham Young University English Department 4198 JFSB Provo, UT 84602 BYU English Department Writing Contests Rules and Information • Each contest awards $100 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place. • An entry must be the original work of the student submitting it and must not have been previously published or accepted for publication, although it may have been submitted for publication. • Contests are open to both undergraduate and graduate students, with a separate division for each. Undergraduate students must be English majors, or have taken an English class during the previous fall semester, or be currently enrolled in an English class. During the semester when the contest entries are due, an undergraduate student must be registered for at least 9 credit hours, and a graduate student must be registered for at least 6 credit hours. Graduate students from any BYU program are welcome to enter. • A student may submit only one entry to each contest in a given year. A student who wins first place in a contest is not eligible to enter that contest the following year. • An entry may not be simultaneously submitted to any other BYU writing contest except the Writer's Portfolio Contest. (A separate page of rules is available for this contest.) • Although an entry may treat any theme and be in any style, it must conform to standards of general good taste, as determined by the judges. • Fiction submitted must be between five and twentyfive pages long, may be in the form of a short story, part of a novella, or chapter of a novel, and must be labeled as to the form; a novel chapter or part of a novella must be accompanied by a brief summary of the novel or novella. Please do not submit whole novels or novellas. • Poetry entries must be between thirty and one hundred lines long but may consist of one or more poems. • Essays submitted may be on any subject but must be between 500 and 5000 words long. Research papers are not eligible. • All entries must be printed on white paper on one side of the page. Poetry may be single spaced, but prose must be doublespaced. Entries must be printed in a roman font, no smaller than 12point. All pages (except the first) must be numbered. Carelessly edited entries will be summarily disqualified. • The student's name must NOT appear on the manuscript. Rather, a submission form (provided online) must be filled out and stapled to each entry. • Winners will be notified by mail or email. Awards will be made at the annual English Department Awards Banquet. • No manuscripts will be returned. Entries not submitted to Inscape for possible publication (see cover sheet) may be picked up after the awards banquet at the department office. Unclaimed entries will be shredded the first week of May. • Please submit entries to the English Department Office. See cover sheet for submission deadlines. • Winners will be required to submit a W-9 form before monetary awards can be issued.
