about themselves and their companies or organizations. Following the introductions each table
was asked to test their chamber
knowledge by playing Chamber
Trivia. Those lucky enough to

month on CBS Channel 2’s special news program “California
Dreams.” It was a wonderful
segment showing off what the
City has to offer, and it made
this hometown girl feel awfully
proud.
I’m pleased to report, also,
that U.S. Mayor, the national publication of the U.S. Conference of
Mayors, ran an extensive article
on the GRIP program in its “Best
Practices” department that was
published in conjunction with
the anti-gang conference held in
Washington, D.C. that I spoke at
in April. Closer to home, Tony
Ostos, the City’s GRIP Manager,
took part in a roundtable discussion on “Talk of the City”
on KPCC 83.9 FM that was part
of the larger anti-gang telethon
produced by Long Beach cable
television. Many people are
interested in GRIP, as it is one
of the few long standing gang

Paramount is sharing the services of a print expert with some
neighboring cities to speed up
the handling of property crimes.
Prints lifted at crime scenes now
go to the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station,
which means they are read in
three-to-ten days instead of nineto-12 months it used to take.
Here is a good example of
how the new system is working.
After a recent residential burglary,
our specially trained CSO took
the prints directly to Cerritos. A
suspect was identiﬁed right away,
and after further investigation the
suspect was arrested and found
with jewelry and watches linked
to other burglaries.

Fireworks Reminder
The Fourth of July holiday,
with its many celebrations, is
near. So here is a review of the
City’s ordinance governing safe
and sane ﬁreworks sold in Paramount. Please remember, too, that
all other types of ﬁreworks are
illegal, and anyone caught selling or setting them off could be
charged with a serious crime.
Fireworks can only be used on
July 3 and July 4. Also, you must
be 16 years or older to purchase
the items.

Banners for Businesses
- Marketing Tool Allowed
by Special Ordinance
As a tool to help with advertising, the City of Paramount
enacted a special ordinance in
1993 that allows businesses to
use hanging banners at their
location.
Each business is permitted
one banner, except for businesses located in corner suites,
which are allowed two banners,
and businesses occupying single-unit buildings are allowed
four banners. One banner is
permitted per building side. All
banners must be professionally
manufactured, and they need to
be installed ﬂat against the wall
or facade and anchored at all
four corners - they can’t hang in
midair, suspended only by the
top edge, or be strung between
buildings or trees. Businesses
need to get a no-fee permit, and
renew it on a yearly basis. (It’s
a simple, one-page form.)
This type of marketing can
be a great beneﬁt. There can,
though, be a downside - if we’re
not diligent about maintaining
our banners, they can become
worn out and create a bad visual
image of our town. Paramount
and its businesses have put in a
lot of effort and energy over the
years to enhance our physical
environment. And we’ve been
very successful. But a tattered,
unattended banner can compromise a hard-won victory over
pockets of blight.
The banner ordinance in
Paramount is meant to provide a beneﬁcial and effective
advertising tool for local merchants. If these signs become
damaged or hang badly, it’s
in everyone’s best interest to
set them straight and make
repairs. If you use banners,
please help by keeping them

Closer look
Kimberly’s Dance Studio Brings the
Terpsichorean Arts to Paramount
Dancing - tap, jazz, ballet,
hip hop, lyrical - has come to
rival sports as a major extracurricular activity for children
and teenagers. For the past
year, Paramount has had its
own special place for kids to
learn and practice the art form,
Kimberly’s Dance Studio.
In a sense, Kimberly really had no choice but to start
the business. A graduate of
Paramount High School, Class of
2002, she was well on her way
to a career as a dental assistant,
had gained her certiﬁcate from
Cerritos College and was working in her chosen ﬁeld.
But dance had always been
her passion, starting at three
years old with a tap and ballet
class given though the city’s
Recreation Department. Over
the years, her reputation as
a dancer and choreographer
developed to the point where
friends and neighbors were
asking if she would teach their
children. “I thought I’d give it
a try, just free little lessons,”
she said. “I began with two kids
working out of my home. Then
it was four kids, and then eight.
Word got out and people started
coming out of the woodwork until
it got too big for the house.”
When the waiting list hit 65,
Kimberly knew it was time to look
for a real studio space, which
she found in the building at
Paramount Blvd. and Jackson St.,
transforming a former ofﬁce into
a two-stage facility. Now, as the
studio’s anniversary approaches,
and there are almost 200 students taking classes, Kimberly
is searching for a larger location
within the city.
The studio offers classes for
girls and boys ages 3-18. There
are ﬁve teachers, including Kimberly. In addition to the dances
listed above, classes are offered
in stretch and turns and cheer
prep for high school. Performing groups are also created with
the more experienced dancers,
who then go to places such as
Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags
Magic Mountain, Disneyland and
school, church and community
events like the city’s Easter Faire
Kimberly Gonzales
to put on shows for the public.
“Everyone starts in beginners,
and if they’re improving and
capable of performing live, and
committed and their families can
get them to the shows, we decide
if they will get into a performing
group,” Kimberly explained.
This summer will see the studio’s second annual recital for
all students to be held at the
William Bristol Auditorium in
Bellﬂower.
It’s a very busy time for
an industrious young lady
- besides running the studio,
Kimberly teaches a Show Choir
class with singing and dancing at Paramount High and is
head song leader at Cerritos
College, where she is working
on degrees in business and
dance. While the world of
dentistry may have suffered a
loss, it’s a big gain for the kids
and parents of Paramount. “I
think it’s great for kids to have
fun with dance,” she said. “It’s
a positive thing. I recommend
the experience for parents,
too. A lot of people appreciate
having their girls and boys in
dance. It’s awesome.”

Have a good time while helping a great cause. On Friday, June
17, at 6:00 p.m., the Paramount
Education Partnership (PEP) will
hold its second annual wine-tasting fundraiser. Taking place at
Progress Park Plaza, the event will
feature a silent and a live auction,
with all proceeds going to PEP’s
programs and scholarships.
The cost of a ticket ($25 per
person, pre-sale, $30 per person
at the door) will buy wine, hors
d’oeurves and live entertainment
for the evening. Among the many
objects on the auction block will
be a Santa Barbara wine-tasting
tour (shades of Sideways), a stay
at a four-star hotel and spa, and
a helicopter trip over Catalina
Island.

environment if disposed of
improperly. Materials such as
used motor oil, paint, turpentine, acid or lye-based cleaners,
household and car batteries,
pesticides and garden herbicides can damage the environment if tossed in the trash or
poured down a sink or storm
drain.
Household E-Waste is consumer electronic equipment
near the end of its useful life
such as computer monitors
and televisions which cannot
be disposed of in trash cans.
Unfortunately, electronic waste
is a growing problem although
many of these products can
be reused, refurbished, or recycled, including items such
as VCRs, stereos, fax machines,
copiers, computer keyboards
and cellular telephones.
Collect those unwanted
household hazardous waste and
e-waste items and bring them to
a free Roundup. We’ll recycle
what we can and properly dispose of the rest. It’s easy to participate. Leave the products in
their original container, place
them in a cardboard box and
drive to the Roundup site. The
entire process only takes a few
minutes and you never have
to leave your car. No explosive
or radioactive materials, tires
or waste from business will be
accepted. Please do not mix
products together.

Summer Means Fun at
the Los Cerritos YMCA
The Los Cerritos YMCA offers
a terriﬁc Summer Day Camp Program. The program is designed
speciﬁcally for children 41/2 — 12
year olds. Campers are separated
according to grade levels, and
placed into camps with children
of their same grade level.
Pioneer camp is designed for
the youngest camper — beginning
Kindergarten and First Grade.
Camp activities include academic
and group building experiences,
field trips, and more. Explorer
camp is for Second, Third and
some Fourth Graders; and Adven-
ture camp is for Fourth, Fifth and
Sixth Grade children. Both of these
camps are non- stop fun! Days are
ﬁlled with arts and crafts, character building, trips to museums,
amusement parks, beaches, pools
and much, much more!
Rallies are held every morning and awards are given to campers who demonstrate positive
character values.

elderly curmudgeon, a purple
creature known as a “Woozle”
and a self-effacing jalapeno,
among other lovable characters,
Jeff Dunham is straight man to
some of the funniest partners in
show business. His comedic skill
and impeccable technique serve
as sleigh of hand; however, drawing attention away from the fact
that Dunham is a ventriloquist
extraordinaire. “What makes this
performer the best at what he
does is the believability factor,”
our reviewer wrote. “Dunham’s
characters have more personality than a lot of people I know.”
1998 Comedian of the year, Dunham has had numerous appearances on the “Tonight Show” with
Johnny Carson and with Jay Leno,
more recently, he appeared on
the T.V. Show “Blue Collar”. His
characters are so vivid; Dunham
usually opens with ten minutes of
solo stand-up simply to establish
himself as the hub of the wheel.
“If they walk away thinking, Gee,
those were some funny guys,
rather than Boy, wasn’t he a good
ventriloquist, then I’ve done my
job,” says Dunham.

Cerritos YMCA Summer Camping
