Is Bill Gates Your Uncle?
I
n the shadow of the hype and anticipation of an upcoming mega-million-dollar lottery, the folks at my office started
a conversation attempting to answer the
question, “What would you do if you won
the multi-million dollar prize?” At first, the
answers were as expected—an exotic sports
car, a big house, or quit the job and travel.
After the self-centered items, we got to taking care of aging parents, paying for college,
and homes and cars for all, etc. But in the
end, the conversation came down to who we
would want to help with the money. The answer? Our church, our school, and a mission
project.
I suggest this purely as a mental exercise,
so let your imagination wander with the
question. If you prefer a different paradigm:
Bill Gates decides to leave you most of his
money. What would you do with the megamillion-dollar windfall? I can envision many
projects that would benefit MBA, my local
church school and church—subsidized tuition so all who wanted could attend, new
updated buildings and equipment, better pay
for teachers and staff, and the list goes on.
The reality can be illustrated by a situation
I found myself in not long ago while serving
on my local church school board. Our task
was to figure out how to replace our old dying school buses with a new diesel bus at a
cost of $70,000—when there was no mon-
2
alumni.montereybayacademy.org
ey in the budget for a bus, and certainly not
for two! As the discussion was headed towards overwhelming gloom, despair, and discouragement, it was suggested that we look
outside at the cars parked in the parking lot.
There were three Suburbans, a Corvette, and
several other new cars. The thought that a
bus was roughly equal to the cost of two Suburbans changed our whole perspective. The
mood of the meeting changed immediately,
and we resolved right then to begin the process of raising the money to purchase the first
bus and to not stop fundraising until the second bus was replaced as well. This came with
each of us gazing at our own car and making a personal commitment to be part of the
solution. I challenge you to check out your
church parking lot on any given Sabbath.
God has blessed us, folks!
Every month our schools face these types
of financial challenges. Buildings are outdated and not up to code, equipment needs repaired or replaced, students need financial
assistance and there is no money in the budget. Waiting for the windfall that will solve
our problems is not reality. I believe that
sometimes we wait for God to present us
with the “winning lottery ticket” to solve all
our problems, when in reality He is waiting
for us to meet the challenges before us, to
move boldly forward, and to ask for His
guidance and blessing. As alumni we can
help share the burden and give as we have
been blessed. If you believe that MBA is
God’s school—as I do—then ask yourself the
question, “What can I do to help?” Join me
in sharing the burden and you will find that
your life will be blessed beyond measure.
And, if it turns out that Bill Gates is you
uncle, then we should talk. . . .

The Blessings of Giving
B
irthdays, weddings, anniversaries,
graduations, Mother’s Day, Father’s
Day, and Christmas! What do these
days have in common? They are an occasion
to receive gifts—and who among us doesn’t
like to receive a gift? Gifts bring joy and excitement as we anticipate what we might find
under the wrapping. More notably, a gift
says we are loved, honored, and appreciated.
It says we are important and we’ve made a
difference in someone’s life.
While receiving gifts is wonderful and exciting, let’s consider for a moment the giver
and the act of giving. I can remember as a
young child, my parents being very intentional about instilling in me and my siblings
the attitude Paul mentions in Acts 20:35: It
is more blessed to give than to receive. Now,
that’s a hard concept for a child to comprehend—especially on Christmas Day or at
birthday parties when it’s all about getting
gifts. The giver is happier than the getter?
How can that be? Paul must have misunderstood Christ’s words. There must be some
mistake!
I began to understand the meaning of this
text when, as a teenager, I went on my first
mission trip. My family was living in southern California at the time, so Mexico was the
planned destination. Loaded with clothing,
food and school supplies, we visited several
small churches, an orphanage, and of all
places, a dump where families had created

“homes” out of cardboard boxes. I will never
forget the joy and excitement I saw on the
faces of those little children as we handed out
something as simple as a pair of shoes. We
had made a difference in another person’s
life. It didn’t seem possible, but the givers
were happier than the getters!
It was not until I became a parent, however, that I truly experienced that “aha moment” of understanding. When I looked into
the face of my newborn child for the first
time, I immediately became personally invested in that child’s life and knew there was
nothing I would not do to provide for him.
But more importantly, as I cradled my infant
son, I began to grasp the magnitude of God’s
amazing gift of grace in the form of His
Son—so that I might have eternal life. I also
realized that the blessing in giving was not
about the physical gifts we give, but rather
the giving of ourselves to someone else. After all, isn’t that what His gift was all about?
This issue of Sandscripts reflects on you,
the giver of the many gifts given to MBA in
2014. Whether it was your kind words of encouragement and appreciation, your time
and abilities given as a volunteer, or monetary gifts you so generously gave, we say,
“Thank you!” There are no words to adequately express our gratitude for all you have
done and what we have been able to accomplish through your gifts. It is my hope that
you have been blessed and have experienced
what it’s like to be “happier than the getter,”
because you truly have made a difference in
the lives of MBA students. We have been
blessed beyond measure, and this I know for
sure: When He has given us exceeding, yea,
abundant blessings, still we may ask for more.
And He is able to do it. Wesley’s Explanatory
Notes on Ephesians 3:20.

any of you reading this article
may recognize the title as the
mission statement of Loma
Linda University (LLU), and you would be
correct. It’s a powerful and noble mission
statement for a medical institution to strive
to carry out. While every doctor and nurse
at LLU endeavors to fulfill this mission statement with each patient they treat, there are
few areas of medicine that make this statement as visible—and perhaps more literal—
than in the field of orthotics and prosthetics.
How did your educational journey bring
you to Monterey Bay Academy? According to the 1986 MBA yearbook, you lived
in Redlands, CA.
I was attending Redlands Junior Academy
and I needed to make a decision of where I
would attend school for my junior and senior
years. When I realized Monterey Bay Academy was next to a beach, the decision was
made.
You are married to Monterey Bay Academy alumna, Karen (Morris) Davidson ’86.
Did the two of you date while at MBA?

On the last weekend of school at MBA,
Karen and I went on a date. We went to
Capitola, CA, and sat on a bench by the
beach and talked for hours. After graduation,
I went to Pacific Union College and met
Karen again. We went on a date that first
weekend of school. Karen and I were eventually married and Capitola City Beach remains a special place for us. When we visit
MBA, we always return to Capitola and the
same bench to spend a few hours. We currently live in Calimesa, CA, and have three
boys, Liam, Ethan and Ewan. Karen works
for Loma Linda University as an instructor,
lecturer, and professor for the School of Allied Health.
Meet Monterey Bay Academy graduate,
Michael Davidson ’86. As an Assistant Clinical Professor for the School of Allied Health
(Physical Therapy), Assistant Professor for
the School of Medicine (Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation), and Clinical Manager
of the Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics, Michael literally transforms the lives
of the patients he comes in contact with. You
see, he works with individuals who have suffered limb-loss and whose bodies are incomplete. However, with the talents and skills
God has blessed him with, he is able to make
them whole again. What follows is an inspiring interview I had with Michael.

your life early on, or at MBA, that drew
you to this line of work? How did MBA
prepare you for this career?
When I was young, my mother suffered a
stroke, causing some paralysis in her arm, as
well as requiring her to wear a brace on her
leg to help her walk. I attempted to make a
robotic arm for her.
While attending Monterey Bay Academy,
I took an anatomy class and I really enjoyed
learning about the human body and how it
works. I believe that experience made an early contribution to my decision.
I’ve read some articles about Paralympic
champion, Rudy Garcia-Tolson, a young
ter individual medley SM7, and broke the
Americas Record for the SM7.

ted him with prosthetics. Can you tell me
a little about Rudy?
I met Rudy when he was 5-years-old. He
had both legs amputated at the knee due to
the syndrome mentioned above—a rare birth
defect in which webbing of the skin limits
mobility. He was told that he would never
walk or run. That, however, did not stop
him from having an intense desire to run. I
have learned so much and have been blessed
by working with Rudy.
When Rudy was 8-years-old, he started
running 5K races and later sprint triathlons.
Then, he did Olympic distance triathlons
ALUMNI FEATURE
How would you describe your average
day at work?
I get to manage a lab and clinic that produces 2,200 medical devices a year. There
are nine employees and 57 students who
work with me to provide these devices to individuals with limb loss or injuries to the extremities or spine. We are exploring new
technologies of bionics and 3D printing to
provide these services with better outcomes.
Loma Linda University now has an Orthotics and Prosthetics school which offers an entry-level master’s degree program. With two
years of college, the student learner can enter our 2½ year program, graduating with a
Bachelor of Health Science and a Master of
Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics. This is
a very affordable degree program, and a very
sustainable career option.

and eventually completed an Ironman Triathalon—a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bicycle
ride, and a 26.2-mile run. I had the privilege
to see him compete at the London 2012
Paralympic Games where he won a silver
medal in swimming. Throughout his athletic career, he has won a number of gold and
bronze medals as well.
Rudy challenges the perceptions of what a
disability is and then shows us what is possible. He has been an inspiration to so many
people with his determination and courage.
He has also inspired others to run, as well.
Today, he is helping me create a biomechanics lab to study sports and limb-loss.
am back in school part-time, enrolled in a
doctoral program to earn a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences. The Rehabilitation, Orthopaedic, and Neurosciences Institute
(RONI) arm is one of my areas of study.
What one piece of advice could you give
to our current MBA students?
Learn how to code a computer language,
but also seek a career that you love. What
ever you love, needs a computer to manage
it. You can be the person who gets paid to
figure it out.
What do you find to be the greatest reward that you get from your work?
I love helping people—this gives me a sense

Additional Information
I’ve read up on the RONI arm project,
have watched the online video, and am
amazed at the technology. Are you still

I’ve read about the LLU Health PossAbilities organization? What is your connection with that organization? Is this organization one that is connected with your
department at LLU?
PossAbilities is a very important service of
Loma Linda University Health that serves
with support to reintegrate those with physical disabilities into the community. Every
year, the organization hosts a triathlon where
anyone can participate. Many have done
their first triathlon at this event. All ages, ethnicities, genders, and ability-level compete
together with the single goal of finishing.
The event shows us that anything is possible
and it unites the community in a way that
we inspire each other.

MBA Mission Adventure: Brazil
by Steve Wilson
W
hen you hear the words mission
trip, what’s the first thing that
comes to mind? I’ve heard a lot of
different definitions such as, a ministry commissioned by a specific organization, or an
important assignment given to a group of individuals, and a more commonly heard definition: witnessing, evangelism and serving
others. A mission trip is all of these definitions, and much more. It’s what God does
through His people, through His church,
and even through a high school
youth group. It’s spreading
the gospel through
word and deed to
all people of the
world.
On March 17,
2015, 42 MBA
students and
sponsors will board a
flight to Manaus, Brazil,
where they will then embark on
a sailing vessel and take a 20-hour trip
down the Amazon River to their destination
of Nhamunda, Brazil. Once in Nhamunda,
their “mission” includes many things: refurbish a church that was built 10-years ago by
another group, start a church school building, do the ground work for a new church
building that is 30 minutes farther down the
river, provide a Vacation Bible School for the
children in the area during the day and evangelistic meetings for the adults in the evening.
As you can see, this mission trip includes every definition mentioned above. The goal is
to meet not only some of the physical needs
of the people in Nhamunda, but also minister to their spiritual needs as well. Hopefully, the people there will come to know Christ
because they see in us a living, vibrant relationship with Him.
The return trip will provide an opportunity to do some sightseeing. We will be stopping in Parintins, a popular village 350 miles
from Manaus that is 200-years-old and has
a rich Indian heritage. The city, located on
the tip of Tupinambarana Island in the Amazon River, will allow the students to see true
Amazonian folklore and native culture.

This mission trip is a major undertaking
for our students and they are giving up their
Spring vacation to do it. Serving others and
giving of themselves is a major desire of each
student going, but what they don’t know is,
not only will they change the lives of those
they come in contact with, their lives will be
changed as well. It is a life changing event in
which they will truly experience the blessings
of giving.
It’s not too late to help with Monterey Bay
Academy Mission Adventure: Brazil.
Mission trips take a lot of
planning, hard work,
and funding. Any
donated funds
that come in after March 17th
will be sent to
Nhamunda to
keep the project going through to completion. If you would like to help
with this project, mark your gifts, Brazil
Mission Trip. Thank you for your help, your
support, and most importantly your prayers.
May God richly bless each of us in this endeavor.

MBA is Making History
By Tim Zytkoskee
This fall, during the October homeleave,
33 MBA students and seven sponsors went
on a nine-day history trip to the East Coast.
While there were many highlights to this trip,
the one that stands out for most of the students was the trip to the brand new National September 11 Memorial & Museum. This
visit touched their hearts and really helped
them connect with the people who went
through that sad and terrible day.
Other memorable sites in New York included a trip to Ellis Island and the Statue
of Liberty, the Empire State Building, seeing the play, Phantom of the Opera, and visiting the FDR Library in Hyde Park. For
Sabbath worship, they attended the birthplace of the Seventh-day Adventist church
in Washington, NH. In addition, the New
England visit was highlighted by a walking
tour of the famous Boston Freedom Trail, as
well as, an excursion to Concord and Lexington. A colonial village in Sturbridge, MA,
was another memorable site.
By the time the group returned to MBA,
they were very tired and worn out, but filled
with memories to last a lifetime. History
teacher, Tim Zytkoskee says, “It was a joy
for me to take these students on this memorable tour. Everywhere we went, people took
the sponsors aside and commented on how
well our students handled themselves. They
made us all very proud.
At my father’s funeral several years ago,
many people commented on how he was a
man who did not collect things, but rather
experiences. This trip was an experience that
these students will never forget or have taken away from them.”

JANUARY 01 – DECEMBER 31, 2014
2014 ANNUAL REPORT
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
A Blessing Inside
I
am not sure when, in a person’s life adventure, oversized envelopes begin to indicate that what is inside may be extraspecial. My encounter with oversized
envelopes began when I was the youth pastor of a large church and my wife, Amy, was
a stay-at-home mom caring for our three
adorable (and active) ankle-biters. She cared
for our youth group at home, I took care of
the youth group at church, and as often as
possible, I found ways to mingle the two.
For several years while at that church, a
large envelope would arrive at our home
around the holiday time. On the outside,
printed in neat lettering, “Pastor PJ & Amy
Deming Family.” Inside, we found a classy
card with a holiday sentiment, a note that
simply said—in handwriting we could not
identify, “We appreciate you,” and a crisp,
one-hundred-dollar bill.
Our first reaction was, “Who sent this? We
don’t deserve this!” The card and its contents
were carefully laid on Amy’s dresser, and a
quiet investigation ensued. We thought we
needed to find who had sent the card and return it—it was just too much money! At last,
we realized it would be impossible to figure
out who had sent the gift and that it was
okay to simply enjoy the blessing.
After moving away, as you would expect,
the envelopes from that kind and caring family stopped. Over the years, however, I’ve
come to greatly appreciate the blessings of
envelopes (large and small!) that bear messages of affection and love, kind and gentle
reminders of being valued, and words of affirmation and encouragement. And even the
occasional anonymous benefactor bestowing
a gift of thoughtfulness and generosity.
These all have been blessings to my heart.
While I’m not quite in a position to invest
large monetary gifts into projects, programs,
or poor youth pastors, I do know that some
of the greatest gifts that can be given are
words of encouragement and appreciation,
gentle reminders of how much a person is
valued. I have been blessed by these very
“gifts” throughout my ministry, and I continue to be overwhelmed by the gift of giving I
see daily in the lives of those around me who
share in the important ministry of training
God’s kids.
With a grateful heart, we thank you for the
gifts you have so generously given to MBA.
PRINCIPAL PJ’S P·A·C·E
PASSION for ADVENTIST CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
PJ Deming’s passion for Adventist education has led him to MBA, both as pastor and educator, and now as principal. To benefit the student financial
aid fund at MBA, PJ is registered to
run the “21-Miler” section of the
Big Sur International Marathon in
April 2015.
Be a part of the pact to cheer on
our principal and help him keep
PACE, as he runs the 21 miles towards the goal of raising $5,000—
via a per-mile pledge, a lump-sum gift,
or a “just because” donation.
Mark the enclosed gift envelope “PACE” or
contact the Alumni Office to make your contribution or for more information.
We appreciate your encouragement, kind
words, and affirmation. And when we open
those “cards” and something extra falls out,
we are completely in awe of the care God
continues to show. For we are told in James
1:17, Every good and perfect gift is from above. . . .
Until another moment in time, may God
bless you, and Keep Looking uP!

Scholarships: The Gift That Keeps on Giving
T
hroughout 2014, 38 MBA students
received more than $58,000 from endowed and named scholarships.
What began years ago with two or three
scholarships being awarded during the worship service annually at Alumni Weekend
has become an event of its own. The Scholarship Reception takes place on Thursday
evening of our annual Alumni Weekend and
we now award 12 endowed scholarships and
14 named scholarships.
For those of you who have participated in
this event, you know that it is more than an
evening of shaking hands and eating decadent desserts. Each year, students and their
parents are amazed at the stories of people,
accomplishments, and events behind the
scholarships that are presented. While it is
easy to track and tabulate the dollar amounts,
the impact these scholarships have on the
lives of our students is immeasurable. It is
Recipients of the 2014 Class of 1959 Scholarship
undoubtedly an event that honors people
and preserves the very history of MBA.
Is there someone or something you wish
to honor and remember by establishing a
scholarship? An endowed scholarship can be
started with any amount, but must reach the
$20,000 endowed level within five years of
the start date. Establishing a scholarship,
whether it is endowed or a named scholarship, is truly a gift that keeps on giving.

MBA Alumni Endowment
Our academy is blessed with active and generous alumni who believe in the mission of
MBA and give enthusiastic support. Part of
this support is in the form of the MBA Alumni Endowment which generates scholarships
for MBA students. The fund is over $750,000
and, over the last 15 years, has been able to
provide scholarships for over 135 students.
The help a student receives is in recognition
of their efforts, and is an encouragement for
them to continue being the type of student
the alumni of MBA will support. This fund
also enables faculty to attend continuing education conferences and conventions.
The current focus of the Alumni Endowment is the Alumni Scholarship program, in
which student leaders from each class are
awarded $2,500 to help with their tuition.
These students have demonstrated academic
excellence (3.5 GPA or above), leadership,
and service accomplishments. We are looking
forward to the upcoming awards ceremony,
April 23, 2015 when another group of MBA’s
best will be announced as Alumni Scholars.
Please remember, the Alumni Endowment
Fund is our fund. We, the alumni of MBA,
2014 Alumni Scholars (L to R): Jake Roach (Medford, OR), Mika Wells (Seaside, CA), Andi Snyder
(Grass Valley, CA). Not pictured: Tadi Chirongoma (Zimbabwe, Africa).
provide the money that makes these scholarships possible. Thank you for your generous
support in the past, and we ask that you continue to remember the Alumni Endowment
Fund in the future and the students we are
able to serve.
Thank you,
