San Diego No. 35 Annual Fish Fry COME ONE, COME ALL to the Annual San Diego No. 35 Fish Fry! It’s that time of year again where we gather at the historic Barrett Junction Café and Mercantile to enjoy the world famous fish fry as well as each other’s company. We will gather on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 4:00pm to kick off the summer, “35 Style.” So why is the Barrett Junction Fish Fry so famous? There is a lot of history in this little corner of San Diego and the Barrett Junction Café and Mercantile is a big part of that history. The original structure that was the mercantile was built in 1917. It still stands today by the current café and has served the travelers of Highway 94 for ninety five years. It wasn’t until the early 1950’s; however, the fish fry began to happen regularly. In the early days of the mercantile and neighboring café, it was a stopping place and watering hole for locals and travelers alike. Then, in 1946 the Wolf family sold their café at Barrett Junction to Bill and Vi Avril—a husband and wife who had worked at Rohr during the war and wanted to escape the bonds of city life for the tranquility of the San Diego back country. Bill, wanting to attract more business, held roping competitions for local cowboys on weekends and eventually built a rodeo arena and grandstand that stood for nearly a decade. In 1957, after other communities closer to San Diego built rodeo arena’s, Bill decided to close the rodeo and bought a surplus military Quonset hut to host dances at the café. Again, this had the desired effect and more people frequented the enterprise. Around the same time as the rodeo was in full swing in 1952, locals would gather at the café to enjoy the fish Bill and other people had caught in the nearby lake. What started as a group of friends frying up their catch as a free fish fry quickly gained in popularity. As the crowds grew, Bill had to resort to buying fish from local wholesalers to meet the demand. Soon a tradition was born and Bill saw an opportunity. The fish-fry quickly took off and people would drive from all over San Diego for what was then a 75 cent all-you-can-eat-fish-feast! Now you know a little about the history of the world famous Barrett Junction Café and Mercantile Fish Fry, come out and join us in what truly is a San Diego tradition. We hope to see you and your family there at 4:00pm, Sunday, May 31, 2015. Come one, come all!
