Message from the SCRS Board Chair

Thank you to everyone who attended our AGM last month. We are very excited to welcome
a new board member, Alicia Singroy. Always great to be able to offer fantastic opportunities
to the residents of Saprae Creek. We will be offering a second class of yoga in the week at
Vista Ridge and will be having our Family Tubing Event and the return of Family Movie Night
this month. Always watch for the invitation to these events on our Saprae Creek Residents
Society Facebook Page and if you are new out here and want to be added, please message
one of the admins letting us know your address so that we can add you as this page is for
residents ONLY. We always appreciate a heads up if you notice someone who does not live
out here on our page. If there are any activities or events that you might be interested in
running in Saprae Creek, please put together a proposal and present your plan to the board at
our monthly meeting and we will be happy to fund your event. As our board is made up of
volunteers, even if you do not feel that you have the time to commit to our monthly meetings,
we never say no to anyone from the community who wants to add to the events that we offer
in Sapare Creek.
I wanted to take the chance to thank our skating coaches from Vista Ridge. Sean, Kevin,
Matt, Alex and Sam were fantastic with the kids and it was awesome to watch their progress
through the 8 classes. We have had some large signs made with our specific Family Skating
times in hopes that there is no confusion as to when our families are able to skate at the rink.
The Love Bug Ball was again the highlight of February, Melanie
Reddy and crew put together a great night of dancing and fun for
the families in Saprae Creek. Thanks
It has been great watching the kids, teens and adults take part
in the Taekwondo classes here in Saprae Creek. It is never too
late to register and remember the first class is always FREE to
try. If you attend the second class you are always free to attend
the kicking boxing class right after at no additional charge.
I am hoping Spring is around the corner, til next month……...
Councillor’s Corner - March 2015

Looks like March is set to come in like a lamb, coordinating that with the
ground hog from February 2nd and all indications are that we might have a
nice early spring, and that would be good.
The sooner the ground thaws, the sooner the crews can get to work with
sewer, water, road and ditch upgrades. Administration has laid out an
ambitious schedule that they believe will see all Saprae Creek work done by
end of 2016, and all Draper work done by 2017.
Concerning any environmental issues that residents encounter, and specifically the ‘rotten egg’
smell of hydrogen sulfide, I am inserting the comments of our Environmental Services Director
Kevin Scoble below:
An environmental issue, including odors can be called into Alberta Environment and
Sustainable Resource Development at their hotline 24 hours/day at
1-800-222-6514. In the case of odors, the local office can and often does, mobilize the
local Wood Buffalo Environmental Association (WBEA) van which can monitor air quality, including H2S.
Sometimes odorized natural gas, containing mercaptans, can also smell like H2S or if
the resident thinks they have a gas leak, they should call ATCO gas (24 hour number for
gas odors, ruptures, no heat, is 1-800-511-3447).
They can also always call RMWB Pulse (780-743-7000), it goes through the main
switchboard during business hours and through the Fire Department after hours and
they will contact the applicable department or in the case of an emergency after hours,
dispatch RES directly, who have hazardous material response capability. The Pulse can
also contact Environmental Services and/or Sustainable Operations and we will call
AESRD if it turns out be an environmental issue, as it is not really our jurisdiction. We
usually do this a few times a year on calls from the public.
There’s not really any federal numbers to call, they don’t really have any
jurisdiction. For example if there is a dangerous goods spill on 69, even though its
federal legislation, its administered provincially and AESRD through the number above
will dispatch provincial TDG personnel or their own emergency response team, and
likely our RES.

Of course Saprae has the Lynton siding there which receives sulphur which could be a
source of H2S odors, but often muskeg when dug up and warming in the spring can
produce these odors (some H2S can build up from natural anaerobic (lack of oxygen)
decomposition). That could have been a contributor with the warming trend this past
weekend and ongoing construction in the area, or someone may have had an issue with
their septic field.
I would note the human nose is an excellent early warning device. The 8 hour
occupational exposure limit for H2S is 10 parts per million, but the Alberta Environment
aesthetic objective (concentration at which it can be a nuisance odor) is 10 parts per
billion, much, much lower. Different humans have different sensitivities and many
people can find H2S odors irritating in the 2- 5 parts per billion range. So smelling it
doesn’t necessarily mean there is an immediate health risk, but if something is
smelled, it would be prudent for the resident to contact one of the numbers above to
have it checked out.Kevin.
So, thank you Kevin for a detailed look at this issue of odors that someone might smell and
what to do about it. Please report odors that you smell and cannot explain.
Concerning enforcement of our heavy truck by-law, I understand from various reports that the
message from the by-law people that attended at Vista Ridge the other evening did not line up
with the commitment that I reported to you that we had from the CAO and senior management
to proceed with enforcement of this by-law. I am furious about this mixed messaging and have
spoken with the CAO about it. He has promised to ensure that the message about proceeding
to enforce will be clearly articulated to the ‘boots on the ground’ as it were.
It is very frustrating for me that what persists at the RMWB is a very clear disconnection
between what Council directs and senior management commits to and then what actually gets
done by our operational staff. I had a full airing of this issue with the CAO and will continue to
follow up on it with Council because until what we at a governance level direct our
Administration to do actually gets done as we have directed,
we are going to continue to flounder.

Bowman’s Taekwondo is coming to Saprae Creek!
The Saprae Creek Residents Society is pleased to announce that Bowman’s Taekwondo is coming to
Saprae Creek! Your SCRS is subsidizing this program, to provide Saprae Creek Residents with this
opportunity, which is great FOR ALL AGES! Vista Ridge has graciously allowed us to use their ski lodge
lobby for these classes!
Location: Vista Ridge Main Lobby
SUNDAYS

6pm – 7pm
4 to 7 year olds

7pm – 8pm
8 year olds and up (YES TEENS & ADULTS WELCOME!)

8pm – 9pm
Kick-boxing
Membership fees:
Students aged 4 to 8 class is $50 / month all other classes $75 / month
(direct withdrawals from your account) – this covers the weekly Sunday evening sessions.
$115.95 / month - Children, if you also want to attend sessions at Bowman’s downtown Dojang
$125.95 / month – Adults, if you also want to attend sessions at Bowman’s downtown Dojang
Uniforms:
Bowman’s will take uniform orders on an ongoing basis. Try a class to make sure you like it, and then order your uniform.
Equipment:
The Saprae Creek Residents Society will be covering the cost of additional training equipment .
Bring a void cheque, as Bowman’s will arrange for direct billing to your bank account for the monthly
fee.
Bring a bottle of water, you are going to need it!
