Page 1 of 6 Workshop Descriptions: Success Tips Straight from the UT Kitchen Garden – This tour will explore our purple kitchen garden. See what we have “growing” on and get a few ideas to try something new in your home kitchen garden. Kitchen Garden Manager, Holly Jones, will be able to answer questions and give you some tips to keep your vegetables growing organically. Water-‐wise succulents are high on style! -‐ Easy care and so uniquely beautiful, succulents provide high style when potted in containers, rock gardens, paths and challenging dry spots in the garden. A fabulous trend is to use succulents in all types of decorative or unique, unusual containers. Come learn some of the best and new succulents that you can use in creating your own unique plantings. Tabletop Aquaponics -‐ Learn to grow fish and plants in harmony with a simple and relatively inexpensive tabletop system. Amanda Plante will provide some tips for success, a demonstration, and answer questions. Good for indoor garden enthusiasts and teachers. See What’s Sprouting – Join UT Gardens staff on a walk through the UT Gardens. Learn about all the new projects and future additions to the Gardens and get a few ideas to try out in your home garden. Field Sketching in the Gardens -‐ Join us as we observe and sketch unique spring flowers around the gardens. Simply using a chalk pastel and paper, learn to do quick gesture drawings and value studies that are the basis for great drawings and paintings. CSI for Tennessee Smart Yards-‐ What’s that bug? - There are many insects, spiders, mites, fungi, bacteria, viruses and critters which are trying to outsmart a TN Smart Yard.
Step one is identification of the criminal (pest). Tom Stebbins, Hamilton County Extension Agent, will look at several crime scenes ( samples) and discuss ways to control or stop the offense. The class will show the many resources available to the homeowner. Growing Summer's Favorite Vegetables – Gardening expert, author and local radio personality John Tullock offers the best tips and techniques for growing the most popular summer vegetables. His presentation will cover beans, corn, cucumbers, okra, peppers, summer squash, and tomatoes. Ample time will be allotted for answering questions from the audience. Dreams of Beautiful Bulbs – Stay out of the summer heat and start planning for bulbs. Get advice from Knox County Master Gardeners, Angela Otey & Linda Mason, on when to order and plant bulbs for every season plus how to care for and correctly divide your existing bulbs. Natural Diversity: Your Yard Matters – Learn from Dennis Gregg, Executive Director for the Obed Watershed Community, about how to manage and remove invasive species that disrupt the natural food web and habitat of your yard. Page 2 of 6 Composting: Hot or Cold; Fast or Easy – Join the Knox County Master Gardeners, Marsha Lehman & Amy Haun, to learn the basics of making compost that’s good for your garden and spares you the expense of buying soil amendments. The Benefits of Bees -‐ While honey bees are best for pollination, there are a lot of native bees that can add to the beauty and productivity of your garden. Come learn about some of native stars as well as the basics for beekeeping! This session will be led by Entomology and Plant Pathology Masters student and beekeeper Heather Lowery. Rainscaping your Smart Yard -‐ Rain gardens offer a way to create an attractive landscape while also reducing localized flooding and improving water quality. Dr. Ludwig, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science, will present how rain gardens function, the many benefits they offer and provide a snapshot of how they are installed. Straw Bale Gardening -‐ Straw bales can be used to create a biodegradable, weed-‐free, soil-‐less planter for annual vegetables, herbs and flowers. Join local garden author John Tullock and UT kitchen garden manager Holly Jones for a demonstration and discussion of this increasingly popular gardening method. New hydrangeas for the home gardener -‐ Hydrangeas are one of the most popular woody ornamental landscape plants for the residential landscape. Home gardeners have a variety of options in plant size, color, shape, and cultural requirements within the Hydrangea genus. Recent commercial releases and new USDA varieties promise to bring the beauty of hydrangeas to any home landscape. Dr. Lisa Alexander, research geneticist with the USDA U.S. National Arboretum will be sharing some of the research work that she has been taking part in to produce new hydrangeas. Pervious Paver Systems for Your Home Landscape -‐ Pervious paver systems offer a way to add aesthetically appealing walkways, patios and driveways without contributing to water issues like ponding on your property. Darryl Sapp, Belgard Hardscape Consultant, will discuss how these systems function, their benefits, and how they are installed. Succession Planting – Multiply the harvest from your vegetable garden by starting a Fall garden in July...no kidding! Knox County Master Gardener, Marsh Lehman, will show you how plan your garden for harvests well beyond Thanksgiving. Growing Orchids – Join Rosalie Peters, president of the Smokey Mountain Orchid Society as she teach the ins and outs of growing orchids in your home. Which Rain Barrel is Right for You? -‐ Rain barrels provide a free source of water for your gardens and other landscape needs. Come and learn from Ruth Anne Hanahan, TN Water Resources Research Center Senior Research Association, about the pros and cons of commercial and homemade barrels and how to install and maintain them.
