Course Fees and Funding
The majority of courses contained within this prospectus are
funded through the Learning and Skills Council. This means
that the fees a student pays represents only a proportion of
the actual cost of the course. Government funding policy is
now requiring students to contribute more towards the cost
of their learning and the College is required to increase its
fees accordingly.

completed form to the Adult and Community Learning Centre,
Connaught Road, Hove, BN3 3WB enclosing either a cheque made
payable to CCBH or your credit/debit card details (including expiry
date and security code - last 3 numbers on back of card and issue

Reservation. Unfortunately we are unable to acknowledge receipt
of your form by post unless this is provided.

You will be asked to complete a Reservation Form and payment
will be due at this point. Please ensure you have all your details
with you including evidence of entitlement to fee remission (if
applicable).

Please note that we shall not contact you between enrolment and
the first meeting of the class unless:
• A course is already full when we receive your application.
• The course is cancelled.
• We need to give you special advice in advance.
You should therefore ensure that you keep a note of the start date
and time of the course and go directly to the class/reception at the
first session. Receipts are available for collection from the Office
at the Connaught Adult and Community Learning Centre. Please
note that telephone lines will be particularly busy at peak
enrolment times and reservations by post or in person are
recommended at these times.

How do I pay?
You can pay by cheque, Mastercard, Visa or Debit card. When
paying in person you may also pay in cash.
Do I qualify for a reduction in fees?
There are a range of concessions available on some of our courses.
Please see section on Course Fees for full details.
Will you confirm my place on the course?
After your enrolment has been made we will only contact you again
should we have to cancel or change the course in any way. In some
circumstances we will send out a materials list of items you need
to provide for the first class. If you enrol by post please enclose an
SAE for your receipt to be posted to you.
What happens if I can’t attend the course any more?
The College operates a strict ‘no refund’ policy from your time of
payment at the reservation stage. Refunds will only be considered
if a course has been cancelled by the College.
Parking - where do I park?
There is limited parking at all venues (some car parks may be
subject to an entrance fee). Please park with care and
consideration at all times and follow specific instructions given by
individual venues. Emergency Vehicles must be able to gain
access to any building at all times.
Access - can I get in?
If you have particular access needs please contact the Centre prior
to enrolment.
Liability - whose fault is it?
You attend all courses at your own risk. If you are on Sports, Keep
Fit, Yoga and Massage courses in particular you must not only
satisfy yourself that you are medically suitable* for your chosen
course but also notify the Course Tutor of any relevant medical
condition you might have. (*You should consult with your GP).
Must I take an exam/assessment?
If you enrol on courses leading to qualifications you are expected
to enter or register for the examination/assessment at the
appropriate time. Most examination fees will be included in your
course fees unless otherwise stated.
What else do I have to pay for?
You are expected to provide yourself with the appropriate books
and materials for your courses. In some circumstances these may
be available from the Course Tutor or the Centre.
What happens if my course hasn’t got enough
enrolments?
Courses in this brochure may be cancelled if minimum enrolment
numbers (generally 15) are not achieved and/or maintained
through the duration of the course. Students may be offered the
alternative of a reduction in course hours for the same fee, transfer
to another course or request a pro rata refund of the fee.

Whether you want to study during the day, evening or just on the
occasional Saturday you are sure to find a programme that suits
you from our huge offer of both accredited and leisure courses.
Options for accredited study are clearly marked against each
course but if you are still unsure then please contact our
enrolment staff for advice and help.
Accredited courses lead to NCFE Certification in Creative Craft.
There is no formal examination but students are required to keep
a portfolio and progress diary of their work throughout the duration
of the course. Certification is graded at Level 1 (Beginners), Level
2 (Intermediate) and Level 3 (Advanced). Your tutor will assess
which level to enter you at as you progress through your course.
Courses with codes A are 30 week leisure courses where fees can
be paid termly. (It may be possible to join the course in January or
April subject to space and topic.)
If you are interested in expanding your knowledge in a different
form of creativity, abstract art is now generally understood to mean
art that does not depict objects in the natural world, but instead
uses colour and form in a non-representational way. We will use
acrylic, watercolour, gouache and inks during the sessions and
there is also scope to utilise collage or different media to create
abstract images. Bring whatever paints you choose and some
paper or a sketchbook.

Learning to Look at Modern Art
1 day
Venue
Focusing on many fascinating and often very beautiful images and
objects, students examine some of the most important ideas and
events in the Modernist period. We will look at the Arts and Crafts
movement, reactions against modern life in ‘primitivism’ and Dada
and explore the unconscious in Symbolist Klimt and Surrealists
such as Dali and Magritte. We will also use Tate Modern
contemporary art as an example to explore the art of the 70s, 80s
and 90s in Europe and the United States, looking at the
relationship between popular media, commodity culture and art
forms in the late twentieth century. Student involvement in
discussion about works of art is encouraged.
This 10 week course will look at altering books with art work,
creating scrapbooks, making cards and Artist Trading Cards from
found materials and mixed media, including paper, paint and
fabrics. Nothing will get wasted! A great course for magpies and
collectors alike. Start collecting now and be prepared to have fun.
Students will be expected to bring some materials with them and
may want to purchase items during the course.

The following 3 workshops are suitable for any level of experience,
even complete beginners. They can be attended by a single
person, couples or friends. The yoga is inspired by the life and
practice of Vanda Scaravelli. She emphasised the possibility of
liberating the spine by using freely flowing breath and our
relationship to the ground. It is not a system. The meditation
techniques used come form the Buddhist tradition. In Thai
massage, the yoga tradition and the Buddhist paths come together
as one. Please bring a mat, blanket and block/pillow to class.

These three practices are closely interconnected if not
inseparable. Gentle and explorative yoga movements help you get
in touch with your own physical experience while also showing you
how to undo blockages and holdings on. Meditation helps you to
stay clear and also able to be present with whatever is going on
here and now. Simple massage techniques allows you to support
both your own and also another persons further ability to let go of
tension on many levels of their being. Please bring a mat, blanket

So much of how we communicate is non-verbal! Much more than
we imagine. Welcome to explore how to playfully connect both
with ourselves and with others through fun and simple yoga
partner work. You will be invited to undo both physical and
emotional tension during the day. We begin with gentle yoga
movements on our own, exploring how the spine relates to the
earth and the breath in its own way. Then come together in pairs
for some time and once again back to our own experience. Please
bring a mat, blanket and block/pillow to class.
Yoga, Meditation + Thai Massage - Saturday

Exploring how to move with more awareness using simple yoga
movements. We are especially interested in how the body relates
to the ground, gravity, in an intelligent way. When we stop resisting
tension is released on a deep level of our being. You will be
encouraged to develop a gentle moment-to-moment attention. In
this way a state of meditation moves in. Periods of stillness will
show you how the mind too is able to let go. Please bring a mat,

This fascinating course will enable you to treat family and friends
safely and effectively with ear candles. These simple tools offer a
natural way to induce a deep state of relaxation and clear and
rebalance the ear, nose and throat area. They are ideal for
assisting with a variety of conditions including stress, sinus and
nasal congestion, hay-fever, imbalance due to flying/scuba diving
and much more. Ear candles are herb infused cotton and beeswax
tubes that are placed in the ear and lit. The herbal infused vapour
and warmth created by the flame travels down the candle, gently
warming the ear and surrounding areas, encouraging blood supply,
tissue and muscle relaxation, assisting in softening and loosening
excess wax and aiding the body’s natural healing and clearing
processes. This course will cover use of candles, facial massage
and sinus point work. Learners will be working on each other. 1
pair of candles will be provided per student at a cost of £5. Oils

The Development of English Society 1870-1970
in Word and Image
A new and exciting vision of domestic history as revealed in
literature and the moving image: experiencing the progress of
social life in novels, as well as in non-fiction, and on film. This
course will consider interpretations of cultural, social and local
history as portrayed in visual images - words and pictures. We look
at mainly cultural changes across the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries in society and everyday life, although we also consider
the impact these had on life as a whole. We will experience the
progress of social, cultural and domestic life as seen in novels,
poetry and film, paintings, house layouts and other visual
documents, as well as looking at non-fiction and documentaries
for comparison. We will observe the visual experience of change in
architecture, domestic life and working conditions, technology,
women’s status, leisure activities, fashion and style and the arts.
We will particularly consider aspects and trends of the sixty years
1910-1970, during which time there was a rise in the popularity
of literature of all kinds, including novels, manuals and
magazines, especially for women. This period also encompasses
the development of cinema and its huge influence on every aspect
of daily living from architecture to furniture, fashion and cultural
activities. The cinematic experience exposed various ways of life
to different sections of society as viewed in particular genre of
film; for example crime, which portrayed a segment of society to
the middle classes. It also revealed high living and the distinctive
style of Art Deco to the working class.
Local history as portrayed in films such as Pink String and Sealing
Wax and Brighton Rock depicted the seaside, fishing, housing,
pubs, hotels and criminals in late Victorian and Thirties Brighton.
Patrick Hamilton’s novel The West Pier, gave a good view of social
life and behaviour in the town in the 1930’s.The course will be
illustrated with readings, extracts from novels, non-fiction, period
diaries, journals and newspapers, prints and illustrations,
architectural plans, film clips and video. Book lists available from
the tutor.

By her early twenties Jane had written several novels, much prose
and numerous letters, and we view her Regency England world of
Bath, Portsmouth, great country houses, vicarages and other
places and their people, as delightfully described in her works;
including a visit to Brighton to view the fashionable parading
grounds, assembly halls, shops and seaside (Lydia, in “Pride and
Prejudice” was much taken by the many soldiers in the town). The
Prince Regent was a great admirer - she was no admirer of him!
We see how “Emma” came to be dedicated to the prince. A
charming afternoon entertainment.

The Whiplash Curve - Edwardian Art Nouveau - Saturday
1300-1600 Sarah Tobias
CON
£15
Christmas festivities, legends and heart-warming tales, folklore
and amusing anecdotes of Sussex, from Medieval Winchelsea to
1920’s Rye; a late-Victorian Shepherd’s Christmas at Falmer to
dinner and tea for a large family gathering in a small cottage in
Rottingdean. The Boxgrove Tipteers (mummers) used to sing their
way across the countryside, blowing cow’s horns to announce their
arrival and then would entertain in large, country houses. Stories
of shepherds on the downlands, waits and carol singers, farmers,
Pooh Bear, gifts, ‘Going-a-Gooding’ and ghostly hauntings. A
cheerful afternoon to brighten your day.

This iconic style with its flowing, asymmetrical lines was found in
everything from art, architecture, furniture, fashion, jewellery,
ceramics, metalwork and glass. It followed on directly from
Victorian Arts & Crafts and was in response to radical changes and
technological advances. Highly decorative, with undulating,
flowing forms, waves and the famous ‘whiplash curve’, its organic
structure was influenced by many styles, folklore, ancient and
classical countries, plant forms, floral and leaf patterns, insectsespecially the dragon fly; long flowing tendrils of hair and
entwined foliage. A fabulous feast of colour illustrated with
masses of illustrations and some period artefacts.

Theatre entertainments covered a wide genre - from legitimate
theatre to circus and boisterous music hall, as well as sparkling
social comedies, such as Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being
Earnest’. Favourite music hall songs told a story and reflected the
social history of the period. Popular songs included: ‘The Boy in
the Gallery’, ‘Oh! Mr Porter’ and ‘Joshuah’ and stars of the music
hall, such as Marie Lloyd, were famous. Female impersonators
dressed in elegant male attire to sing of ‘Burlington Bertie’ and
others, and Champagne Charlie was an example of early
advertising! A very jolly afternoon treat.

A short introduction to the many changes of fashion throughout
history, mainly of women’s clothing and with emphasis on the
18th-20th centuries. Georgians were great shoppers - Ludgate Hill
and Regents Street were fashionable areas of London in which to
shop - and the Edwardians made shopping a leisure time activity,
particularly with the opening of Selfridges Department Store in
1909. Styles of clothing and underwear changed rapidly and some
of it was elegant, practical, silly or constricting. Items of Victorian,
1920’s/30’s and 50’s costume, as well as many illustrations make
this afternoon great fun.

After the war there was a fascinating phase of filmmaking,
described as ‘gritty realism’, ‘angry young men’ or ‘kitchen sink
drama’ (more associated with theatre), often based on books of the
same title and described as ‘New Wave’, which showed everyday
life and ordinary people. Generally set in the North the young,
male protagonist fights against class distinction and wants to
‘better himself’ in films such as “Room at the Top”, “Saturday
Night and Sunday Morning” and “A Kind of Loving”. An
interesting exploration of society as reflected on film and a filmfeast for film-lovers on St. Valentine’s Day.

After WWI a new, very distinctive style emerged, directly following
Art Nouveau. Architectural buildings of every type from churches
to cinemas, houses, bus stations, garages and lidos were
developed in this style which was influenced by earlier, Ancient
Egyptian, Greek and neo-classical forms. The smooth lines and
geometric patterns were found in everything from art to fashion,
furniture, light fittings, ornaments, glass, ceramics and jewellery.
Cinema and film included elegant sets and flowing dresses and
the style reached its height of fashion in the Hollywood musical.
A glamourous, elegant treat including period artefacts.

We aim to make learning a language as fun and informative as
possible by organising and offering extra-curricular activities
during the course of the academic year. Regular activities include
weekly Language Clubs (subject to demand) held at external
venues where learners can practice their chosen language with
native speakers, play games and participate in quizzes using that
language. A week during the year is given over to celebrating
culture and language where students enjoy participating in plays,
dancing, food and wine tasting and also watching films in their
chosen language. Each year learners are given the opportunity to
join a trip abroad - we have so far visited Gran Canaria, Cuba,
Valencia and Nice.
Whether you want to study during the day, evening or just on the
occasional Saturday you are sure to find a programme that suits
you from our huge offer of both accredited and leisure courses.
Options for study are clearly marked against each course but if you
are still unsure then please contact our enrolment staff for advice

Data Protection
Please ensure you read the statement below from the College.
The College collects information about all its staff and learners for various administrative, academic and health and safety
reasons. Because of the Data Protection Act 1998, we need your consent before we can do this.
LSC Data Protection Statement
Data Protection Act 1998 - The information you provide will be passed to the Learning and Skills Council (the LSC). The
LSC is responsible for funding, planning and encouraging education and training for young people and adults in England,
and is registered under the Data Protection Act 1998. The information you provide will be shared with other organisations
for the purpose of administration, careers and other guidance, and statistical and research purposes. Other organisations
with which we will share information include, the Department for Education and Skills, Connexions, Higher Education
Statistics Agency, Higher Education Funding Council for England, educational institutions and organisations performing
research and statistical work on behalf of the LSC or its partners. The LSC also administers the learner registration service
(LRS) which will use your information to created and maintain a unique learner number (ULN). The LSC is also a cofinancing organisation and uses European Social Funds from the European Union to directly or indirectly part-finance
learning activities, helping develop employment by promoting employability, business spirit and equal opportunities, and
investing in human resources. Further information about partner organisations and the ULN and what they do, may be found
at www.lsc.gov.uk/providers/Data/help/ and by following the links to data protection.
At no time will your personal information be passed to organisations for marketing or sales purposes. From time to time
students are approached to take part in surveys by mail and phone, which are aimed at enabling the LSC and its partners
to monitor performance, improve quality and plan future provision.
Fair Processing Notice
The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) also administers the Managing Information Across Partners (MIAP) Programme on
behalf of the MIAP membership. More information about MIAP membership can be found at www.miap.gov.uk.
LSC is responsible for the development and operation of the Learner Registration Service (LRS) and also the creation of a
learner record. For learners of 13 years and over, identification information will be passed to the LRS to create and maintain
a unique learner number (ULN). In addition, participation and achievement information will be passed to the MIAP Service
to create and maintain a learner record.
The MIAP Service will enable, for the first time, a learner to have direct access to information held about them which
learners are able to challenge, if appropriate. The Learner Registration Service will enable organisations allowed by Law and
detailed at www.miap.gov.uk to access the ULN and integrate it into their systems. In addition, such organisations will have
access to the participation and achievement information attributed to each ULN and thereby saving individuals having to
supply the same information repeatedly to different organisations. Individuals are able to opt-out of sharing participation
and achievement information in their learner record with those organisations detailed at www.miap.gov.uk, if they so wish.
Details of how to opt-out can also be found at www.miap.gov.uk or by telephoning 0845 6022589.
