WORKSHOP OUTLINE
DAY ONE, SAT MAY 30, 1.30-4pm
Artists will draw a local plein air landscape. (A wet
weather alternative would commence in the studio.)
Dr. Christine Kirkegard, Artist Statement
Drawing and painting the landscape from direct observation,
from memory and reflection in the studio are equally vital
aspects of my practice. While the descriptive topographical
elements of an environment are important, more absorbing
is the abstract essence of subject or place. How selective
orchestration of line, value, shape, and colour may suggest
both universal and particular qualities of atmosphere, light,
flux, form, and space.

WORKSHOP APPROACH
The workshop will explore important drawing principles in
landscape representation. In particular I will reference
artists from pictorial traditions Eastern and European, ancient and modern who have sought to come to terms with
nature’s moving order and uncertainty. eg. Rembrandt,
Turner, Monet, Vuillard, and Ancient Chinese landscape
painting. The combination of graphic and painting media will
allow for both structural considerations and fluidity in some
liberation of hand as participating artists work firstly plein
air and then imaginatively transform their drawings through
studio experimentation.
All great pictorial compositions are distinguished by variation of mark within ordered structures. Thus the workshop
aims to explore vigour in graphic and painterly variation
within a unified approach to composition. Ways of determining the shape, line and value character of particular
natural forms and their connective relationships within the
landscape genre will be explored. eg. from sky, tree canopy
and trunk to ground plane, from rock formation and embankment to flowing water.
The workshop begins with a demonstration of selected
in situ drawing techniques using both dry and wet media
- drawing with the pencil, brush and pen in a monochromatic response with limited colour extension.
Day One preferred media, suitable for the time constraints are:
WATER SOLUBLE GRAPHITE OR GRAPHITE, PEN, BRUSH
& INK, WATERCOLOUR OR AQUARELLE, A3 WATER COLOUR PAPER 300GSM.

DAY TWO, SUN MAY 31, 10am-4pm
Artists further develop plein air drawings in Mixed Media Experiment.

landscape drawing and painting. This will be followed
demonstration of compositional drawing & mixed media
process extending from her plein air drawing. Individual
assistance will be given to participants in their experimentation.

in problem solving.
