SHS NEWS April 2015 Notes from the Principal & More Dear Parents, Guardians and Students: As April is upon us, it is clear that this year has gone by fast. We only have two months left and we are packing a lot into them. We even have Prom this month! Most of you are aware of MAP testing since our district has been doing this for years. We will be starting MAP testing for freshmen on April 13. Also, the final phase of PARCC testing for Algebra II and English III pupils will begin on April 27. We have learned a lot from the first phase and will be making some changes including testing students only during their assigned Algebra II and English III classes whenever possible to alleviate students missing other academic classes. I have some good news. We will be offering $35 sports physicals to current freshmen, sophomores and juniors on May 21 at SHS. The physicals will be performed by Dr. Erik Englehart. All studentathletes must have a sports physical before they will be allowed to participate in any SHS sport. Sports physicals are good for one year and also can be conducted by your physician or clinic. Market Day Market Day has been a strong supporter of Sandwich High School. Newsletter 1 Education Foundation Needs Your Help The Foundation for Educational Excellence, commonly known as the Sandwich Education Foundation, is in desperate need of help to continue achieving its goal of supporting, promoting, supplementing, and enriching the educational programs and activities of students residing within the boundaries of Sandwich CUSD #430. The Foundation is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1994 and is governed by a volunteer board of trustees made up of citizens having an active interest in the educational advancement of the students, employees, and citizens of the community and its schools. Through the generosity of donations from the community, the Foundation has had great success with its annual fundraisers. Since the Foundation’s inception, it has raised over $360,000. These funds have been used for programs, books, technological equipment, hands-on experiences, and scholarships for Sandwich-area students. The number of volunteer trustees has dwindled over the years, and additional help is needed. The ability of the current board to continue with the annual fundraiser is in jeopardy without additional support. It would be a shame to see this funding source lost due to lack of volunteers. The Sandwich Education Foundation board of trustees typically meets monthly from September through June, with a few extra meetings once we are close to the date of the fundraiser. To serve as a trustee, there is no requirement to be an employee of the District or to have a child in the school system. The only real requirement is your willingness to assist the Foundation in achieving its goals. All interested parties are welcome, and the group is open to suggestions. If the Education Foundation is something you might be interested in supporting, please contact current Board President Dorothy Wilgus at 630-303-4978 or [email protected]. This new system can be accessed through your current Tyler Parent Portal link where you are checking grades, lunch account balances and any other fees that have been or need to be paid. Once you have signed into your Parent Portal, you will see a ‘new’ link for Online Registration as shown in the example below. Once you have accessed the new area, you will see a list of the forms to be completed. Once you begin the process, the system will continue to the various forms after each completion. There are ‘electronic’ signature boxes where you & your child will be asked to ‘check’ a box or select ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. This signature is the same as if you were completing the form manually & signed the form with a pen. Beginning with this registration season, the default method of registration will be electronic or online. If you are not able or do not have the ability to use this method, you will need to contact your attendance center for a printed form to fill out or you can print the form from the District website, http://www.sandwich430.org/forms, in the 2015-16 Registration Form section. If you do not have a Parental Portal account setup, please contact your attendance center and they will be happy to assist you. You will need to provide them with a valid email address. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at 815-786-2187 ext. 6 or email at [email protected]. Regards, Glen Bloemker Director of Technology Sandwich CUSD #430 SHS News 7 Sandwich CUSD 430 Mr. Thomas C. Sodaro Principal Sandwich High School [email protected] Phone 815-786-2157 Fax 815-786-2632 515 Lions Road Sandwich, Illinois 60548 April 1, 2015 Dear Parent or Guardian: In preparation for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year, Sandwich School District has partnered with Dr. Erik Englehart to offer sports physicals! Dr. Englehart will be assisted by Scott Davis, NP-C. These sports physicals will take place during school hours on May 21, 2015 from 8:30 am through 3:00 pm. All that is needed is a signed permission form and $35.00 payment. Parents are not required to be present. The exam will cover your student for the entire 2015-2016 school year and any and all sports he/she may participate in. Without an updated sports physical, students will not be able to participate in any sport at Sandwich High School. Sports physicals focus on a student’s athletic health history and preparedness to participate in athletics and are much more limited than a regular “well-child” physical. Note that sports physicals do not meet the state guidelines for entry into the ninth grade. Since all incoming freshmen are required to have a full “well-child” physical done by their primary care physician and that thorough exam also clears a student for participation in athletics, the in-school sports physicals are only being offered to students who will be in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades during the 2015-2016 school year. Our goal is to assist parents and students in conveniently obtaining a sports physical by eliminating the need to make an outside appointment and/or take time off of work. Please contact Kim Gonzalez, school nurse, should you have any questions. Sincerely, Tom Sodaro Principal Sandwich High School Kim Gonzalez, RN SHS School Nurse Sandwich High School SHS News 8 SHS ACADEMICS & ACTIVITIES April 2015 Foreign Language Spanish I students are starting something very new! Up until now, students have only been able to express themselves or talk about what is happening using the present tense. Students will now be able to use the imperative mood to politely tell others what to do. They are also learning how to talk about chores, so this is a great opportunity for them to practice their Spanish while they are helping out around the house. Spanish II students are continuing to explore the two distinct ways to talk about the past in Spanish. For many Spanish students, these lessons on the past tenses are the most difficult of all. Once the past is mastered, future lessons can feel like smooth sailing. Congratulate your student on the hard work it took them to get to this point in the year, and encourage them to keep practicing a little bit every day! Spanish III students continue to explore the Spanish subjunctive mood and are learning to distinguish when it is appropriate to use it. The subjunctive mood occurs much more frequently in Spanish than it does in English, so for some students it can feel a little strange. As always, a little daily practice can reinforce what the students have learned and bring them one step closer to the ability to communicate easily. Spanish IV students have finished reviewing the Spanish subjunctive mood in the present, which they spent several months on last year, and are beginning a unit on using the subjunctive in the past. Additionally, they are exploring Barcelona, a beautiful city in the north of Spain that lies along the Mediterranean Sea. CTE Department push. Reminder to all senior parents: If your child is in Consumer Education, it is required to pass for graduation. The consumer budget project, the biggest assignment of the semester, is due Tuesday, April 10. Next, the students will be covering banking and checking and learning to reconcile their bank accounts. They will then study credit and how to get loans for car buying and mortgages. Keyboarding class will be done with their online class in the next two weeks, and then will learn how to format documents and letters in Microsoft Word. Designing Web Pages just finished their websites on their favorite musical artist, using either Wix.com, Wordpress.com or Weebly.com to make their website. They are starting some graphic design for use on websites; they will be learning how to use Adobe Photoshop for pictures and Adobe Premiere for videos. The students also will have access to digital cameras and video cameras, including a Go Pro camera, to do this. Computer Applications will be finishing up Microsoft Excel and then move on to lessons in Microsoft PowerPoint. PROM Sandwich High School’s Prom will be on Friday, April 24, from 4:30-11:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the Prom Walk at the high school, where spectators can see the students walk down the front entrance of the school after having their names announced. Bleacher seating will be available on a first come, first served basis. (Bleacher seating is VERY limited.) Spring Break is now over and the CTE classes are gearing up for the final SHS News 9 Prom Walk begins promptly at 4:30 p.m. and will be finished by 6:00 p.m. Parking is available for spectators at IVVC, Haskin or Sandwich Middle School. Please do not park at the church across the street as this interferes with Saturday night services. Students will then be transported to Lincoln Inn in Batavia via chartered buses. Coronation of this year’s king and queen will be at Lincoln Inn. (Voting for Prom Court will take place April 13.) There will be no post-prom event this year. Instead, the Post Prom Committee has made a generous donation to allow the students to enjoy an extended prom. There will be a Prom meeting for all SHS students attending Prom on Thursday, April 23, during 4th hour to discuss parking, Prom Walk, etc. Any other questions can be addressed at that time. If you have questions, please call Mrs. Frantzen at 815-786-2157. IVVC Students of the Month Congrats to our March 2015 IVVC Students of the Month. The criteria for recognition include qualities such as outstanding professional work, enthusiasm, attendance, initiative and demonstrated work ethic. March 2015 Austin Crabbe Sean Coakley Mackenzie Kolka Wyatt Knoble Haley Lange Auto Body Repair Graphic Design & Digital Technology Health Occupations-CNA Welding and Fabrication Health OccupationsExploring Medical Careers SHS News 10 On March 14, DCP/SAFE students learned that we won first place for our district in the Operation Teen Safe Driving Project. As a result, we received an invitation to participate in the Ford Ride and Drive Event at Cellular Field on Thursday, April 30. At this event, all students who attend will get to complete several safe driving training courses including texting and driving, impaired driving, proper reaction time and spin control. We also received funds for the extended Prom to provide materials to support making good choices for the evening. On March 18, DCP/Safe also participated in the National Kick Butts Day Even. In the morning, students wrote stats and facts on the sidewalks leading to the school. The information included reasons not to smoke, reasons to quit smoking and the effects on our breathing. If someone is a smoker, just minutes after quitting, the body can start to heal. Fifteen years after quitting, the risk of dying and the risk of heart disease is that of a nonsmoker. So for everyone out there, if you currently smoke, we would like to encourage you to seriously think about quitting and the positive effects it will have on you and those around you We also did the “Not a Replacement” activity. Statistics show that if a person does not start smoking by the time they are 20, they are likely to never start. Tobacco companies know this, so their advertisements target teens and young adults to replace the thousands of smokers who die every day. Several SHS students wrote a message to let tobacco companies know that they are not a replacement. SHS News 11 During the month of April, one of our main topics that we are covering at the high school will be Alcohol Awareness! Each April since 1987, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Inc. (NCADD) sponsors NCADD Alcohol Awareness Month to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma and encourage local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues. At SHS, we are going to be conducting awareness activities including posters around school and facts during the daily announcements. Below are some of the most commonly known facts about alcohol use and teenagers. Alcohol is the number one drug of choice for America's young people, and is more likely to kill young people than all illegal drugs combined. Each day, 7,000 kids in the United States under the age of 16 take their first drink. Those who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who begin at age 21. More than 1,700 college students in the U.S. are killed each year—about 4.65 a day—as a result of alcohol-related injuries. 25% of U.S. children are exposed to alcohol-use disorders in their family. Underage alcohol use costs the nation an estimated $62 billion annually. If you would like more information on alcohol use or alcoholism, please go to www.ncadd.org and search their website for information on what to tell your student and learn ways to prevent your child from engaging in negative behaviors. April is also Stress Awareness Month! So take time for yourself and engage in positive activities that you enjoy that help you to relieve stress. Some suggestions are to go for a walk since the weather will be improving, share a laugh with a good friend or two, play a game with your family, sit down with a good book, or even color a picture using your favorite crayons! And April 22 is Earth Day, so do something positive to help our planet! Plant a tree, recycle, and turn off electric items that are not being used. For more information on how you can support Earth Day, visit earthday.org! SHS News 12 On Friday, April 24, many of our students will be participating in Prom. DCP/SAFE reminds everyone to stay safe and make good choices as you plan your pre- and post-prom activities. Here are some suggestions on how to have a safe Prom experience. Make sure that you avoid parties where there will be alcohol or other behaviors that make you uncomfortable. Figure out what you would say to someone encouraging you to engage in an unhealthy behaviour, like drinking alcohol, now instead of trying to figure something out the moment you are asked. Parents, make sure you talk to your child who is attending prom and know what the plans are for the night and encourage your child to make positive choices so a bad situation is less likely to occur. For more information on how to have a safe prom night, go to www.dosomething.org/tipsandtools/how-survive-prom-without-drinking.
