Business-Friendly City
The Los Angeles County Economic
Development Corporation (LAEDC) has
announced that the City of Paramount is a
ﬁnalist for its 2013 Most Business-Friendly
City in Los Angeles County Award in the
population-50,000-and-over category.
For a more detailed look at the factors that
led to our nomination, please see this issue’s
CityScape on the inside back cover.
The other nominees in our category
are Glendora, Lancaster, Pico Rivera, and
Santa Monica. The winners will be announced at the 18th Annual Eddy Awards
on November 14th.

Did you know that you can pay your
Paramount water bill online through your
bank’s website?
A lot of people pay their bills online these
days, electronically transferring funds from
their bank account.
You can do the same with your water account. Just set up the City of Paramount as a
“payee” with your online bill-paying mechanism. Then, each time you get a bill from
the water utility, go to the bank website and
authorize payment. It’s as simple as that.

Thanksgiving Dinner
Here’s an early reminder to mark Thursday, November 21st on your calendar for the
annual Seniors Thanksgiving Dinner. It takes
place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Paramount
Park gym.
This is a great event that always provides
a day of fun and friendship, a chance for folks
to visit, catch up, and share nice meal.

Enter the Library’s Bookmark Contest
The Paramount branch of the Los Angeles
County Library system will be taking part
in the annual bookmark contest, with this
year’s theme being “Read, Seek, Explore!
Leer Buscar, Explorar!”
The contest is for children and their
families and highlights the wonder and importance of books and reading. Entry forms
are available at the library, at 16254 Colorado
Ave. Kids can enter their designs in the following age groups: kindergarten through 2nd
grade; 3rd grade through 5th grade; 6th grade
through 8th grade; and 9th grade through
12th grade.
The deadline to enter is Saturday, October 19th, and the winners at the local library
will be announced on Saturday, November
16th. They will then move onto the regional
contest, whose winners will be announced in
February, 2014, be published on the County
Library website, and printed for distribution
throughout the county.

Keep Recycling That Used Motor Oil
Paramount residents have done a magniﬁcent job when it comes to recycling used
motor oil and oil ﬁlters. In fact, we’re more
than doubling the amounts every year: During ﬁscal year 2010-2011, for example, it
was 2,000 gallons; ﬁscal year 2011-2012,
more than 5,580 gallons; and for the ﬁscal
year ending June 2013, the jump was to a
phenomenal 12,300 gallons.

Motor oil poured onto the ground or into
storm drains (or even tossed into trash cans in
a sealed container) contaminates and pollutes
the soil, groundwater, rivers, and the ocean.
On top of that … it’s just illegal.
But dirty motor oil can be cleaned up and
used again. And there are easy ways to get
rid of the spent lubricant, as well as the dirty
ﬁlters, in Paramount.
There are two convenient Certiﬁed Collection Centers in town. (It’s a good idea to
call before taking oil and ﬁlters to the listed
centers.) They are:

You can get free “care packages” that
come with a collection container, a funnel and

Here are some tips for recycling your
used motor oil:
• Do not mix oil with anything else; contaminated oil is not accepted.
• Carry oil in clean, non-breakable containers
– not metal containers.
• Do not mix oil with bleach, paint, solvents
or automotive ﬂuids.
• Maximum container size accepted is 5
gallons.
• Maximum drop-off is 20 gallons per day.

The next Good Neighbor Program – a free seminar for Paramount rental property
owners and managers – will be held Saturday, October 19. The workshop will take place
at the Clearwater Building in the Civic Center from 10:00 a.m. till 2:30 p.m. Lunch will
be provided.

Those taking part will receive the program’s certiﬁcation and seal of approval that can
help attract quality tenants.
The classes are offered in conjunction with the Apartment Association of Southern
Cities, the Sheriff’s Department, and attorneys specializing in landlord/tenant law. Topics cover such areas as tenant screening, evicting problem tenants, developing effective
rental agreements, and recognizing criminal activity, all in an effort to keep your property
crime free.
The program aims to enhance the quality of life for residents, create higher tenant
satisfaction rates, and remove unlawful tenants. The effort also increases a property’s longterm proﬁtability for the owner, lowers maintenance costs, and establishes close contact
between the owner/manager, the City, and the Sheriff’s Department.
Property owners who successfully complete the program may receive a one-year free
membership in the Apartment Association of Southern Cities and a one-year waiver of
their City business license fees.

Halloween Safety Tips
Below are some tips to help make Halloween fun and safe for all.
• Going Trick-or-Treating?
• Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and ﬂexible.
• Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.
• Fasten reﬂective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
• Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them.
• Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
• Hold a ﬂashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always walk
and don’t run from house to house.
• Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever
possible.
• Wear well-ﬁtting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.
• Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult.
• Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear ﬂame-resistant costumes.

To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, remove anything a child could trip over
from the porch or front yard such as garden hoses, toys, bikes, and lawn decorations.
Check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs. Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.
Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers,
then parents can do the cutting.
Consider using a ﬂashlight or a glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin.
If you do use a candle, a votive candle is the safest.
Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other
ﬂammable objects, and should never be left unattended.
Make sure you set a time that your kids should be home by. Make sure they know how
important it is for them to be home on time or to call immediately if something happens
and they are going to be delayed.
Know the route your kids will be taking if you aren’t going with them. Let them know
that they are to check in with you every hour, by phone or by stopping back at home.
Make sure that they know not to deviate from the planned route so that you always know
where they will be.
And remember that the City of Paramount will be hosting its annual free Halloween
Carnival on Thursday, October 31, starting at 6:00 p.m. for a supervised environment
full of fun activities and plenty of candy. It will be at Paramount Park, located at 14400

Ken Cannon from Nova Storage gave
some great insight to the world of Storage. Who uses storage? Pretty much,
everyone. Storage is a big business with
people and business from all over using
it for different purposes.
There are different types of storage
containers in different sizes. When
looking at sizes, know how much you
will be storing so that you don’t get one
too large or too small. There are even
storage sites that store vehicles either in
parking areas or inside a container.
Things to remember when looking
for a storage place for yourself:
Make a plan - what are you storing?
When will you need to access your
storage? This will determine where on
the lot you may want it. How long will
you need it? Maybe you can negotiate
fees if you pay up front, or are there any
specials? Is there security on the lot?
How safe will your stuff be but more
importantly do you feel safe going there
at different hours?
There is a lot to consider when looking for storage but with some advance
planning the perfect unit can be found.

El Camino College Compton Center Names
2013 Distinguished Faculty and Staff
El Camino College Compton Center
recently announced its honorees for the 2013
Distinguished Faculty and Staff awards at
the Annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation
Breakfast, an event designed to thank all
members of the campus community for their
commitment to ECC Compton Center and
its educational mission. Vanessa Haynes,
academic counselor; Dustin Black, adjunct
history professor; and Alice Hawkins, staff
member, were recognized for their dedication to ECC Compton Center students and
to their professions.
Vanessa Haynes, recipient of the Distinguished Faculty award, has served as
an academic counselor at ECC Compton
Center since 1998. A respected counselor
who is valued by her colleagues for her
energy and enthusiasm, Haynes is known
for her commitment to innovation and her
passion for student success. She guides
students by developing individual education plans, recommending workshops, and
teaching Human Development courses.
According to students and peers, Haynes
is regarded as passionate about education
and goes above and beyond to help students
prepare for graduation. She also provides
support to veterans, counseling them on the
regulations and process for certiﬁcation for
Veteran Education Beneﬁts. Her devotion to
ECC Compton Center students and fellow
faculty members is reﬂected in the depth of
her involvement, including programs such
as New Student Welcome Day, Transfer
Center, Athletic Counseling, Student Success, EOPS/CARE, Student Learning Outcomes, and the Commencement Committee.
Haynes earned both a master’s degree in
education counseling and student personnel
and a bachelor’s degree in social science
from San Jose State University.
Dustin Black, recipient of the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty award, is an exemplary
member of the History Department. He is
recognized as an instructor who “is focused
on student success and getting the best out
of his students.” Black was instrumental in
establishing a new chapter of the student
honors society Alpha Gama Sigma (Tau
chapter) at ECC Compton Center. The Alpha
Gama Sigma honors society helps students
deﬁne and reach their goals by providing the
information and focus needed for success.
He serves as an advisor for Alpha Gamma
Sigma on his own time, is a mentor for the
First Year Experience program, and consistently seeks ways to help students excel.
Black earned a master’s degree in history
from California State University, Los Angeles and a bachelor’s degree in history from
California State University, Long Beach.
Alice Hawkins, recipient of the Distinguished Staff award, is a valued member of
the Maintenance and Operations Department. She is recognized for being professional at all times, and contributing beyond
her day-to-day responsibilities. When assigned to the Athletic Department, Hawkins
coordinated the awards banquet, arranging
all details of the event including food, decor
and the student-athlete awards. As a member of Homeland Security with the United
States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Hawkins has
earned the rank of Flotilla Commander.
She is currently studying to earn a master’s
degree in counseling psychology at National
University and earned a bachelor’s degree
in psychology from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Fighting Cancer Raise Funds and Awareness
for Local Cancer Treatment Centers
Annual Believe Walk will bring more
than 10,000 walkers to downtown Redlands
on Sunday, October 6th! SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA – On Sunday, October
6th, 2013, the 6th Annual Believe Walk
will kick off at Orange and State Streets
in downtown Redlands, California. Walk
participants and volunteers are encouraged
to register online at www.BelieveIE.com.
Individual Registration is $35, 4-12 years
old is $10 and 3 and under is free, and there
is an additional $15 late registration fee after
September 30th. Walkers have the opportunity to do either a 5K or 10K route, and pets
are also encouraged to attend.
“This small town event has evolved
into a community celebration,” said Jack
H. Brown, Chairman and CEO of Stater
Bros. Supermarkets. “Everyone is affected
by cancer at some point in their lives, and
it’s amazing to see how our community, the
Inland Empire, has stepped up to the plate
to do something about it.”
In just ﬁve years, the Believe Walk has
donated over $1.7 million to local cancer
ﬁghting organizations. Past recipients include the recently unveiled Patient Resource
Center at Loma Linda University Cancer
Center, St. Bernardine Medical Center in
San Bernardino, Redlands Community
Hospital, and Michelle’s Place in Temecula
Valley.
“The level of community support for
the Believe Walk has been amazing,” said
Nancy Varner, Co-Founder of the Inland
Women Fighting Cancer Committee. “It’s so
exciting to see how all aspects of the community have come together for one cause,
to ﬁght cancer.”
At the end of the Walk, participants will
celebrate at the Believe Bash located at the
Redlands Bowl. More than 50 vendors will
be at the Bash with lots of food and free
items for the participants.

Education Month in Paramount once again recognized, among others, the top-performing teachers and students in our school district, and a special note of thanks go out
to everyone in the City and Paramount Uniﬁed who made the celebration such a positive

PEP is looking for volunteers who are willing to put in 2-12 hours a week as homework
tutors for elementary school children at the Paramount Petroleum Learning Center at Spane
Park. Homework Help is offered Monday through Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Training is provided and a background
check is required.

Paramount Recognizes Community Members
The Paramount City Council recognized some special members of the community at its September
3rd meeting, including educators and students in celebration of the City’s annual Education Month.
The City Council commended Los Angeles County Sheriff’s
Department deputies Welby Cham and Hector Vazquez, and
Bianchi Theater security guard and EMT Ahyson Padilla, for
helping to save the life of a theater patron who had suffered

10 Tips for Making Your Website Mobile-Friendly
More than half of American adults own
smartphones and one-third own tablets, according to the Pew Internet and American
Life Project—and more and more of these
consumers are using their devices to go
online. A mobile-friendly website can boost
your business’s sales: According to Google,
67 percent of consumers are more likely
to buy from a business if it has a mobilefriendly website. Ready to “mobilize” your
website? Follow these 10 tips.
1. Test your site. There are a variety
of tools you can use to see how your site
looks on a range of different mobile devices,
from Android phones to iPads. MobilePhoneEmulator, mobiReady and Screenﬂy
are a few to try.
2. Begin with the basics. Smartphone
users are typically looking for directions,
hours and contact information. Put that
information at the top of your website’s
home page, where it’s easy to ﬁnd, along
with a link to your address on Google Maps.
Include a “click to call” button on every page
of your website so customers on the go can
contact you easily.
3. Limit images. Too many images, or
images that are too large, will take a long
time to load on a mobile device, frustrating
prospective customers. It’s OK to use images, but use smaller sizes and compress the
images so they’ll load quickly on a mobile
connection.
4. Design for touchscreens. Clicking on
a tiny smartphone screen is harder than using
a computer mouse. Avoid user frustration by
making sure that buttons and links are big
enough to click on easily, and putting plenty
of white space around them so users don’t
accidentally hit the wrong link.
5. Limit the amount of text users must
enter. Filling out lengthy forms on a smartphone or tablet is tiring. Wherever possible,
use dropdown menus or a list of choices so
users can tap a selection rather than type in
information.
6. Cut down on content. When they’re
squinting at a small device, your customers
don’t want to read a lot of words. Streamline
your content so they can get the key points
of your message quickly.
7. Simplify site navigation. If your
standard website has a lot of menu options
or tabs, consolidate them into a shorter list
of navigation options for your mobile site.
Focus on the choices mobile users are most
likely to care about—for instance, they
don’t need to see your restaurant’s “About
Us” page, but they do want to see your
“Menus.”
8. Make email messages mobile-friendly. In a Constant Contact study, 80 percent
of smartphone owners say it’s extremely important that emails be readable on a mobile
device, and 75 percent say they are “highly
likely” to delete an email if they can’t easily
read it on their smartphone. Consider using
an email marketing provider like Constant
Contact, which has templates already formatted for mobile devices. Constant Contact
even offers free workshops on developing
mobile-friendly emails, or visit your local
SBDC for help.
9. Think mobile when being social. Four
in 10 social media users regularly access
social media from their mobile phones, the
Pew Internet and American Life Project
reports. Keep posts short so customers can
quickly enjoy them on mobile devices. For

Hola querido público estamos aquí
de nuevo saludándolos cordialmente, y
de ante mano agradeciendo su atención
y cooperación para mejorar a nuestras familias y por ende a nuestra comunidad.
Recordemos que estamos en el plan de
acción de seis pasos. En la edición anterior
hablamos del paso #2 que se trató de establecer reglas y límites para obtener resultados positivos en la relación con nuestros
hijos. Hablamos sobre cómo ganarnos el
respeto de nuestros hijos primeramente,
y como ser un verdadero ejemplo para
merecer ser escuchados y respetados.
Esa es la mejor manera de obtener los
resultados que buscamos, predicar con el
ejemplo. Ahora entremos al
PASO #3 SUPERVISION ACTIVA.
La supervisión activa se puede describir con cinco expresiones simples:
1. Con quien?
2. Que?
3. A donde?
4. Cuando?
5. Por que?
Hagamos que a nuestros hijos les resulte imposible consumir drogas o alcohol,
pero como hacemos eso?
Supervisando de cerca sus actividades,
revisando y veriﬁcando todo lo que hacen,
con tanta frecuencia como sea necesario.
Pongamos mucha atención a donde van,
con quien se juntan, quienes son sus
amigos más cercanos y a que se dedican
también.
Usted puede visitar repentinamente
las ﬁestas y reuniones que asisten, así,
sin avisar, observando todo con cautela
para asegurarse que no haya consumo de
alcohol o alguna droga.
A los chicos no les gusta ser vigilados
y sentirán vergüenza ante sus amigos por
la aparición repentina de sus padres, pero
usted no se intimide ni sienta temor, recuerde que lo más importante es la seguridad
de nuestros hijos, ellos se disgustaran por
ahora, pero después cuando lo mediten
hasta ellos mismo se lo agradecerán.
Atención en esto, guarde su postura,
no lo avergüence, no lo trate mal, no lo
amenace, porque eso puede ser contraproducente. Pues no se trata de maltrato, ni
abuso en la educación de nuestros hijos.
El trato debe de ser con amor, respeto,
paciencia y ﬁrmeza.
Ahora, también en nuestra casa,
debemos hacer supervisiones rutinarias
en la recamara de nuestros hijos/as para
asegurarnos que no escondan drogas,
alcohol o alguna cosa dañina. No tenga
temor de “invadir su privacidad” es de
suma importancia hacer estas cosas, ya
que muchas veces ellos hacen cosas bajo
presión de sus amigos. Su hijo puede que
sea un buen muchacho/a un buen estudiante, buen hijo, por lo mismo debemos
cuidar bien quienes son sus amigos, pues
ellos inﬂuyen muchísimo en la conducta
y en la vida de ellos.
Por eso:
Con quién? Con quien está mi hijo?
Debemos conocer los números de teléfono, las direcciones y aun a los padres
de los amigos de nuestros hijos.
Qué? Que va a hacer mi hijo? Va a ir
a un baile, a un espectáculo, a una reunión,
ﬁesta o show?
A dónde? A donde va a estar mi hijo?
Cuál es la dirección, que tipo de lugares,
y en donde está ubicado?
Cuando? Cuando regresara a la casa?
Que horario le pusimos para regresar?
Cumplirá en lo que quedamos?
Por qué? Por qué vamos a permitir que
nuestro hijo vaya a esa ﬁesta? Debemos
de considerar dos aspectos: Como ha sido
su conducta y responsabilidad durante la
semana en la casa y en la escuela y también
que tipo de reunión o ﬁesta quiere asistir.
La supervisión activa debe de ser
constante y ﬁrme, pero nunca olvidemos
que NO se debe de usar la agresión física,
verbal o mental.
Recordemos siempre que el AMOR
debe de ir adelante, en primer lugar toda
la vida.
