Amazing Read Summer Adventure We are excited to announce a continuation of the Amazing Read into the summer of 2015! The Amazing Read is a reading incentive program for student to read their way around the world equating each minute read to miles earned. Traditionally this is done as a class team, however, for the summer we invite students participating to invite their families to participate. Students are issued a passport to record fun information about each destination they reach. They also get a stamp in their passport at each destination reached. Summer passports will include the 21 destinations we have traveled to during the past four years of The Amazing Read. We will have monthly celebrations, with a final celebration on August 17th with a rock wall and hot dog roast. Summer passports will be distributed on Friday, May 22nd (please watch for these to come home on the last day of school!!) If your child would like to participate, please let your child’s teacher know by Friday, May 15th. Students will be responsible for keeping track of their passports. How the Summer Program works: Qualifying reading begins Monday, May 25th and ends Friday, August 14th. Students will earn 2 miles for each minute read. They will earn a ticket to climb the rock wall for every 2,000 miles they read. A reading calendar will be provided with the summer passport. Parents’ signatures will be required for summer minutes to count. Students can also earn a ticket to climb the rock wall for every 2 destinations visited. To visit a destination you must read a book with the setting in that area, include animals/geography in that area, or read a book by an author from that area (it doesn’t have to be the exact city to count – if the setting or author or animal is from that country it will count) A reading list of books available from the American Heritage School library correlating with each destination will be distributed with the passports. We will hold monthly Destination Celebrations on the following dates: Tuesday, June 23 from 11:00-11:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 14 from 11:00-11:45 a.m. Tuesday, August 4 from 11:00-11:45 a.m. The final celebration will take place on Monday, August 17th at 11:00 a.m. We will have some fun-filled celebrations planned on the dates mentioned above, however, students are not required to come to the monthly celebrations to earn miles. Students may come to the library from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. most days throughout the summer to have their passports stamped and to check out books. They will need to attend the August 17th celebration to have their minutes counted and climb the rock wall. If you are interested in helping with any of the celebrations, please contact Ms. Larsen ([email protected]) or Mrs. McConkie ([email protected]). We look forward to continuing the reading adventure with your children!! Sincerely, Shirley Larsen & Melanie McConkie 2015 Summer Amazing Read Book List Author Title ALASKA Claire Murphy Dennis B.
